GOP senator demands Democrats 'bend over backwards' for Trump

By Oliver Willis - January 4, 2019

A Republican senator who blocked President Obama's Supreme Court nomination now says Congress should do whatever Trump wants.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) is insisting that Democrats “bend over backwards” to fund Trump’s racist border wall to end the government shutdown he engineered.

Alexander made the comments Thursday, from the Senate floor, disingenuously suggesting that giving in to Trump’s extreme and unpopular demands somehow honors the tradition of bipartisan compromise — a tradition Alexander’s party pointedly did away with under President Obama.

“Democrats should recognize now as I did that when an elected president, one elected by the people of the United States, whatever you may think of him, has a legitimate objective, you should bend over backwards to try to meet that objective if you want a result,” the Republican senator said.

Dear Seema Verma, head of the CMS (Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services)

AS a new Congress has been put in place to investigate the shenanigans of your leadership and cronyism, you have been on let's say, a quest to Shred the Social Safety Net ..

You have stated on your twitter account: "This years scariest Halloween costume goes to_ a picture of some one wearing a Medicare for All t-shirt. Then you further commented that "Did I get your attention. Good." Medicare for All isn't a joke. Its a multi trillion dollar drain on the American economy that will bankrupt future generations. It's government controlled health care that will strip choice away from millions. It is a bad idea. And its is scary."

Your alternative Verma is exactly what? You and your corrupt enabling criminal team want people to work for health care if they are on Medicaid, and you and your team is reclassifying disabilities that are so extreme that it calls into question your veracity along with the right wing libertarian backed Koch's and the medical oligarchy, and the governors in this country that are trying to implement your program of servitude to the masses.................you know let them eat cake.

You signed off on a plan in Wisconsin to do this to the people of the state, prior to the mid terms (but now there is new governor in the state and another one by Paul Lepage from Maine is going to Florida to reap the benefits of being a senior asshole grifter off the programs he was trying to stop its citizens from having, you know Medicare, and Social Security and if need be Medicaid.
And that you and them had a criteria that anyone on Medicaid had to prove they needed it, that you and him and others were and are trying to force this extra burden down on human beings, in such places as Arkansas, Kentucky and other right wing fascist libertarian governors are trying to do implement).

And now the question that needs to be asked now, have you studied up for a investigation on your past practices, because you can be rest assured that I am going to call Nita Lowey Chairwoman Committee of Appropriations and Rosa DeLauro, Chairwoman of the sub-committee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies to bring you and others before congress to explain your actions and who you are beholden too..............

And Seema Verma, if you want to get up to speed there is past article in Mother Jones from the Jan/ Feb edition, that pretty much says it all about you and your policy..............so brush up..................I can't wait for the hearings...............because I want to know about Maximus profits...................I hope you have a really bad day.................

New Rep. Tells Cheering Crowd: 'We're Going To Impeach The Motherf*cker'

By Kate Riga
January 4, 2019 9:20 am

Hours after being sworn in as a new congresswoman on Thursday, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) dropped a bomb on an issue around which most Democrats have been walking on eggshells.

“‘Look, Mama, you won. Bullies don’t win,’” Tlaib quoted her son to the crowd at a MoveOn reception. “And I said, ‘Baby, they don’t.’ Because we’re gonna go in there and impeach the motherfucker.”

The crowd erupted.

President Donald Trump apparently saw Tlaib’s speech and reacted with bewilderment Friday morning.

Zinke Likens His Environmental Rollbacks To Teddy Roosevelt's Legacy

By MATTHEW BROWN
January 4, 2019 9:41 am

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — As former U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke exits Washington amid a cloud of unresolved investigations and criticism of his actions favoring industry, he told The Associated Press that he has lived up to the conservation ideals of Teddy Roosevelt and insisted that the myriad allegations against him will be proven untrue.

The former Montana congressman also said he quit President Donald Trump’s cabinet on his own terms, despite indications he was pressured by the White House to resign effective Wednesday.

During almost two years overseeing an agency responsible for managing 500 million acres of public lands, Zinke’s broad rollbacks of restrictions on oil and gas drilling were cheered by industry. But they brought a scathing backlash from environmental groups and Democratic lawmakers who accused him of putting corporate profits ahead of preservation.

In his first interview since Trump announced his resignation last month, Zinke said the changes he made at Interior meshed with Roosevelt’s beliefs and were needed to unfetter energy companies held back by unreasonable drilling curbs imposed under former President Barack Obama.

With Major Elections Bill, House Dems Get Ball Rolling On Fixing Voting Rights Act

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Tierney Sneed
January 4, 2019 6:00 am

A major legislative package of democracy reforms House Democrats will introduce on Friday is both a notable marker of the emphasis the new majority wants to put on voting rights and the beginning of the process by which Democrats hope to restore the Voting Rights Act, which the Supreme Court gutted in 2013.

According to a summary of the package sent to reporters, the bill — known as “We the People Democracy Reform Act” or HR1 — makes a congressional finding that the 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder led to a wave of voter suppression and instructs Congress to build a record upon the finding.

The House is expected to consider a separate bill that would restore the provision of the Voting Rights Act that the Supreme Court dismantled. That provision required states and localities with a history of racial voter discrimination to get election policy changes pre-approved by the federal government. The bill to address head on the Shelby County decision is moving on its own track, a House Democratic aide told TPM, so the House can build a record of the voter suppression that has happened since the decision came down. Such a public record, legal experts believe, will help protect a VRA fix, if passed, from court challenges conservatives may try to bring against it.

The “We the People” legislation Democratic leaders will be touting at a press conference Friday morning will not include that VRA fix. However, it includes several other provisions expanding the franchise that have been championed by voting rights activists, such as automatic voter registration, same day voter registration, mandated early voting, a requirement that states set up independent redistricting commissions to prevent gerrymander, and a campaign finance overhaul.

Supreme Court considers whether drug companies can poison patients and get away with it

The country is in rough shape.

IAN MILLHISER
JAN 4, 2019, 9:25 AM

Almost two decades ago, a professional guitarist named Diana Levine received an injection of a drug called Phenergan. It was supposed to relieve nausea from a migraine. Instead, it triggered irreversible gangrene.

Levine lost her right forearm and her livelihood. With just one hand, she could no longer play the guitar.

Levine’s lawsuit against the drug’s manufacture, Wyeth v. Levine, triggered a minor panic in the consumer rights community when it reached the Supreme Court a decade ago. The business-friendly Roberts Court seemed likely to absolve Wyeth of liability and leave Levine with nothing.

Instead, the Court broke 6-3 in Levine’s favor, with Justices Anthony Kennedy and Clarence Thomas crossing over to vote with the Court’s liberal bloc.

Ten years later, a similar case involving closely related legal questions is before the Supreme Court in Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp. v. Albrecht, which will be argued on Monday. But the Court itself looks very different. Justices John Paul Stevens, David Souter, and most significantly Kennedy, are all retired — and all of them were in the majority in Levine. Kennedy’s replacement is a hardline conservative likely to join the dissenters from Levine.

https://thinkprogress.org/clarence-thomas-poison-drug-merck-624b1ce0ed43/

-snip-

The question in cases like Merck and Levine is whether someone in her unfortunate position should have to bear this burden alone. Or whether it is fair to ask a company that has profited handsomely off a particular drug to give up some small portion of those profits to ensure that someone injured by that drug should not be left destitute.

As the California Supreme Court explained in a famous and more rudimentary case, in an ideal world, “the costs of injuries resulting from defective products are borne by the manufacturers that put such products on the market rather than by the injured persons who are powerless to protect themselves.”

Justice Thomas, for his part, was not moved by these humanitarian arguments. His separate opinion in Levine was rooted largely in states’ rights. State governments, he reasoned, should not have to set aside their own tort law lightly because of a perceived conflict with federal law.

In Merck, we are likely to discover whether that esoteric objection to an aggressive preemption doctrine will be enough to save the Diane Levines of the future.

I am not going to hold my collective breath with this right wing Federalist Society court of these 5 people being on there, after all there is one justice that it was just fine and dandy that employee should have frozen to death while sitting in the company truck with frozen brakes..................... .....................and he shouldn't even be on the court..................

Failed GOP governor embarrasses himself by attacking Elizabeth Warren as 'out of touch'

On Monday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) announced that she is running for president in 2020, formally throwing her hat into a ring that political observers predict will be crowded. A progressive firebrand who helped design the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and has a sweeping proposal to reform corporate governance laws, Warren is likely to be very influential in policy debates during the Democratic primary regardless of whether she can clinch the nomination.

There is one person, however, who finds the whole idea of Warren’s candidacy a joke: outgoing Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI).

Walker’s criticism of Warren as “out-of-touch” is more than a little rich given that Warren just won re-election by 24 points, whereas Walker lost his bid for a third term to superintendent of public instruction Tony Evers.

If any politician could be characterized as “out-of-touch,” it would be a politician like Walker, who runs on a conservative agenda, loses, and then on his way out the door signs a bunch of lame-duck bills stripping his incoming, liberal successor of several executive powers. Or maybe it’s one of the large number of Republicans, including Walker, who tried and failed to convince their party in the 2016 presidential primary that they were a better choice than Donald Trump. It’s not Warren, a senator who has spent her career advocating for working people over Wall Street, and who helped design a pro-consumer federal agency that 74 percent of voters support.

It is impossible to say who will win the Democratic nomination for president. But at this point, the odds that Warren’s views will drive public policy are far greater than the odds that Walker’s will.
