For Brian Kemp, suit over bad loan reveals political, financial perils

Republican gubernatorial candidate personally backed $10 million for now-struggling agricultural business.
By Alan Judd - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Posted: 12:15 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2018

At 9 a.m. on July 19, Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp sat in his lawyer’s office in Carrollton. In just five days, the state’s Republicans would choose either Kemp or Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle as their candidate for governor. The race was widely viewed as a toss-up. But Kemp would be stuck in Carrollton for the next two hours and 27 minutes, trying to explain, under oath, why he shouldn’t have to repay a $500,000 loan.
By the time his deposition concluded, Kemp had answered “I don’t recall,” “I don’t remember,” “I don’t know,” or some variation at least 91 times.

“To the best of my knowledge,” Kemp replied to one question, “I don’t recall that.”

The deposition, not previously reported, underscored the political and financial perils Kemp faces from a lawsuit over a loan he personally guaranteed for an agricultural business in which he invested.

Seizing On Supreme Court Order, DOJ Tries To Delay Census Citizenship Trial

Source: Talking Points Memo

October 24, 2018 10:53 am

Having secured only a partial victory at the Supreme Court in blocking certain depositions and discovery in the census citizenship question case, the Justice Department is asking a federal judge in Manhattan to delay the start of trial next month, so that the administration can have another go at getting the Supreme Court to intervene.

The request, filed Tuesday evening, asks U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman to put the trial on hold, and to also delay the pretrial proceedings he had scheduled, which include pretrial filings due this week.

It comes after the Supreme Court issued an order Monday night halting plans to depose Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, but denying DOJ requests to put on hold another deposition and as well as additional discovery ordered by the lower court judge.

The Trump administration has argued that the lower court’s finding that Ross acted in “bad faith,” which was used to justify the depositions and discovery, was incorrect.

Anti-Islam Activist Gaffney: Bombs May Be Effort To ‘Deflect Attention’ From ‘Left’s Mobs’

By Allegra Kirkland
October 24, 2018 12:42 pm

A leading anti-Islam activist with close ties to the Trump administration suggested Wednesday that a string of bombs sent to high-profile Democratic figures and newsrooms was an effort “to deflect attention from the Left’s mobs.”

“None of the leftists ostensibly targeted for pipe-bombs were actually at serious risk, since security details would be screening their mail,” Frank Gaffney, executive chairman of the Center for Security Policy, wrote on Twitter. “So let’s determine not only who is responsible for these bombs, but whether they were trying to deflect attention from the Left’s mobs.”

That message comes as law enforcement reports that “functional” explosive devices were sent to philanthropist George Soros, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and the newsrooms at CNN’s New York headquarters and the San Diego Tribune.

Pipe bombs sent through the mail are considered a terrorism-related crime under federal law, regardless of the motive.

Hawaiian island erased by powerful hurricane: 'the loss is a huge blow'

East Island has vanished after coming into contact with Hurricane Walaka, an intense storm that hit Hawaii earlier this month

A piece of the United States has been dramatically wiped off the map after an island in Hawaii was washed away by a powerful hurricane.

East Island, a remote spit of gravel and sand that sat atop a coral reef, has vanished after having this misfortune to come into contact with Hurricane Walaka, an intense storm that surged past Hawaii earlier this month.

Scientists have confirmed the disappearance of the 11-acre island after comparing satellite images of the surrounding French Frigate Shoals, part of an enormous protected marine area in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

“I uttered a swear word. I had a holy cow moment, somewhat in disbelief that it had disappeared,” said Chip Fletcher, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Hawaii. Fletcher and his colleagues were in the process of researching East Island through drone videos and taking samples of sand and corals to ascertain the age of the island and gauge its future prospects in the face of climate change.

“The island was probably one to two thousand years old and we were only there in July, so for it to be lost right now is pretty bad luck,” Fletcher said.

Inside A $50M Trump Project That Failed: Starring Ivanka and Don Jr.

Peter Elkind
October 23, 2018 4:00 am

Reprinted with permission from ProPublica.

In November 2007, The Wall Street Journal infuriated Donald Trump with an article that dissected his recent real estate setbacks. Headlined “Stalled Condo Projects Tarnish Trump’s Name,” the report raised doubt about what the mogul treasured — and banked on — most in business: the value of his personal brand.

Trump responded with a 512-word letter to the editor. Calling the story “one of the most ridiculous I have read in many years,” he complained that it ignored his “tremendous successes with massive projects” and instead focused on “small jobs” in the Florida cities of Tampa and Fort Lauderdale. He dismissed both as licensing deals “for which I am not responsible for development.”

Trump’s reaction offers another capsule of his habit of twisting the truth regarding his real estate deals — one of the patterns revealed in a recent ProPublica and WNYC investigation, “Pump and Trump,” which focused on a deal in Panama. That article concluded that, contrary to the Trumps’ longtime claims that they merely licensed their name, they were deeply involved in their deals.

A trove of until-now unreported emails from inside the Trump Organization, unearthed during a lawsuit against the company filed after the Tampa project collapsed — the building was never constructed — sheds light not only on a U.S. Trump project, but also provides a rare glimpse inside the organization. (The suit, filed by people who had paid deposits in advance to buy condo units, was eventually settled, with the buyers receiving partial refunds of their deposits.) The documents provide copious detail on one of the “small jobs” that Trump would later claim he had merely lent his name to. And they reveal the same patterns of behavior seen in “Pump and Trump.”
