Trump's allies are orchestrating a smear campaign against Jamal Khashoggi to take the heat off Trump for his failure to hold Saudi Arabia accountable.
In a sick new form of victim-blaming, Republicans and right-wing pundits are mounting a smear campaign against murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi in what appears to be a twisted effort to shield Trump from criticism of his poor handling of the scandal.
Citing four anonymous GOP officials, the Washington Post reports that “a cadre of conservative House Republicans allied with Trump has been privately exchanging articles from right-wing outlets that fuel suspicion of Khashoggi,” an apparent first step in a coming character assault.
What started as a behind-the-scenes “whispering campaign” has begun to spill over into the public eye as pro-Trump media figures and platforms — including Rush Limbaugh, Donald Trump Jr., Front Page, Fox News, and several prominent voices on social media — have started to amplify the attacks and conspiracy theories about Khashoggi, who was reportedly murdered and dismembered at the Saudi consulate in Instanbul under orders from the Saudi crown prince.
The smears, which have been amplified by pro-Saudi accounts on Twitter, “are aimed in part at protecting Trump” and supporting his refusal to confront his allies in the Saudi regime about the slain journalist, the Post reports. On Thursday, Twitter removed a network of pro-Saudi automated accounts (“bots”) that were spreading false claims about Khashoggi.

The Department of the Interior has selected Karen Budd-Falen, an anti-public lands advocate, for a senior legal position at the department. The move is controversial: Budd-Falen is an ally of right-wing extremist Cliven Bundy, who is best known for leading an armed 2014 standoff with federal officials in Nevada after he refused to pay his grazing fees.
Budd-Falen is a Wyoming-based property rights attorney who worked as a member of the Trump administration’s transition team for the Interior Department. She is scheduled to begin work on November 1 as the deputy solicitor for Parks and Wildlife working on issues related to endangered species, wildlife refuges, and national monuments.
The attorney had reportedly been previously considered to lead the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). But Budd-Falen withdrew her name from consideration for the top BLM spot in March, claiming the decision was made after she was asked to sell her interest in her family ranch.
Others contend she withdrew because her anti-public lands and anti-federal land management positions raised questions about her ability to pass Senate confirmation.

Insect collapse study 'one of the most disturbing articles I have ever read,' expert warns

A disturbing new study finds that global warming helped drive as much as a 60-fold decline in insect population in Puerto Rico’s tropical rainforest between 1976 and 2013.
“Our results suggest that the effects of climate warming in tropical forests may be even greater than anticipated,” said lead author, biologist Brad Lister, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
And that’s a potentially catastrophic problem given that the forest saw 3.6°F (2°C) warming during that time — yet warming this century is on track to be far greater.
These new findings follow several studies in recent years that found collapsing insect populations around the world.
A 2014 review of scientific literature and data in the journal Science found the number of insects “such as beetles, butterflies, spiders and worms has decreased by 45 percent” since 1980. The reason: “loss of habitat and global climate disruption.”

Fourth-term Republican Rep. Scott Tipton, facing a tough re-election in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, has launched a new broadside against his Democratic opponent Diane Mitsch Bush — falsely accusing her of socialism because she once subscribed to a non-profit magazine that was originally founded by a socialist historian.
Though she is not a socialist, in an attack ad posted on Wednesday, Tipton first warns that the Democratic Socialists of America (an organization with which Mitsch Bush has no affiliation) “openly propose to do away with capitalism” — which is sort of the point of socialism. The narrator then claims that Diane Mitsch Bush “helped fund a leading socialist magazine.” In text on the screen, the ad cites three issues of the award-winning monthly magazine In These Times — a progressive publication that has not identified as an “Independent Socialist Newspaper” since 1989.

Tipton himself landed in hot water in 2011 when it was discovered that he paid thousands of taxpayer dollars from his office operating account to vendors that contracted with his nephew’s company.

Judicial races in North Carolina tend to be low-key affairs. But the crowd gathered at a farmhouse near colonial-era Hillsborough last August — bluegrass on the screen porch, goats in the yard — gave a superstar’s welcome to the Democratic candidate for state Supreme Court.
For years, Anita Earls has been the go-to attorney in North Carolina for beating back assaults on voting rights. She’s had her hands full: Since the 2010 Republican landslide, the state legislature has operated like a perpetual-motion catapult, hurling one measure after another to reengineer the electoral landscape and seeing what sticks in court. Legislators have drawn electoral maps testing the outer limits of gerrymandering. They’ve tried to repeal ballot-access reforms that helped then-candidate Barack Obama carry the state in 2008. They canceled an election, changed how judges are selected, and are now trying to take control of the state’s elections machinery.
Each of these measures is a building block in a larger structure designed to maintain Republican power in the face of a demographic threat. North Carolina is growing more urban and racially diverse, trends that typically favor Democrats. “Building a seawall is not new,” said Justin Levitt, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and former official at the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “But it has been more blatant in North Carolina than it has been in many states.”
The Republicans’ onslaught has produced an outcry audible well beyond the state’s borders. Attacks on voting rights helped fuel North Carolina’s Moral Monday movement, which attracted international attention by repeatedly taking over the Legislative Building in Raleigh starting in 2013, leading to more than 1,000 arrests. The attacks also sparked a pile of lawsuits. Providing much of the courthouse muscle has been the Southern Coalition for Social Justice (SCSJ), a non-profit that Earls founded and until recently directed.
“She’s been the rock star on the legal front when it comes to voting rights here in North Carolina,” said Derick Smith, political action chair of the state NAACP, a key player in the Moral Monday movement. “Almost every facet, she’s been the lead, and we keep winning.”

Kris Kobach Is Desperate To Block The Release Of His Damaging Depo Video

Kansas Secretary of State and GOP gubernatorial nominee Kris Kobach is desperately trying to publicly prevent the release of parts of a deposition tape — played at a trial over one of his voter restrictions — before Election Day.
Kobach is specifically concerned that the video will be used in “last-minute political commercials targeting the Defendant personally,” Kobach said in a court filing Wednesday evening.
“Indeed, the only reason that Plaintiffs are requesting the release of the video is to allow it to be used by partisan organizations and political candidates opposing Secretary Kobach’s gubernatorial campaign,” Kobach said in the filing, which asked the judge — if she ruled in favor of releasing the video — to pause that decision so he could appeal it to a higher court.
The video excerpts were played at the trial last March, where the ACLU and others were challenging his proof-of-citizenship voter registration requirement. U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson ultimately knocked down the requirement — a decision that’s currently on appeal.

Big Loopholes In Florida Governor's 'Blind Trust'

As reporters have uncovered a steady stream of ethically questionable investment holdings by Florida governor and GOP Senate candidate Rick Scott that appear to have been affected by decisions made by the state government, he has stuck to a singular refrain: there is no conflict of interest because his investments are in a “blind trust.”
The New York Times, however, points out that Scott’s “blind trust” is in fact full of loopholes that would, if he wanted, have allowed him to be aware of his holdings:
"To shield himself from future conflict charges, Mr. Scott, who is now running to unseat the incumbent senator Bill Nelson, created a $73.8 million investment account that he called a blind trust. But an examination of Mr. Scott’s finances shows that his trust has been blind in name only. There have been numerous ways for him to have knowledge about his holdings: Among other things, he transferred many assets to his wife and neither “blinded” nor disclosed them. And their investments have included corporations, partnerships and funds that stood to benefit from his administration’s actions.
Only in late July, when compelled by ethics rules for Senate candidates, did Mr. Scott disclose his wife’s holdings. That report revealed that his wife, Ann Scott, an interior decorator by trade, controlled accounts that might exceed the value of her husband’s. Their equity investments largely mirrored each other, meaning that Mr. Scott could, if he wanted, track his own holdings by following his wife’s."
Among the suspect assets owned by Scott and his wife include $3 million in a credit fund for an investment group that owns All Aboard Florida, a private rail company that Scott supported as governor while rejecting a federal high-speed rail project along the same corridor. He also has holdings in Gilead Sciences, a pharmaceutical manufacturer that overcharged Florida Medicaid for drugs to treat hepatitis C, although state health officials deny that they or Scott had any role in forcing doctors to prescribe Gilead’s products to beneficiaries.

Obamacare's never been more popular -- and GOP still plans to kill it

Health care is the most important issue for voters this year, but the GOP is threatening to gut it anyway.
Public support for Obamacare has never been higher, according to a new Fox News poll. The outpouring of good will for the landmark Democratic legislation comes as Republicans scramble with with how to deal with the calculus as midterm elections approach.
Incredibly, in the Senate, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is openly discussing trying again to repeal the affordable healthcare act in 2019.
Lamenting that the GOP’s failure to take away protection from millions of Americans is a great “disappointment,” McConnell says Republicans are “not satisfied with the way Obamacare is working.”
He vows to forge ahead to undo Obamacare, despite the fact 54 percent of Americans now support the legislation. That’s up nearly 20 points in just the last three years, according to the Fox News survey.

GOP dark money group pretends to be Democrats to attack Andrew Gillum

A Republican dark money group has been misleading voters and using Facebook to smear Florida gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum.
A Republican dark money operation is masquerading as a group of Democrats and is trying to smear Andrew Gillum, the Democratic nominee for governor in Florida.
“Florida Strong” is the PAC in question, fueled with thousands of dollars from a team of right-wing donors.
Money has come in to the political committee from the Florida Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee, a group called “Sunshine State Conservatives,” and other PACs like the Responsible Leadership Committee and a PAC supporting Trump called the Freedom First Committee. Florida Strong also received $100,000 from former GOP state senator and conservative real estate developer Patrick K. Neal.
The name of the group is a exactly the same as a previously existing advocacy group, also called Florida Strong, that backed Democratic candidates in the past.
