Sen. Schatz leaves Trumps climate-denying NASA nominee sputtering nonsense

A Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday morning exposed just how unfit former Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-OK) is to run NASA, one of the country’s leading scientific agencies.
At a hearing in front of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, Trump’s controversial climate science-denying nominee revealed that he doesn’t even know the science he denies.
Unlike previous NASA chiefs, Bridenstine is a politician without any scientific credentials, and for that reason alone his nomination had already been blasted by senators on both sides of the aisle. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) told Politico, “I just think [his nomination] could be devastating for the space program.”
And on Wednesday, Rubio’s Democratic counterpart, Sen. Nelson (FL), gave a 10-minute opening statement on just how bad Bridenstine could be for NASA.

A reporter for Shareblue, a liberal website, was violently arrested and pinned to the ground by five police officers while covering the Virginia gubernatorial race on Saturday. The incident was captured on video. Mike Stark, who has critically covered Republican candidate Ed Gillespie's campaign, was at a parade in Annandale, Virginia filming Gillespie's campaign vehicle. According to Shareblue, a police officer approached Stark to tell him to move back.
A Fairfax County Mason District police officer demanded that Stark cease filming the vehicle and move back farther than the 20-yard distance already separating him from the vehicle. He was accompanied by a woman who had raised an objection to Stark's presence at a Gillespie campaign event just the evening prior.
After a brief back and forth, during which the police officer made clear that Stark would not be able to ask the gubernatorial candidate any questions at the public campaign event, Stark responded "f— this." At that point, the officer moved to handcuff Stark.

A reporter covering Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie’s appearance at a town parade Saturday was violently arrested by a half-dozen police after a woman reportedly associated with the Gillespie campaign spoke to the officers.
Mike Stark, who covers Gillespie’s race for the site ShareBlue, was attempting to film Gillespie as he drove past during the annual Annandale Parade when he got into conflict with Fairfax County law enforcement over whether where he was standing counted as sidewalk or roadway.
Video of the encounter and arrest show a woman in red approach the officers and speak with them just prior to Stark’s arrest. ShareBlue reports the woman “had raised an objection to Stark’s presence at a Gillespie campaign event just the evening prior.” Gillespie campaign spokespeople did not respond to multiple requests for information on the woman’s connection to the campaign, instead directing all questions to police. Stark had hoped to ask Gillespie some questions during a public appearance, according to his employer.

A lot has changed since the first national census was conducted back in 1790, during the first term of the United States’ first president, George Washington, when the country’s population numbered around 3.9 million. But the need for the decennial census has not.
Conducted in every year ending in zero, the census serves several important purposes. It ensures that citizens are granted the correct number of representatives at the state, local, and federal level, and allows lawmakers and researchers to fairly lobby for them in Washington. It also reflects the overall, diverse makeup of the U.S. population and gives analysts the data they need to accurately prioritize people’s needs.
But the Census Bureau has found itself in increasingly dire straits in recent years, leaving the future of the decennial survey in question — which could spell disaster for communities that rely on the census for important representation.
As ThinkProgress’ Elham Khatami previously reported, a Sunlight Foundation survey published on October 23 found that 74 percent of city officials nationwide trust and rely on the results of each decennial survey to adequately serve their citizens. Specifically, they said, the information was “important” or “very important” for planning, development, innovation, and analytics purposes.

Pat Robertson, the 700 Club host who once suggested gay men living with HIV try to infect others through handshakes, went on a rambling monologue in defense of President Donald Trump that suggested he shut down investigations into the Russia scandal and dismiss special prosecutor Bob Mueller.
“He [Trump] can grant a pardon to everybody involved in this thing if he wants to,” Robertson said. “He has every right to shut Mueller down and say, ‘You have gone as far as you need to and I have instructed my Justice Department to close you down.’”
Robertson doesn’t seem interested at all in whether crimes were committed. His only concern is the preservation of Trump’s corrupt presidency.
“He can grant a blanket pardon for everybody involved in everything and say, ‘I pardon them all, it’s all over, case closed,’” Robertson said. “He’s got to shut this thing down, he’s just got to.”
