Securing US election systems: Why a paper ballot isnt enough

By R. James Woolsey and Brent Turner on February 14, 2018 1:00 am

At first glance, a citizen or “expert” might be persuaded that the way to provide adequate security surrounding the current U.S. election systems is to make sure the systems utilize paper ballots. This is certainly a good idea, but only one piece of the necessary security conversation.

The fact is these systems run on software and the “bugging” of the software is a major vulnerability, regardless of the paper ballot component. If we are to properly defend against outside (and possibly inside) interference, or “hacking,” the software can not remain private and secret. For national security, the election system software must be what is used by NASA, the Air Force, and the Department of Defense. It must be open source

Top election system solution technologists language in the Secure Elections Act, a bill introduced by Sen. James Lankford, R-OK, and co-sponsored by Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., is deficient in its failure to address the software code issues. Merely calling for a paper ballot will not provide adequate security.

Our new election systems must have open-source software as well as a paper ballot. If the bill does not call for public, open-source software, the systems purchased via the bill will suffer grave threat security vulnerability, allowing outside forces to manipulate our U.S. elections.

The CFPBs Declaration of Dependence

by Jesse Eisinger Feb. 15, 11:20 a.m. EST

In early February, the Federal Reserve delivered its most significant punishment of a major bank in a generation, sanctioning Wells Fargo for its pattern of customer exploitation.

A few blocks away, meanwhile, another of the giant bank’s regulators, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, has recently displayed a different attitude: It has been softening on scandal-inundated Wells Fargo. After an edict about data handling from Mick Mulvaney, the man Donald Trump installed as acting head of the agency late last year, the bureau’s enforcement lawyers suddenly found their hands tied, according to three CFPB staffers. The attorneys weren’t permitted to upload information the bank supplied about its auto insurance business, one of the areas in which Wells Fargo has been accused of malfeasance.

Another probe of bad behavior — this one involving Wells Fargo’s treatment of its checking customers — has bogged down, ProPublica has learned. And a third investigation of the bank (for mortgage abuses) that was about to yield tens of millions of dollars in fines, according to Reuters, now languishes unresolved. Staffers fear they will be ordered to reduce the penalty that Richard Cordray, the previous head of the agency, approved before he left, according to people familiar with the probe.

The CFPB’s multifront retreat comes despite a December tweet from Trump — two weeks after he named Mulvaney to head the agency — in which the president proclaimed that “fines and penalties against Wells Fargo Bank for their bad acts against their customers and others will not be dropped.”

What the criminal enterprise of this "team" currently in this white house and the right wing congress are doing , and what they are now doing to the poor and middle class with this agency is absolutely amazing.

What this asshole Mulvaney is doing, it pisses me off that there are no hearings on what this man is doing, and what the sexual predators team is doing, especially in the article with Sallie Mae now called Navient, and of course the issue with Wells Fargo.

And how a judge that was confirmed by a senate under the leadership of one Mitch McConnell explains everything of what, when and how the political corruption is making this country into a third world estate, when this judge was confirmed

Ban the racist jerks who embarrassed the Blackhawks and Chicago from all future sporting events

David HaughContact Reporter
Chicago Tribune

On Saturday at the United Center, a beautiful night on the ice coincided with ugliness in the stands when four racist jerks embarrassed themselves, the Blackhawks, the sport of hockey and the city of Chicago.

It should be their last Hawks game at the UC. Come to think of it, every one of Chicago’s professional sports teams should ban the offending Neanderthals from walking through their gates. Zero tolerance is the best way to fight intolerance.

In the third period of a 7-1 victory over the Capitals, ushers ejected the so-called fans after they taunted visiting forward Devante Smith-Pelly, who is black, after he was sent to the penalty box for fighting with Hawks defenseman Connor Murphy. The men yelled “basketball, basketball, basketball” at Smith-Pelly, who was visibly upset and reacted by tapping the glass with his stick.

“It's sad that in 2018 we're still talking about the same thing over and over,” Smith-Pelly told reporters Sunday.

Let me first say that I am an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan, I have been for almost 55 years, I have grown-up around hockey and I have played hockey and what happened at this game does not represent the Chicago Blackhawks, my Blackhawks

The following snip is what most people do see or read about...............these are hero's of the sport...................

"Look at Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, whose eloquence and awareness speaking at a candlelight vigil in Parkland, Fla., for the shooting victims at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which Rizzo attended, displayed as much power as anything he has ever done at the plate.

Look at the four Hawks players — Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, Patrick Sharp and Brent Seabrook — who supported the Chicago Police Department by standing in line Friday night in Bridgeport with so many other mourners to pay their respects to fallen Cmdr. Paul Bauer at the officer’s wake."

Dems hit stock buybacks in tax law fight

Democrats are emphasizing companies' stock buybacks to help make their case against the GOP tax law ahead of the midterm elections.

The law is becoming more popular with the public and companies are touting employee bonuses, putting Democrats in a tough spot. That's led them to highlight stock repurchasing announcements, which they say show the law's benefits to wealthy shareholders and corporate executives dwarf any benefits to the middle class.

Republicans counter that stock buybacks also help middle-class Americans with retirement accounts and result in capital being reinvested in the economy.

The issue is quickly taking center stage in the election-year fight over the tax law.

Lawmakers call for withdrawal of Trump proposal that could impact 9/11 responders' health care

Source: The Hill

A bipartisan group of New York lawmakers called on White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney to scrap a proposal in President Trump's proposed budget plan they say could threaten the health treatment of 9/11 first responders.

New York Reps. Peter King (R), Jerry Nadler (D) and Carolyn Maloney (D) said they were "shocked and disturbed" by the proposal, which would see a realignment involving the World Trade Center Health Program.

That program is currently housed in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), which is part of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Trump's 2019 budget proposal for NIOSH would move that agency into the National Institute for Health (NIH).

That move could result in the shifting of employees from NIOSH to the NIH, impacting the 83,000 9/11 first responders who receive treatment and care from the WTC Health program.

Trump: FBI 'spending too much time' on Russia inquiry and missed Florida shooter signals

Donald Trump has criticized the FBI for missing the “many signals” about the Florida school shooter, saying the agency was spending “too much time” trying to prove Russian collusion with the Trump campaign.

The US president’s attempt to use the shooting to make a political point about the FBI’s Russia inquiries into the Trump campaign drew swift criticism, including from John Kasich, the Republican governor of Ohio, who called it an “absurd statement”.

Trump, who the National Rifle Association (NRA) helped elect, made the comments as he faced demands for action on gun control, including from the teenage survivors of America’s latest school massacre.

Thousands of protesters at state rallies this weekend demanded an immediate response from lawmakers in the wake of Wednesday’s attack that left 17 victims dead at a high school in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday.

Our Sociopath Chief

This thing that calls itself 'President' just doesn't know how to act like a human being.

Source: Splinter

With Florida high school students practically begging politicians to do something about the gun violence that threatens their right to a decent education without fearing for their lives, the president of the United States appears to be most concerned about his own image.

And the image Donald Trump chooses to project to the world in the wake of the horrible massacre this week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is one of smiles and a signature thumb’s up.

US tribe fights use of treated sewage to make snow on holy peaks

The Hopi tribe is taking on an Arizona ski resort over its use of artificial snow: ‘People compare it to baptizing a baby with reclaimed water’

To the Hopi tribe, the San Francisco Peaks are sacred. The cluster of mountains rise dramatically from grasslands and ponderosa forests in northern Arizona, and the Hopi say they are home to spiritual beings called kachinas, believed to bring the rain and snow to their reservation.

But the tribe has been allowed to move forward with a lawsuit against a local ski resort over what the tribe deems to be a desecration of the holy mountains: spraying artificial snow made from treated sewage.

“People compare it to baptizing a baby with reclaimed water,” said Ed Kabotie, a Hopi tribal member and artist. “Nobody would think about something like that.”

Signs around the Arizona Snowbowl resort, about 15 miles from Flagstaff, warn skiers not to drink the water used in making snow, but state regulations allow for its use in irrigating crops and watering parks. It has been found to contain trace amounts of substances such as Prozac, deet and ibuprofen. They occur on the order of a few dozen to a few hundred parts per trillion, which, for comparison, is far less than a grain of salt in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
