The Supreme Court's newest attack on voting rights, explained

The Court’s median justice just made it much harder to stop attacks on the right to vote.

On Monday night, the Supreme Court handed down a deeply alarming decision that suggests that the Court’s Republican majority is about to cut away one of the few parts of the Voting Rights Act that it hasn’t already gutted or killed.

The immediate impact of the Court’s 5-4 decision in Merrill v. Milligan is that Alabama’s new congressional maps, which a three-judge panel that includes two Trump appointees determined to be an illegal racial gerrymander, will take effect in the 2022 election. Under those maps, only one of the state’s seven districts — or 14 percent of the US House seats — has a real shot of electing a Black lawmaker. African Americans make up about 27 percent of the state’s population.

The lower court ordered the state to draw at least two districts “in which Black voters ... have an opportunity to elect a representative of their choice.” Thus, had the lower court decision taken effect, it is likely that the racial composition of Alabama’s congressional delegation would closely match that of the state as a whole.

The manatees are starving

Florida’s beloved “sea cows” shouldn’t have to eat lettuce. Yet here we are.

By Benji Jones@BenjiSJones Feb 8, 2022, 12:40pm EST

Down to Earth
The biodiversity crisis, explained

Heads of romaine lettuce might seem like empty calories for starving “sea cows” that weigh 1,000 pounds. But for Florida’s manatees, they’re just what the vet ordered.

In parts of eastern Florida, seagrass — the primary food source for these hulking marine mammals — is disappearing. So for the first time in history, state officials have started feeding manatees huge quantities of leafy greens. A single manatee can crunch its way through about 100 pounds of lettuce in a single day.

Last year, Florida lost a record 1,100 manatees, or more than 12 percent of its total population. And more than 130 manatees have died already in 2022, according to the nonprofit Save the Manatee Club, which is far above average for this time of year. The Florida manatee is a subspecies of the vulnerable West Indian manatee.

Starbucks fires 7 employees involved in union effort after TV interview at Memphis store

Starbucks fired seven employees Tuesday at a Memphis store that’s seeking to unionize — once again fueling tensions between the coffee giant and workers as employees seeking to unionize accuse the company of retaliating against them.

Starbucks spokesman Reggie Borges told The Washington Post that the firings of the workers at the Poplar & Highland store in Memphis were unrelated to the efforts to unionize. The company cited “significant violations” of safety and security policies, including remaining in the store after closing time with non-employees for an interview with local media. The interview with WMC-TV last month was about how the Memphis store is one of several dozen Starbucks locations nationwide to file for union elections in recent months.

Borges noted a photo posted to Twitter showing the employees giving the interview after hours and said the front door was also left unlocked at the store.

Greg Jaffe, Eli Rosenberg and Joanna Slater contributed to this report.

Republicans in Congress are downplaying COVID deaths however they can

By Josh Israel -February 9, 2022 3:03 PM

Republican lawmakers insist that children are dying 'with COVID, not of COVID.'

More than 900,000 people in the United States have died due to COVID-19 since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Congressional Republicans are continuing to argue that COVID-19 is not the main cause of their deaths, minimizing the role it played in many of them and claiming that underlying health conditions are instead to blame.

On Tuesday, Pennsylvania Rep. Guy Reschenthaler argued that a large percentage of the hundreds of American children who have died should not be counted as COVID-19 deaths at all because they already had other medical issues.

"Many of these children had preexisting — I'm sorry, had underlying medical conditions, making them more vulnerable to severe COVID-19 than the average child," he said. "Meaning that many of these children died with COVID, not of COVID. But again, that's real science, not political science."

Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) warned officials in North Carolina that they could face "dangerous" consequences if he is removed from the ballot for his role in inciting a failed insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021.

Cawthorn's opponents have pushed for the congressman to be disqualified by the NC Board of Elections based on an "insurrection" clause that was added to the U.S. Constitution following the Civil War.

"States have long enforced age and residency requirements, without question and with very few if any legal challenges," the Board of Elections wrote in a court filing. "The State has the same authority to police which candidates should or should not be disqualified per Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment."

Hey Cawthorn, I think 146 others of your cell mates should have this thrown at them, also right along with 22 senators....
in fact I think in every state where-by you and your fellow fascist signed that letter to throw out our votes, a citizen should file a lawsuit using the Article and Amendment, then take it to the Federalist Society led John Roberts Supreme Court and watch him and his bunch just completely *(&%#!#*& over the Constitution in real time....maybe they can do a shadow docket ruling and side with traitors ...like you....

Another GOP governor rejects Mitch McConnell's invitation to run for Senate

By Josh Israel -February 8, 2022 5:00 PM
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan recently rebuked his party for endorsing Donald Trump's 'blatant lies' about the 2020 presidential election.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced on Tuesday that he will not run for Senate this year — marking another setback for Senate Republican leaders who want to take back the majority.

"I sincerely appreciate all the people who have been encouraging me to consider it," Hogan told reporters Tuesday afternoon. "Just because you can win a race doesn't mean that's the job you should do if your heart's not in it. And I just didn't see myself being a U.S. senator."

Hogan also quipped that he called incumbent Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) "to let him know that he can rest easy and get a good night's sleep tonight."

GOP wants to let management control 'notoriously left-wing' unions

By Josh Israel -February 8, 2022 12:46 PM

This is what Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) calls 'teamwork.'

Congressional Republicans are proposing a bill they claim would improve "teamwork" between workers and management. In reality, it would allow businesses to bring back the "company unions" used in the 1920s and 1930s to prevent workers from achieving meaningful gains.

Last Thursday, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) introduced the Teamwork for Employees and Managers Act of 2022, a bill "to enable an employer or employees to establish an employee involvement organization to represent the interests of employees." Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) and 12 GOP colleagues filed the same bill in the House.

In a Feb. 3 press release, Rubio and Banks claimed the bill "would provide workers seeking to organize with an alternative to unionization that allows both workers and managers to work together, without fearing heavy-handed legal action or bureaucratic meddling from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)," and noted that it is supported by "conservative labor experts."

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, on Monday, expressed his disapproval over Justice Elena Kagan's sharp criticism of him and his conservative allies.

The conflict arose over the Court's decision Monday to halt a lower court's order requiring Alabama to redraw its congressional maps over claims it disenfranchised black voters. Per Talking Points Memo:

"The conservative majority did not explain its reasoning in Monday’s order. Justice Brett Kavanaugh did write a concurring opinion, attempting to rebut Justice Elena Kagan’s dissent."

Truth kind of hurt doesn't Kavanaugh.....just fucking resign....Federalist Society POS....need a box of Kleenex....
