Reversal of fortune: Obamacare rate hikes pose headache for Republicans

Unlike recent campaign cycles, when Republicans capitalized on Obamacare sticker shock, they’re now likely to be the ones feeling the wrath of voters.

By PAUL DEMKO 06/24/2018 06:59 AM EDT

Obamacare premiums are once again poised to spike by double digits in 2019, causing heartburn for politicians as voters will head to the polls within days of learning about the looming hit to their pocketbooks.

But unlike recent campaign cycles, when Republicans capitalized on Obamacare sticker shock to help propel them to complete control of Congress and the White House, they’re now likely to be the ones feeling the wrath of voters.

That’s because Republicans are now in total control of the federal government and therefore on the hook for the health care system’s chronic shortcomings. Polling data has consistently suggested that more voters will blame Republicans for future problems with Obamacare. In addition, the GOP’s repeated failures to repeal Obamacare after eight years of campaign promises will make it difficult to galvanize the base on health care.

Democrats and their allies have been hammering President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans for “sabotaging” the health care markets and driving up premiums. Protect Our Care has been running digital ads in 13 states featuring news coverage of big rate hikes and concluding with a sound bite from Trump: “Let Obamacare implode.”

Mulvaney aims to cement CFPB legacy by ensuring successor's confirmation

BY SYLVAN LANE - 06/23/18 06:08 PM EDT

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) acting Director Mick Mulvaney is going to bat for his potential successor, and in doing so he's poised to extend his influence at the watchdog agency.

Mulvaney, who doubles as head of the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), has emerged as a key proponent of Kathy Kraninger, President Trump’s pick to be the CFPB’s full-time director, despite his previous reluctance to influence the selection process.

Trump’s decision to nominate Kraninger, an associate director at the OMB, surprised lawmakers and industry advocates who were expecting the president to go with a bigger-name nominee.

GOP lawmakers preparing to vote on bill allowing migrant children to be detained longer than 20 days

Source: The Hill

BY MARY TYLER MARCH - 06/23/18 10:06 PM EDT

GOP lawmakers are reportedly readying an immigration bill that would allow detained migrant children to stay in detention centers with their parents for more than 20 days, senior White House and Hill officials told ABC News on Saturday.

The bill would undue a decades-old provision that prohibits the federal government from keeping children in immigration detention centers for more than 20 days.

The news comes days after the Justice Department asked a federal district court to modify the rule, known as the Flores settlement, which runs up against President Trump's recent executive order. The order aimed to stop his administration's "zero tolerance" policy that led to the separations of thousands of migrant families who had entered the U.S. illegally.

The policy, announced by the Trump administration in April, seeks to aggressively prosecute immigrants who cross into the U.S. illegally via the southern border. Administration officials initially acknowledged the measure could lead to family separations, a practice which they said could deter future illegal immigration attempts.

This photo of a mother tying her child's shoes, and this same child that was bawling when her mother was being frisked.................and then the people in the GOP, that are going to try and extend the 20 day..................I just have to ask, do any of there kids ask there GOP parents are you that fucking heartless and are your thinking the same thing about me, that you would hate me.

My first impression of seeing this mother do this, showed to me that she loves her child more than the assholes standing around her, and I am struggling to understand how someone can not look at those pictures with any heart is amazing, and not feel that this woman is trying to protect her daughter, because that young daughter knows that the mother that is tying her shoes lace is her best friend and loves her with all of her heart, and is trying to protect her.........................nothing more and nothing less, but to love her daughter and have that compassion under duress.

This just breaks my heart, to see this picture........................

I wish I had the means to start a # tag, whats the little girls name...............because twenty years from now, I think human beings would like too know what she looks like and what she is doing....................

BREAKING: Michigan Gov Signs Revamped Medicaid Work Requirements

By Alice Ollstein | June 22, 2018 3:53 pm

On Friday, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) signed a strict Medicaid work requirement passed by the state’s GOP-controlled legislature. Under the new law, Michigan will join the dozen states who are actively seeking or have already received a waiver from the Trump administration to implement the new rules — which are expected to drop hundreds of thousands of people from the Medicaid rolls.

Michigan’s bill was significantly rewritten after the first version came under fire for having a significant racially disparate impact. Under the original proposal, people living in counties with unemployment rates above 8.5 percent would have been exempt from the work requirement. Those counties were overwhelmingly white, rural, and Republican. Low-income residents of color in Detroit and Flint, where the joblessness and poverty are extremely high, would not have received an exemption, because the wealthier suburbs surrounding those cities pulled the overall county unemployment rate below the threshold.

The blowback to that plan prompted Michigan lawmakers to make revisions, including the elimination of any exemptions for people in places where it is difficult to find a job.

“They can avoid the disparate impact by leveling up or leveling down, and they chose to level down,” Nicholas Bagley, a law professor at the University of Michigan who specializes in health policy, told TPM. “They could have chosen to extend the same solicitude they had for people in rural areas with high unemployment to people in cities with high unemployment, but did not do so. I think it speaks to how punitive this law will be for many people. You’re telling people to find work where there is no work to be had.”

Kirstjen Nielsen Is Our Duke Of The Week

By Kate Riga | June 23, 2018 9:00 am

DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen had a tough week.

She was determined to start it off with a bang, holding a press conference to set the record straight as Americans were inundated with pictures and recordings of distraught children ripped from their parents at the border.

But throughout the press conference, Nielsen lied over and over again, showing an utter lack of compassion for the panicked, isolated babies and their equally panicked parents.

A common theme of her remarks were variations on: “This administration did not create a policy of separating families at the border.” This is a lie, as the practice is the direct result of the administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy for migrants who cross the border without documentation.

She also took a page out of Trump’s playbook and attempted to place the blame on Congress, specifically Democrats. This makes sense because everyone knows that the real power rests with the party shut out of both Congressional majorities and the White House.

Ex-Trump Voter Fraud Commissioner Defends Misleading Reports In Court

By Tierney Sneed | June 22, 2018 4:50 pm

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Former Trump voter fraud commissioner J. Christian Adams was in a federal court in Virginia Friday to defend reports his group released in 2016 and 2017 alleging that thousands of non-citizens were illegally registered to vote and possibly voting in Virginia.

Adams and his group, the Public Interest Legal Foundation, are being sued for defamation and voter intimation by four voters, all citizens, who were named in PILF’s reports that listed alleged non-citizen illegal registrants.

Attorneys for Adams and PILF argued that the reports were not targeting the defendants but rather the government officials who Adams claims are not enforcing voter fraud laws.

The plaintiffs argued that the report amounted to character assassination of those falsely alleged to be non-citizens. If anyone’s character was being assassinated, Adams’ attorney Michael Lockerby argued, it was those of the government officials who hadn’t prosecuted allegations of voter fraud.

The four voters — as well as the Richmond chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens — allege Adams and PILF violated the Voting Rights Act and the Ku Klux Klan Act, as well as Virginia defamation law. Friday’s hearing, in front U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady, was to hear arguments on the defendants’ motion to throw out the lawsuit.

Paul Manafort lawyers want mention of Trump banned in Virginia trial

Attorneys for former Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chair, want a judge to bar any mention of Manafort’s connections to the president at his trial in Virginia.

Manafort’s lawyers filed their motion on Friday in federal court in Alexandria, ahead of the trial in July. Manafort is charged with hiding from the Internal Revenue Service tens of millions of dollars he earned advising pro-Russia politicians in Ukraine.

He faces a separate indictment in Washington. Manafort is jailed while he awaits trial after the judge in the DC case decided to revoke his bail after prosecutors alleged he was engaging in witness tampering.

A pretrial hearing in the Alexandria case is scheduled for 29 June. On Friday, Manafort’s lawyers argued that because their client’s alleged crimes occurred before he ever served on Donald Trump’s campaign, any mention of connections to Trump were irrelevant.
