Op-Ed: Anti-choice politicians adopt dangerous new tactics

When a former reality TV star turned president of the United States is running an administration that resembles a massive dumpster fire, it’s hard to focus on much. When Trump is trying to pass religiously motivated travel bans, attacking judges, insulting our nation’s allies, and more, it can be difficult to remain aware of what else is happening around you — even in your own backyard.

Anti-choice politicians at the state level know this, and while they think we’re not looking, they’re pursuing dangerous new tactics in their assault on reproductive freedom. These days, state politicians don’t just want to defund Planned Parenthood or pass bills that would force the closure of dozens of abortion clinics in their states. Now, they’re implying that it’s okay for bosses and landlords to retaliate against people for their reproductive health care

Ted Cruz Clashes With Health Care Protesters At July 4 Celebration

Source: Talking Points Memo

At a rally and parade in the border town of McAllen, Texas on Independence Day, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) clashed with a group of protesters who booed, heckled, and attempted to question him about his support for a bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act.

According to a reporter with the Texas Tribune, Cruz attempted to work the crowd and shake hands while avoiding the protesters, who held up signs reading “We’re pissed,” “No Medicaid cuts” and “No transfer of wealth 4 our health”—a reference to the massive tax cuts for the wealthy in the Senate GOP’s health care bill. Other protesters held signs attacking Cruz for his positions on immigration and climate change.

Climate change linked to spread of deadly parasite Rat Lungworm in Florida

Scientists have linked climate change to the rise in deadly heat waves and lyme disease-carrying ticks, and now environmental factors may be to blame for one more startling impact: a predicted rise in cases of rat lungworm, a brain-infecting parasite.

Researchers at the University of Florida surveyed 18 counties and found that nearly 23 percent of rats, 16 percent of rat feces sampled, and almost 2 percent of land snails carried the nematode known as rat lungworm. All total, five counties throughout the state were infected. Nematodes are essentially parasites typically carried by animals but can be found in plants, water and soil.

Donald Trump And Neil Gorsuch Have The Religious Right Thinking BigReally Big

Reprinted with permission from Alternet.

The entire Trump presidency has been pretty much a nonstop horror show for progressive Americans, but the month of June made it clear that if you are worried about President Trump and the Republican Congress rolling back advances made during the Obama administration, you aren’t worried nearly enough. Right-wing strategists seeking to undo what they see as federal overreach are looking back as far as the New Deal, and some even further, to the Progressive era at the turn of the 20th Century. With Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court and hundreds of Gorsuch-like judicial nominations in the pipeline, they’re making big plans.

Earlier in the month, the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s “Road to Majority” conference brought Religious Right activists to Washington, D.C. The atmosphere was triumphalist, almost giddy, in sharp contrast to previous years’ complaints about Barack Obama and dire warnings about a potential Hillary Clinton presidency. Religious Right leaders had hitched the movement’s wagon to the Trump train, and they had already begun reaping the rewards.

Candidate Trump had overcome conservative Christians’ qualms about his character with a set of too-good-to-resist promises. He said he’d give them the Supreme Court of their dreams and he pledged to make them more politically powerful by doing away with restrictions on churches’ political activities. He won their trust by making one of their own, Mike Pence, his running mate. Religious Right leaders pulled out all the stops to help Trump rack up a massive margin of victory among white evangelicals.

Kobach faces complaint over Trump's election commission

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)A legal group filed a complaint Monday against Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the vice chair of President Donald Trump's election integrity commission, questioning whether he violated federal law by highlighting his role on the commission in his campaign for Kansas governor in the 2018 election.

The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law called on the Justice Department to investigate whether Kobach violated the Hatch Act, a 1939 law intended to keep federal employees from directly supporting candidates, accusing him of using his role on the presidential commission to promote his campaign and solicit contributions.

In its complaint, the legal group outlined several occasions in which it accused Kobach of improperly promoting his role on the commission to bolster his gubernatorial candidacy through social media accounts attributed to his campaign and through his campaign website, in addition to remarks he has made that the group says blurred the line between federal government worker and political candidate.

The Radical Roots of Americas Songs (And Pledge!) Rebuke Trumps Patriotism

Source: National Memo

“We all salute the same great American flag,” President Donald Trump told an enthusiastic crowd at a rally of evangelical Christians and military veterans at the Kennedy Center last Saturday.

Wearing his flag label pin, Trump appeared on stage decorated with a massive American flag. The audience — many of them decked out in red, white, and blue — waved miniature American flags. As he walked off the stage after his 35-minute speech, the First Baptist Dallas Orchestra played “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

Before Trump addressed the crowd, a choir performed religious hymns along with America the Beautiful.

What everyone should know about Peter W Smith, the potential missing link in the Trump-Russia probe

Source: Think Progress

The Wall Street Journal published two explosive reports detailing the actions of Republican operative Peter W. Smith during last year’s presidential election. According to the WSJ, Smith was seeking to acquire stolen Hillary Clinton emails from Russian hackers. Smith told associates that he discussed his activities with a key member of the Trump campaign, Michael Flynn.

The Trump campaign did not deny the connection, telling the WSJ that “if Mr. Flynn coordinated with him in any way, it would have been in his capacity as a private individual.”

Smith could be the missing link in the Trump-Russia probe that is now being conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The FBI, CIA, NSA and Director of National Intelligence have publicly stated that Russia hacked emails to help Trump win the election. The extent to which the Trump campaign collaborated with Russia in that effort is unknown. (Trump and his advisers have denied involvement.)

GOP Senators Are Trying To Work The Refs As Obamacare Repeal Bill Stalls

Source: Talking Points Memo

A wide gulf continues to separate Republican senators as they furiously negotiate the fate of their health care bill after canceling a vote last week when it became evident it would go down in flames. While GOP senators cannot even agree on the basic questions of health care policy—whether people with pre-existing conditions should be protected from discrimination, whether or not to scrap Obamacare’s taxes on the wealthy, whether Obamacare should be repealed without a replacement ready—they have coalesced around a strategy of working the refs.

GOP senators want the Congressional Budget Office to produce new scores of the bill following the CBO’s brutal assessment that their original version would cause 22 million people to lose their health insurance over 10 years and drastically raise out-of-pocket costs for millions more.

Former CBO Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who helmed the office during the George W. Bush administration, told TPM this request is “extremely unusual, unprecedented probably.”

WE need to keep this paragraph in mind and what the ass**** McConnell and his leadership team are trying to do here:

“The whole point of scoring is to make apples to apples comparisons,” he said. “If you tweak the methodology in the middle of the process of passing a bill, it defeats the purpose of having a scorekeeper.”
