Native Americans seek to rename Yellowstone peak honoring massacre perpetrator

Activists also target valley named for advocate of extermination, amid nationwide fight to reject legacy of racism

Mount Doane is a 10,500ft peak in Yellowstone national park, named for Lt Gustavus C Doane, a US army cavalry captain and explorer. In January 1870, he led a massacre that killed around 175 Blackfeet people, and he continued to brag about the incident throughout his life.

Hayden Valley, a broad valley that holds Yellowstone Lake, was christened for Dr Ferdinand V Hayden, a geologist and surveyor. He also advocated for the extermination of tribal people who refused to comply with federal dictates.

A group of Native Americans say such names can no longer stand. The Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association, an organization of tribal chairmen of 16 Sioux tribes from Nebraska and the Dakotas, is pursuing an application to change Mount Doane to First Peoples Mountain and Hayden Valley to Buffalo Nations Valley.

The proposal echoes moves to take down monuments commemorating Confederate leaders and proponents of slavery. And it mirrors other efforts across the US – and online – to rename landmarks bearing appellations rooted in racism.

And as for "Tim French":

-snip-

At Yellowstone, the name-change request has so far met with resistance. Local county representatives voted against it in early May, and in a motion the county commissioner, Tim French, said a name change was like “trying to change history”. The commissioners’ opposition could prove fatal. “The board on geographic names places a good deal of emphasis on local opinion,” said Lou Yost, its executive secretary.

Novichok poisonings: UK points the finger at Russia

Source: The Guardian

The UK security minister, Ben Wallace, has pointed to Russia as being responsible for the nerve agent poisonings in Wiltshire and called on Moscow to help authorities keep the people of Britain safe by giving information.

An urgent investigation is under way to discover how a British couple were left critically ill by novichok, the same military-grade nerve agent that nearly killed the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, four months ago. The home secretary, Sajid Javid, has been chairing a meeting of the government’s emergency Cobra committee and is to make a statement to the Commons afterwards.

Asked whether Russia could be responsible, Wallace said: “Based on the evidence we had at the time of the Skripal attack, the knowledge they [Russia] had developed novichok, they had explored assassination programmes in the past, they had motive, form and stated policy, we would still assert to a very high assurance that the Russian state was behind the original attack.

“The working assumption would be these are victims of the consequences of the previous attack or something else but not that they were directly targeted. That could change.”

Okay, the next obvious question is what is Britain going to to do, after the formalities have been dispensed, and then what if the sexual predator going to do, since Britain is in essence a NATO ally.......................this is just fucked up, there are not to many governments running around with nerve agents and the composition of the agent points again at the criminal enterprise in Russia, and this country narcissistic malignant asshole is going a to have a one on one.................

Utah drillers struck gold with Pruitt's EPA

Fossil fuel lobbyists helped Republican state lawmakers gain access to the EPA, new documents shows.

E.A. CRUNDEN JUL 3, 2018, 12:26 PM

The appointment of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) head Scott Pruitt brought oil and gas drillers in Utah relief after years of lobbying. Newly released emails show that industry insiders connected Pruitt to Republican Utah lawmakers, seemingly spurring a shift in policy that favored fossil fuel companies over environmental and health concerns in the state.

The president of the energy lobbying firm National Environmental Strategies, Marc Himmelstein, set up a phone call between Pruitt and several Utah lawmakers in July 2017, according to documents obtained by the Sierra Club under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). At the time, smog and pollution plaguing tribal land in Utah’s Uinta Basin was stirring alarm, with the EPA likely to restrict potential drilling for oil and gas in the area.

Utah Republicans pushed back hard on that possibility. Himmelstein, a former executive for the American Petroleum Institute, worked with House Natural Resources Chairman Rob Bishop (R-Utah) and supplied him talking points to use during the phone call with Pruitt, Politico first reported Tuesday. The outlined key areas to address included asking the EPA “to develop a streamlined permitting solution for future development of the Basin,” thereby freeing companies from having to individually gain approval prior to drilling.

“We need your help,” Himmelstein wrote to Pruitt’s chief of staff Ryan Jackson and former White House energy special assistant Mike Catanzaro in June 2017. “The Uinta Basin in Northeast Utah (Rob Bishop’s district) is going to be listed as an ozone non-attainment area later this year. It is a prolific oil and gas producing area that encompasses state, tribal and federal lands.”

According to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, oil and gas development has sparked air and water quality issues, in addition to drilling waste management concerns. But in April 2018, months after the phone call between EPA staff and Utah lawmakers, oil and gas interests in the state got what they had wanted for years: the EPA signed proposed amendments to 2016 federal regulations for natural gas emissions on tribal land.

Wilbur Ross shorted more stocks than previously reported

The Commerce secretary is under fire for five sales, three of which involved a shipping company with alleged ties to the Kremlin.

REBEKAH ENTRALGO JUL 3, 2018, 12:50 PM

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross revealed to CNBC Monday that he shorted two more stocks while in office, in addition to the short sale of three other stocks Forbes previously reported in June.

Ross defended the newly disclosed May 2017 sales — which involved stock belonging to Air Lease and Ocwen Financial Corporation — by echoing his earlier comments about the three other shorts. He excused those sales as part of an effort to divest himself from any financial holdings that could pose a potential conflict of interest.

Monday, Ross told CNBC that in all five sales, his stake in the companies was zeroed out and he received no profit or loss on the trades. “These transactions are not profit-seeking short sales,” Ross said. “These shorts are technical ways of disposing the stocks.”

While Ross claims he was simply doing the right thing by divesting his assets, the action still raises a few red flags.

Richard Painter, former chief White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, said Monday that he had “never heard of someone using short positions to divest.”

“I helped in hundreds of transactions for employees entering government, this is not an acceptable situation,” he said.

Craig Raymond Turner, eldest son of Tina Turner, dies from gunshot wound

Son of superstar singer, who was a real estate agent in Los Angeles, dies in an apparent suicide

Tina Turner’s eldest son, Craig Raymond Turner, has died in an apparent suicide aged 59.

A Los Angeles coroner confirmed to Variety that Turner was found dead at his home in Studio City, California, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His mother hasn’t commented on the news.

Craig was born to Tina Turner – then Anna Mae Bullock – when she was 18 and Raymond Hill, a saxophonist for the Kings of Rhythm, the backing band for Ike Turner. Tina and Raymond’s relationship soon fell apart, and Tina began a relationship with Ike as well as joining his band and later marrying him.

Their relationship was fractious and Tina was subjected to domestic violence, something that Craig witnessed. “Ike’s children never reacted, but my oldest son, Craig, was a very emotional kid,” Turner told Oprah Winfrey in 2005. “He’d always look down in sadness. One day when Ike was fighting me, Craig knocked on the door and said, ‘Mother, are you all right?’”

Florida teachers sue state over anti-union law

The law targets teachers over other professions for changes in union certification.

CASEY QUINLAN JUL 3, 2018, 11:24 AM

Florida teachers are challenging a state union-busting bill that passed in March and officially went into effect on Sunday. On Monday, local teacher organizations, individual teachers, and the Florida Education Association sued the state over the law.

The measure, which was part of an omnibus education bill, HB 7055, says that unions would be decertified if they can’t reach at least 50 percent of the instructional personnel employees eligible for representation. That means they won’t have collective bargaining power to negotiate for things like higher wages and other conditions of employment.

Florida is a right-to-work state, meaning employees aren’t required to pay union dues or be a union member. Lawmakers who voted for this measure likely knew that by requiring 50 percent of teachers to pay dues or have their unions face decertification, they would significantly undermine teachers unions. Employees who “free ride” or benefit from the union services without paying dues are held against the union.

In the lawsuit, which was filed in Leon County Civil Court and names defendants as the Florida Public Employees Relations Commission, teachers say they have been unfairly targeted.

‘We’re not feeling defeated. We’re feeling angry and we’re ready to do something about it. We’re tired of being the target of legislators,” Melissa Rudd, Wakulla teacher organization president, a plaintiff in the lawsuit, told the Tampa Bay Times.

Trump to pick Wyoming park boss to lead National Park Service: report

BY TIMOTHY CAMA - 07/03/18 04:36 PM EDT

Donald Trump is expected to tap David Vela, the superintendent of Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park, to lead the National Park Service (NPS).

Greenwire reported the pick Tuesday, citing several sources familiar with the matter. NPS, the Interior Department and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.

Vela told the news outlet that he is “deeply humbled by the rumors and speculation and, if true, would be honored to serve.”

The Trump administration’s agenda for the NPS has centered largely on strategies for tackling its $11.6 billion maintenance backlog.

Trump supreme court pick: favourites emerge in rush to name nominee

White House staff scramble to vet president’s ‘incredible’ conservative candidates ahead of Monday announcement

Donald Trump has interviewed four candidates to replace Anthony Kennedy, the retiring supreme court justice, and may interview two or more additional potential picks, leaving White House staff members scrambling to complete a vetting process in time for the planned announcement of the president’s pick on Monday 9 July.

The four candidates interviewed so far, first reported by the Above the Law blog, are all federal appeals court judges whose names appear on a list of 25 supreme court prospects published last year by the White House. Some were confirmed by the Senate for their federal posts as recently as last year.

Judges on the list were selected by Trump and the White House counsel Don McGahn on the strength of their conservative credentials, which appear in all cases to include an opposition to abortion rights and skepticism over same-sex marriage and other LGBT rights. The Federalist Society, a national society of conservative lawyers, to the process.

Before his selection last year of Neil Gorsuch to replace the deceased justice Antonin Scalia, Trump interviewed multiple candidates including Thomas M Hardiman, who serves on the third circuit court of appeals alongside Trump’s sister, Maryanne Trump Barry.
