Chris Collins tells his supporters he plans to keep them in the dark about insider trading charges

Bob Brigham 08 AUG 2018 AT 15:04 ET

The congressman taken into custody by the FBI on Wednesday told supporters of his re-election campaign that he “will not address” the charges.

Collins letter to supporters was sent by his congressional campaign shortly after a press conference by FBI Director Christopher Wray. The letter was posted online by New York Times reporter Shane Goldmacher.

“I’m sorry to tell you that I have some very bad news to share,” the letter, on campaign letterhead, began.

“Because my focus is to defeat these charges in Court, after today, I will not address any issues related to Innate Immunotherapeutics,” he claimed.

These 6 Republicans are connected to the insider trading scandal that just exploded on a Trump-lovin

Tana Ganeva 08 AUG 2018 AT 11:27 ET

On Wednesday, Rep. Chris Collins (R-NY) was arrested for insider trading. Collins allegedly shared non-public information about Innate Immunotherapeutics, an Australian drug company developing a drug to treat multiple sclerosis.

When that drug failed a clinical trial in Australia, the company’s stock plummeted. Collins is accused of telling his son about the disappointing results ahead of the public announcement, leading his son, his son’s father-in-law, and others to unload stocks before the drop. They avoided losing $768,000, according to the indictment.

For years, Collins’ relationship to Innate raised concerns in the Capitol.

In 2017, Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), called for an investigation, citing Collins’ cozy relationship with the biotech drug company after its value dropped. The New York Republican held a 16 percent stake in the company.

“Innate plummeted in value by more than 90 percent literally overnight. This follows the company previously suggesting a great response to its drug and touting that it stood to generate as much as $3 billion in profits in this country alone,” Slaughter said in a statement.

Chris Collins, a timeline -- including video of that phone call at the White House picnic

Source: CBS

Rep. Chris Collins' indictment on insider trading charges sent ripples through Washington on Wednesday. Collins, the first member of Congress to endorse Donald Trump for president, was key in supporting Mr. Trump early on.

One of the most pivotal moments in the prosecution's case actually, allegedly, took place at the White House picnic last year. CBS News' Sara Cook and Arden Farhi uncovered video of Collins on the phone, at what appears to be the same time federal investigators claim Collins was making a call to his son to tell him to sell stock in Australian biotech company Innate.

Here is a timeline of Chris Collins' relationship with the White House, and his insider trading allegation woes:

Feb. 24, 2016
Collins endorses Mr. Trump, becoming the first member of Congress to do so. Collins then holds weekly meetings with members of Congress to persuade them to support him.

West Virginia House committee votes to impeach entire state Supreme Court

Source: The Hill

A West Virginia House committee on Tuesday reportedly voted to impeach the entire state Supreme Court.

The state's House Judiciary Committee approved 14 articles of impeachment against all four sitting justices of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, the Charleston Gazette-Mail reported.

The charges against the sitting justices include "unnecessary and lavish" spending of taxpayer dollars, maladministration, corruption and neglect of duty, according to the newspaper.

For the most part, the justices face allegations that they used state resources and money to line their pockets and fund their lifestyles, it added.

Washington's last chance to save the endangered orcas - but is it too late?

Tragic event of grieving mother carrying dead calf for days sparks renewed effort to save killer whales as they fight for survival

Seattle’s orcas are dying. That they are dying publicly and painfully may save them.

First was Tahlequah’s calf. Born on 24 July, she died minutes later. Tahlequah buoyed her for a week before mother and calf disappeared.

Then came news Thursday that another young orca, Scarlet, appeared to be dying. Veterinarians and biologists rushed to help but have since lost track of the pod.

In Washington state, the events have focused attention on an effort to repair the broken habitat and stave off extinction of the fish-eating orca. At what governor Jay Inslee dubbed a meeting of the state’s “best and brightest” on Tuesday, the longtime activist Stephanie Solien described the weeks of heartbreak as a message from the orcas.

All Bet(o)s Are Off: Cruz Begs 'Sniveling Coward' Trump To Campaign For Him

By Kate Riga | August 8, 2018 10:16 am

In a move that shows clearly the strength of Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) asked his former enemy President Donald Trump Monday to come down and campaign for him.

According to a Tuesday Houston Chronicle report, Cruz telegraphed his need to the President during a campaign stop.

“I would certainly welcome his support, and I hope to see him in Texas,” Cruz said. “I think we are likely to see the President down in Texas before the election.”

Per the Houston Chronicle, polls from last week show O’Rourke pulling to within 1 point of the well-funded incumbent.

Manafort's Former Accountant Fired From Firm After Witness Testimony

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Nicole Lafond | August 8, 2018 10:09 am

The firm that employed Paul Manafort’s former accountant, Cindy Laporta, has fired Laporta and launched an internal investigation into her conduct after she provided witness testimony in the case against Manafort last week, Bloomberg reported Tuesday.

In her testimony, Laporta told the court she knew that Manafort’s tax returns contained false information, but she filed them anyway, out of fear of legal retaliation from Manafort and his former business partner Rick Gates.

In a Tuesday statement shared with Bloomberg, the firm Kositzka, Wicks & Co. said it was “shocked by Ms. Laporta’s testimony, which clearly represents that she failed to meet the firm’s high standards for professional and ethical conduct in her work for Mr. Manafort.”

The firm confirmed in a follow up email to Bloomberg that Laporta was “no longer working here.”

Laporta, who provided her testimony in exchange for immunity, told the court she knew Gates was using false loan documents to lower Manafort’s taxes and secure loans.

Trump has caused an identity crisis for American militias

"You have to ask, 'Are the militias primed for violence?'"

CASEY MICHEL AUG 8, 2018, 8:00 AM

America’s militias never expected to be here.

No one did, of course. Donald Trump was never supposed to reach the presidency. The powers that be — the powers that were — were supposed to prevent something like that from happening. The ones pulling the strings, those the fever-swamp conspiracists assumed were actually in charge, simply wouldn’t allow someone like Trump to access such power.

But then, in late 2016, Trump won. The man who was never supposed to be anywhere near power was sitting, eating, tweeting in the White House. Trump, the man backed by so many on the far-right, was president of the United States.

And America’s militias, with Trump from the beginning, didn’t know what to do. “For the first time in its 25-year history, the militia movement had a presidential candidate that they love,” Mark Pitcavage, a senior researcher with the Anti-Defamation League, told ThinkProgress. “This had never happened before.”

Suddenly, the government the militias had long feared and railed against was controlled by their man. Like that, they were forced to look for a new reason for being, a new group or movement to target with their ire.

https://thinkprogress.org/how-americas-militias-became-a-problem-in-search-of-a-cause-74221828e45e/

-snip-

“A paramilitary response to a Trump loss? We should be thinking about it, the sooner the better,” Jackson added. “If a Trump loss is in the cards, those of us who don’t want to see paramilitary violence should start thinking about it sooner or later. The last thing we want is to be blindsided.”

So maybe that’s where we are — maybe America’s militias, having spent the past 18 months looking for a cause, are simply waiting for the crisis to come, a crisis that’s now years in the making. After all, America’s militias never expected to be here. But that doesn’t mean they don’t know where they’re going.
