Donald Trump's Trade Wars Are Roiling Wisconsin GOP

By Cameron Joseph | August 14, 2018 6:00 am

PLATTEVILLE, WI — Steve North, the head of the Wisconsin Dairy Business Association, is enough of a dyed-in-the-wool Republican to spend his Monday morning at a campaign stop for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R). But when asked about how President Trump’s standing might effect his party this year, he immediately expressed concern over Trump’s ongoing trade wars.

“The reality is a change in our marketplace has been discomforting for sure, to say the least. There’s a lot of heartburn about where prices are at right now. So that will be something that we’ll have to work through as we come through fall,” North told TPM at a Walker campaign event at Digman Construction, a small company outside small-town Platteville in the state’s rural southwestern corner.

North’s group is nonpartisan, and has endorsed candidates from both parties in the past. He said he thought most Republican-leaning voters are willing to deal with some short-term economic pain to give Trump some time to figure things out, and doesn’t think it’s fair that others who voted for Trump are now unhappy with him doing what he promised to do.

“You don’t send a bull into a china shop and hope for a whole plate at the end,” North said.

Well North your economic well being is being undermined by a traitor, and as soon as you and others think in those terms, your full of shit and your die in the wool republican, you don't think or talk how the FDR plan helped you r industry, and just shows how much of hypocrite you really are, you think republicans saved your industry....................

And as for the asshole Walker, he rides a Harley, well, they are Union made, and he doesn't like unions, so he in essence he also is full of shit ........................to all of wisconsin voter's somewhere along the line, he approved the republican convention language praising Russia and the Ukraine and the lifting of those sanctions, he knew also he was enabling traitor...................he also should have called the FBI, and he didn't...........................

And then there is moment..............

So wisconsin you really have choice .....................party or country.....................we will see

Trump offers White House staffers discounted merch from his golf club

Ethics experts say the arrangement is a disturbing blurring of lines between his private business and the presidency.

By ANNIE KARNI and ELIANA JOHNSON 08/13/2018 03:24 PM EDT

There’s an under-the-radar perk being offered to staffers in President Donald Trump’s administration — discounts on Trump-branded merchandise sold at his Bedminster golf club.

White House staffers who have a Secret Service hard pin identifying them as administration officials can flash it at the pro shop — where Trump-branded driver headcovers retail for $40 and a Trump golf polo tee sells for $90, according to the online Trump store — and receive the same discount available to club members, who pay a reported $350,000 to join the club.

Those discounts range from 15 percent off of any merchandise sold in the store, to 70 percent off of clearance items, according to two staffers and a receipt reviewed by POLITICO.

The practice is the latest indication that being a public servant in this administration comes with special perks to sweeten the deal. The discounts available at the Bedminster club were originally pitched by the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, and the president himself as a nice gesture to aides, according to the recollection of someone familiar with the set-up. A White House spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment on who instituted the discounts available.

And a fucking republican congress getting items at a discount............fucking bribery is still bribery...................

Kavanaugh Thinks It's OK to Perform Elective Surgery on People Without Consent

Right now, Congress is in a deadlock over Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court. Senators are reviewing more than 1 million pages of his legal writing — which have laid out his stance on women’s reproductive rights (opposed), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (opposed), and the Affordable Care Act (opposed) — and members are battling over access to additional documentation that could reveal past experience with torture and wiretapping. While many of Kavanaugh’s opinions have been controversial — in particular his dissent from a decision that allowed an immigrant woman to have an abortion — one of his most problematic rulings has gone unreported. As a Judge in DC Circuit Court, Kavanaugh argued that people with disabilities could be forced to undergo elective surgeries, including abortion, without their consent.

In 2001, three intellectually disabled DC residents brought suit against the city in Doe ex rel. Tarlow v. D.C, after they were subjected to at least three involuntary procedures: two abortions and one elective eye surgery. Ultimately, the district court agreed that these women’s due process rights had been violated and that “constitutionally adequate procedures” had not been followed. The District Court ruled for the plaintiffs and held that DC must make “documented reasonable efforts to communicate” with patients and if unsuccessful, the government had to take into account the “totality of circumstances” before proceeding to ensure any decision is in the best interest of the patient. This decision codified patients’ right to self-determination, and struck down the practice of elective
surgeries without consent from the patients at stake.

On appeal, Judge Kavanaugh vacated the District Court’s injunction, arguing that “accepting the wishes of patients who lack, and have always lacked the mental capacity to make medical decisions does not make logical sense.” That stands in contrast to even the most conservative interpretations of the laws that existed at the time, which required two separate health professionals to determine whether a patient had the capacity to make medical decisions before every procedure. The lifetime pass Kavanaugh seems to be arguing for, which would allow doctors to perform any procedures they wanted on a person who was once ruled unfit, does not exist.

One hundred years ago, Kavanaugh’s ruling would have been at home on the Supreme Court. In the 1920’s, in the famous 8-1 ruling of Buck v. Bell, the Supreme Court found a Virginia statute that allowed for the sexual sterilization of a third generation, “feebleminded” women was constitutional because “three generations of imbeciles are enough.”

Miller's Uncle Blasts Him In Op-Ed: I've Watched Him With 'Dismay,' 'Horror'

By Nicole Lafond | August 13, 2018 9:42 am

Recounting White House aide Stephen Miller’s eastern European roots and his family’s efforts to enter the U.S. through chain migration, Miller’s uncle, David Glosser, slammed his nephew for his devotion to restricting legal immigration.

In a new op-ed in Politico magazine, Glosser claims that if the policies that Miller is advocating for now had been in place when his grandfather immigrated to the U.S. and eventually launched a chain of supermarkets and department stores, Miller likely wouldn’t be a citizen today.

“I have watched with dismay and increasing horror as my nephew, who is an educated man and well aware of his heritage, has become the architect of immigration policies that repudiate the very foundation of our family’s life in this country,” Glosser wrote.

He said his nephew had spent too much time in the “theater of ring wing politics” and has become “numb to the resultant human tragedy and blind to the hypocrisy of their policy decisions.”

Enacting deep cuts to legal immigration, including the method of chain migration that his ancestors used to gain entry to the U.S., has been a staple of Miller’s tenure within the White House. Miller also reportedly is advocating for policy that would make it more difficult for immigrants who entered the U.S. legally to become U.S. citizens or get their green card if they had ever used governmental services like Obamacare or food stamps.

Read Glosser’s scathing essay here.

Florida Gulf Coast's Algae Crisis Takes A Deadly Turn

By TAMARA LUSH, | August 13, 2018 12:55 pm

LONGBOAT KEY, Fla. (AP) — Tons of dead fish. A smell so awful you gag with one inhale. Empty beaches, empty roads, empty restaurants.

A toxic algae bloom has overrun Florida’s southern Gulf Coast this summer, devastating sea life and driving people from the water.

“I’ve never seen it this bad,” said 31-year-old Heather Lamb of Venice. She’s a hairdresser and makeup artist who styled herself as a dead mermaid and posted photos on social media to raise awareness of the problem. “I feel like it cleanses your soul to go to the beach. For me to not be able to go, it’s painful. I think a lot of people take for granted when they live in Florida. Some people save their paychecks for a whole year to come here.”

Red tide — a naturally occurring toxic algae bloom that can be harmful to people with respiratory problems— has spread throughout the Gulf of Mexico, drifting in the water since it began in October. Stretching about 150 miles (240 kilometers), it’s affecting communities from Naples in the south to Anna Maria Island in the north and appears to be moving northward.

The algae turns the water toxic for marine life, and in recent weeks beachgoers have been horrified to find turtles, large fish like goliath grouper and even manatees wash up dead. In late July, a 26-foot long (8-meter-long) whale shark washed ashore on Sanibel Island, which is known for its pristine beaches. In places like Longboat Key, more than 5 tons of dead fish have been removed from beaches. This week, nine dead dolphins were found in Sarasota County, and marine biologists are investigating whether the deaths are related to red tide.

Hey Rick Scott, and Marco Rubio, please tell the residents of Florida how much money did you get from the Sugar Cane producers and the developers....................after all Rubio you voted for one Scott Pruitt EPA (He left in disgrace) and then there is Scott, the fucking scam artist that bilked Floridians out of health care, and now this POS will not say anything because this happened on his watch, which will and can cause people to die, because after all most Floridians have no health care to combat this shit...................

'It's About Time': Meadows Celebrates Strzok Firing

By Nicole Lafond | August 13, 2018 1:41 pm

Chair of the House Freedom Caucus and one of the most vicious critics of the FBI celebrated the firing of FBI agent Peter Strzok, the agency official whose anti-Trump text messages have provided the greatest fodder for anti-FBI sentiment within the Republican Party.

“It’s about time,” Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) in a statement Monday.

Read the full statement below:

“Peter Strzok was fired from the FBI because of what his own written words plainly showed: he was willing to use his official FBI position to try and stop President Trump from getting elected. He tarnished the FBI’s sterling reputation and severely damaged public trust in an institution where trust is paramount. His conduct should deeply concern every American. I hope this development will allow us move to forward in restoring the character of an agency where so many brave men and women work tirelessly to keep America safe.

This is the right decision. It’s about time.”

Goodlatte's Son Flaunts Donation To Dem Running For Father's Seat

By Nicole Lafond | August 13, 2018 10:45 am

Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s (R-VA) son Bobby Goodlatte tweeted on Sunday that he made the maximum allowable donation to the campaign of the Democrat seeking to replace his father — Jennifer Lewis — and encouraged his followers to do the same.

Linking to the campaign website for Lewis, Bobby Goodlatte — a product designer and investor, according to his Twitter profile — expressed his interest in flipping districts for Democrats in 2018, apparently even his father’s.

Rep. Bob Goodlatte is one of more than 40 Republicans leaving Congress this year, either to retire or seek another office. Virginia State Delegate Ben Cline won the Republican primary to replace Goodlatte and will face off against Lewis this November.

Both a spokesperson for Rep. Goodlatte’s office and a message sent to his son were not returned immediately returned.

Call me a cynical, but where was he when is father was sitting in a hearing and Peter Strzok’s name was being besmirched by republicans......................did he say anything then....................

Prosecutors Challenge Judge's Ideas About Banker's Awareness of Alleged Manafort Fraud

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Tierney Sneed | August 13, 2018 11:38 am

Just because a bank CEO was aware that Paul Manafort was committing bank fraud doesn’t make Manafort’s conduct any less fraudulent, special counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecutors argued in a court filing Monday morning.

The filing appeared to be prompted by a bench discussion the attorneys had with the defense and Judge T.S. Ellis on Friday, pertaining to Steve Calk, the CEO of The Federal Savings Bank (TFSB) who served as a Trump campaign advisor.

Federal Savings Bank was one of a number of lenders that prosecutors say were misled by false representations made by Manafort in applying for millions of dollars in loans in late 2015 and 2016. Manafort was approved for a Federal Savings Bank loan the day after Calk expressed to the Trump campaign chair interest in working for Trump, a bank employee testified last week. The prosecution presented other evidence that Calk was promised campaign and administration positions while negotiating Manafort’s loans.

During Friday’s bench conversation about whether statements by Calk could be admitted, Ellis “expressed concern about the notion that TFSB could be defrauded when Calk, who ultimately approved these loans for TFSB, was going to approve the loans for personal reasons,” according to Monday’s filing.

-snip-

The prosecutors are asking that Ellis “recognize the lack of merit in any defense argument that Stephen Calk’s complicity in or awareness of Manafort’s fraud on TFSB renders immaterial as a matter of law Manafort’s false and fraudulent representations to TFSB for purposes of obtaining loans.”
