New Mexico: several arrested after SUV drives into Native American parade

Vehicle drove against direction of parade in Gallup, to celebrate the town’s 100th annual inter-tribal ceremony

Guardian staff and agencies
Fri 5 Aug 2022 09.40 EDT

Police have arrested several people who were in a large SUV that drove through a Native American celebration in New Mexico, causing multiple injuries along a parade route crowded with families. Two local police officers were among those hurt.

Videos show the large brown vehicle speeding down a main street in Gallup, close to the border with Arizona, against the direction of the parade.

Children performing traditional dances at the parade, to celebrate the town’s 100th annual inter-tribal ceremony, appear to have been among the first to see the vehicle rushing toward them.

Ron Johnson says funding for Social Security and Medicare should be optional

By Josh Israel -August 4, 2022 10:57 AM

Wisconsin Democratic Senate candidate Mandela Barnes responded, 'Self-serving, multimillionaire senator Ron Johnson wants to strip working people of the Social Security and Medicare they've earned.'

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) said on Aug. 2 that the nation's safety net programs should be made discretionary, putting their guaranteed benefits at risk for millions of older Americans. He joins a growing number of Republican Senate incumbents and challengers who are calling for major changes to the decades-old entitlements.

In an interview on Wisconsin radio station WTAQ with right-wing host Joe Giganti, Johnson argued that instead of Social Security and Medicare being funded through mandatory spending, Congress should be able to choose how much to spend on the programs each year so they don't "pile up debt" over time.

Hey R-Johnson, you, and that fraudsters R-Rick Scott (FL) and R-Blake Masters AR, paid exactly how much into social security while you were working, well, well, the fucking answer to that is that after "you" and your crony carnival barkers like Scott and Master don't pay a dime into the fund after you make $144,800.01 not one dime, while some on Social Security paid into the system for over 45 years....because I trust my government with "MY" money and not shysters like you three and your party beholden to the ponzi scheme in private equity and wall street.....so really go pound sand do you know by chance how many people in Wisconsin are on the two programs you hate.........here is a reminder ......of who you want to put out into the streets.....

On Trial: Pharmacist Refuses To Prescribe Plan B Due To 'Beliefs'

In what many consider the first case of its kind, a veteran Minnesota pharmacist went on trial Monday after allegedly refusing to dispense the morning-after pill to a woman due to his own personal beliefs on abortion and contraception.

By Aysha Qamar — August 4, 2022

In what many consider the first case of its kind, a veteran Minnesota pharmacist went on trial Monday after allegedly refusing to dispense the morning-after pill to a woman due to his own personal beliefs on abortion and contraception. According to NBC News, the woman, a mother of five, filed a civil lawsuit against the pharmacist for violating her civil rights by refusing to fill her prescription for emergency contraception.

The woman, identified as Andrea Anderson, is seeking unspecified damages. She wants an injunction requiring Badeaux and the pharmacy he works for to follow state law, which prohibits discrimination based on sex, including on issues related to pregnancy and childbirth.

Campaign Action

The incident took place in 2019 when Anderson sought emergency contraceptive after a condom broke during sex. While Anderson “acted quickly” the pharmacist on duty, George Badeaux, refused to fill Anderson’s prescription, claiming it would violate his "beliefs,"
the complaint said.

Revealed: Joe Manchin's price for supporting the climate change bill

By Pro Publica
Published August 05, 2022

From his Summers County, West Virginia, farmhouse, Mark Jarrell can see the Greenbrier River and, beyond it, the ridge that marks the Virginia border. Jarrell moved here nearly 20 years ago for peace and quiet. But the last few years have been anything but serene, as he and his neighbors have fought against the construction of a huge natural gas pipeline.

Jarrell and many others along the path of the partially finished Mountain Valley Pipeline through West Virginia and Virginia fear that it may contaminate rural streams and cause erosion or even landslides. By filing lawsuits over the potential impacts on water, endangered species and public forests, they have exposed flaws in the project’s permit applications and pushed its completion well beyond the original target of 2018. The delays have helped balloon the pipeline’s cost from the original estimate of $3.5 billion to $6.6 billion.

But now, in the name of combating climate change, the administration of President Joe Biden and the Democratic leadership in Congress are poised to vanquish Jarrell and other pipeline opponents. For months, the nation has wondered what price Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin would extract to allow a major climate change bill. Part of that price turns out to be clearing the way for the Mountain Valley Pipeline.

Arizona GOP Nominee For US Senate: Privatize Social Security

We've got it on video. Blake Masters is willing to "think outside the box" instead of protecting the retirements of US senior citizens.

By Frances Langum — August 3, 2022

Last night, Blake Masters won the Republican nomination for US Senate from Arizona -- he will face off against incumbent Mark Kelly in the Fall.

A reminder from this past June: Blake Masters wants to privatize Social Security, and said so out loud.

BLAKE MASTERS: We got to cut the knot at some point, though, because I'll tell you what, I'm not going to receive Social Security. I'm a millennial. ...We need fresh and innovative thinking. Maybe we should privatize Social Security. Private retirement accounts, get the government out of it.

Lindsey Graham wants to see the US bomb training camps in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) told reporters that he's satisfied with the slaying of the top al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri after a military action ordered by President Joe Biden. Still, Graham said he wants more.

"It's beyond brazen that he would be living in a house of the Minister of Interior," said Graham. "So, my advice would be to move assets forward, get countries in the region who would not benefit from an al-Qaeda rise, and start hitting the training camps."

“What unnerves me is that al-Zawahiri felt comfortable enough being out in the open in the Kabul area after the Taliban takeover. So much for the Taliban rejecting al Qaeda," Graham tweeted on Monday evening. "This is proof positive that Afghanistan has once again become a safe haven for international terrorists."

GOP senators introduce resolution to honor anti-abortion 'crisis pregnancy centers'

By Josh Israel -August 1, 2022 1:16 PM

Ron Johnson is among the Republican senators co-sponsoring Sen. Mike Lee's resolution to declare the week of the November election 'National Pregnancy Center Week.'

All 50 states will hold midterm elections on Nov. 8, 2022. If Republican Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and other congressional Republicans get their way, the week of the election will be officially designated in honor of anti-abortion pregnancy centers that misrepresent their purpose, claiming that they provide a range of services for pregnant people, lying about the supposed dangers of abortion, and manipulating patients to reject the procedure.

On July 29, Johnson announced that he and 18 other Senate Republicans had signed on as original co-sponsors of a resolution sponsored by Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee "[d]esignating the week beginning November 7, 2022, as 'National Pregnancy Center Week' to recognize the vital role that community-supported pregnancy centers play in saving lives and serving women and men faced with difficult pregnancy decisions."

Though they present themselves as health clinics, so-called crisis pregnancy centers are not medically regulated. They engage in actions aimed at misleading patients about abortion and manipulating them into delaying their decision on how to proceed with their pregnancy until it is legally too late to terminate it. Thousands of these centers operate across the country.

Republican senators are starting to freak out after blocking the veterans' health bill

By Sarah K. Burris
Published August 01, 2022

Republican senators have discovered that trying to block veterans from healthcare doesn't play well among American voters. With fewer than 100 days until the 2022 midterm elections, GOP senators who previously supported legislation to care for veterans with cancer due to burn pits voted it down. Now they're having second thoughts, Politico reported.

It was mere weeks ago when 84 Senators, all Democrats and a hefty chunk of Republicans, voted to pass the bill. One small tweak in the language was eliminated involving taking over private care, but it didn't change anything meaningful in the bill. But last week, Republicans voted it down. They've been trying to justify it by saying that Democrats added in all of these budget spending measures, but those were actually in the bill they supported.

Former "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart raged at Republican officials for the excuse in videos that have gone viral.

I am really happy that the vets and the families got Rick Scott of Florida to flip his vote.......but lets not forget he wants to take Medicare and sunset it every five years....and privatize it, he was going to do this on this VA bill....and he still on that mission wants to attack Medicare and wants to privatize it, the parents of these vets.....make no mistake....
