Six young orca calves were separated from their mothers in 1970 and sold to marine parks. Only one is still alive at the Miami Seaquarium
Five decades ago, a group of men rounded up more than 80 orcas in a cove on Whidbey Island off Washington state. Using boats, explosives, nets and sticks, they separated young orca calves from their mothers. Locals were haunted by the whales’ human-like cries, according to an account of the day.
Six baby whales were taken away that day in Penn Cove and sold to marine parks. Most didn’t last a year in captivity. Only one who was captured and sold is still alive.
That female whale has spent the past 52 years of her life in a pool in the Miami Seaquarium – the smallest orca enclosure in North America – performing for crowds until her retirement earlier this year.

Kari Lake, the Republican candidate for governor of Arizona who has embraced far-right fringe figures, and QAnon activists, tried to lecture the media in a very demeaning way, but it didn't go down well.
Lake was called out for trying to make the homelessness problem in her state all about her. She appears to have narcissistic traits, just like her hero, Donald Trump, and it's especially evident in this clip when she had an exchange with reporter Brahm Reznik, who was in no mood for her sh*t.
"The media never covers the homeless problem," Lake said while lecturing reporters standing in front of her to cover the homeless problem. "Not a single one of you have tried to cover this story. You get caught up in a bunch of b.s. stories that the public doesn't care about."

Michigan House Democrats seek censure of Rep. Rendon over election tampering allegations

Michigan House Democrats released a resolution Friday that would censure state Rep. Daire Rendon (R-Lake City) for coercive abuse of office in service of a crime.
The drafting of the resolution follows a decision earlier this week by Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office to seek a special prosecutor to look into whether Rendon and eight others, including GOP Attorney General candidate Matt DePerno, took part in a conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to, and then tamper with, election equipment and data after the 2020 election.
It’s unlikely to be taken up in the GOP-controlled House. A spokesperson for House Speaker Jason Wentworth (R-Farwell) this week told MLive that Rendon will keep her committee assignments to “let the legal process play out.”

House Republican says classified Mar-a-Lago nuclear material is available 'on your own phone'

United States Congressman Mike Turner (R-Ohio) suggested on Friday that the nuclear documents that the Federal Bureau of Investigation reportedly recovered from former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida during the execution of a search warrant on Monday are no big deal.
"I can tell you that there are a number of things that are classified that fall under the umbrella of nuclear weapons but that are not necessarily things that are truly classified," Turner, who serves on the House Intelligence Committee, told reporters at a press conference. "Many of them you can find on your own phone as we stand here and if they fall into that category, they're not an imminent national security threat that would rise to the level of, you have to raid Donald Trump's home and spend nine hours there."
There are "two types of classification," according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's website. "The first type, known as national security information, is information that is classified by an Executive Order. Its release would damage national security to some degree. The second type, known as restricted data, is information that is classified by the Atomic Energy Act. It would assist individuals or organizations in designing, manufacturing, or using nuclear weapons. Access to both types of information is restricted to authorized persons who have been properly cleared and have a 'need to know' the information for their official duties. Federal Magistrate Judge William Matthewman has set an expedited schedule after Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the Department of Justice moved to unseal the Mar-a-Lago search warrant and property receipt.
Matthewman instructed DOJ to "immediately serve a copy of its Motion on counsel for former President Donald Trump."
"On or before 3.:00 p.m. Eastern time on August 12, 2022, the United States shall file a certificate of conferral advising whether President Trump opposes the Government's motion to unseal," the Judge explained.

Attorney General Merrick Garland held a press conference on Thursday revealing the Department of Justice has moved to unseal the Mar-a-Lago search warrant and redacted property receipt listing the items seized.
Following the press conference, former federal prosecutor Elie Honig offered his analysis during a CNN interview.
"We essentially saw Merrick Garland call Donald Trump's bluff," Honig said. "So essentially Merrick Garland said, 'Okay, Donald Trump, you're not going to release them, we're going to do it, we're going to put those documents in front of the American public.'"

Former President Donald Trump attacked Barack Obama on Thursday after Attorney General Merrick Garland made a statement announcing that he plans to unseal the search warrant issued against Mar-a-Lago.
Garland said that normally the department wouldn't have said anything and simply spoken through their court filings but in this case he wanted to make it clear that they made every effort to obtain the documents requested and were unable to obtain them from the former president.
Garland did not explain the reason for the search, but stressed there was "probable cause" and said he had asked a court to make the case's documents public.

Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman on Tuesday slammed his GOP opponent in the state's U.S. Senate election, Mehmet Oz, for taking advantage of a tax break under a program originally intended to help struggling farmers, saying the tax relief underscores how the celebrity doctor seeks to benefit from Pennsylvania instead of serving the state.
Oz, who has been known for years as TV personality Dr. Oz, purchased a farmstead in Montgomery County late last year, weeks after he announced he was running for Senate. Oz has homes in Florida and New Jersey and has been staying at a Pennsylvania house owned by his in-laws since 2020, when Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) announced his plan to retire.
As the Philadelphia Inquirer reported Tuesday, the $3.1 million Montgomery County property is eligible for a tax relief and conservation program called Act 319, which gives landowners a more favorable tax assessment in return for protecting land from development.

A little over a year ago, Nancy Thompson, an Austin mother of three kids, stood alone for two and half hours in front of the Texas Capitol with a sign that said “Mothers Against Greg Abbott.”
She was most upset about the governor’s ban on mask mandates, worried about her son who was medically vulnerable to COVID-19 after being hospitalized for another virus that had “infected all his organs,” she said.
“Honestly, I just didn’t give a shit anymore,” Thompson said. “I was just done. I was so done.”
