GOP congressman: We have mass shootings because we don't teach kids not to covet

By
Josh Israel -
September 11, 2019

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) thinks suicides and mass shootings happen because politicians encourage "jealousy" and "covetousness."

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told House colleagues that teaching the Bible in schools is the only way to stop gun violence. And he blamed the rise in suicides and mass shootings on politicians teaching children to desire stuff.

At a House Judiciary Committee markup on Tuesday, lawmakers considered legislation to address gun violence through "extreme risk protection orders" (red flag laws that allow courts to temporarily arm those deemed a violent threat to others or themselves), limits on high-capacity magazines, and new restrictions on gun ownership for those convicted of hate crimes. All three measures passed, but Gohmert was not happy.

"I would just submit to you that we can use these words and try to craft laws," he argued. "But people will continue to kill themselves at a higher and higher alarming rate. And there will be continuing these mass shootings we didn't use to deal with."

GOP admits 2 more recall efforts have failed in Colorado

By

September 11, 2019

Republicans admitted defeat in two more recall efforts, failing as they did at the ballot box last November.

After losing races across Colorado in the 2018 midterm election, Republicans schemed to bypass the will of the voters and recall a number of Democratic lawmakers. On Tuesday, Republican operatives admitted defeat in two of those efforts, according to KRDO.

The group leading the recall effort against state Sens. Pete Lee and Brittany Pettersen told the Colorado secretary of state's office that they would not be turning in the required signatures by this week's deadline.

The news comes after Republicans failed to recall both Gov. Jared Polis and state Rep. Thomas Sullivan, a father who lost his son in 2012's mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora.

"If Colorado Republicans want to keep wasting their time on these Sisyphean recall attempts, we'll gladly keep batting them down," Matt Harringer, press secretary for the DLCC, said in a statement. "These radical Republicans can't win at the ballot box, so they're playing political games," he added.

Arizona's unelected senator accidentally admits she's unhappy serving in Congress

By

Martha McSally, Arizona's unelected Republican senator, recently thanked God that she has not been a senator for very long.

Voters didn't want her to represent them in the Senate, and apparently Martha McSally, Arizona's unelected Republican senator, is none too happy to be there either.

In a Tuesday Senate hearing, McSally seemed to admit that she had reservations representing her state in the Senate.

"I haven't been here that long, thank God," McSally said during a Senate Banking Committee hearing. Seeming to realize what she said, McSally immediately uttered, "Sorry, I shouldn't have said that."

'They could indict a sitting president': Watergate prosecutor breaks down Trump's legal trouble in N

Published 26 mins ago on September 11, 2019

By Matthew Chapman

On Wednesday, former Watergate prosecutor Nick Akerman discussed the implications of the New York DA’s investigation into the Trump Organization on MSNBC’s “All In” — and why it could play out entirely differently from the federal investigations.

“The big difference here is that Cy Vance is the local prosecutor,” said Akerman. “He is the state prosecutor in New York County. So he is not concerned with federal crimes. He’s concerned with state crimes. But I think we have a continuous theme here that pervades all of this. And it’s simply that all roads lead to Donald Trump’s tax returns. To make this a serious crime and a serious felony, falsifying business records is usually associated with falsifying numbers so that they falsify in turn the tax returns.”

“Interesting,” said anchor Ali Velshi.

“So in this particular case, it could very well be that they are looking at the false state tax returns that have been filed by the Trump Organization, filed by Donald Trump, and there could be all kinds of people who could have criminal liability here,” continued Akerman. “If it’s just Donald Trump, obviously, the problem there is indicting a sitting president, although the Manhattan DA’s office is not under the same stricture as the Department of Justice. They could indict a sitting president.”

Republican says they had to lie about vote to Democrats at 9/11 ceremonies -- or 'the terrorists win'

Published 1 hour ago on September 11, 2019

By Matthew Chapman

Republicans in the North Carolina House of Representatives have come under furious criticism for a vote overriding Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of their budget bill, which blocks Medicaid expansion and underfunds public schools. Particularly at issue is the way they passed it — in a surprise morning vote, with half the Democratic lawmakers busy attending 9/11 memorial services, after promising Democrats that it was okay to skip the morning session because no votes would be held there.

State Rep. Jason Saine, however, sees no problem with any of this. Indeed, he told reporters, if Republicans hadn’t lied to Democrats and passed a partisan bill while they were away mourning 9/11, the terrorists would win.

“As a former firefighter and an American, I am appalled that anyone in our country would stop going about their normal business on this day,” said Saine. “When we stop being a beacon of freedom, hope and democracy, then the terrorists win.”

As Daily Kos’ Jennifer Hayden noted, Saine’s sentiment is not shared by the East Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department, where he had worked — although Saine disputed that he was in any way disrespecting their message:

Pence family boondoggle in Ireland cost U.S. taxpayers $600,000 for the limos alone: report

Written by Jen Hayden / Daily Kos September 10, 2019

Vice President Mike Pence went to Poland to stand in for Donald Trump, who decided to stay behind in the U.S. for a weekend of monitoring Hurricane Dorian from his golf cart. Pence met with Polish President Andrzej Duda on behalf of Trump in an effort to build support for allowing Russia to be re-admitted to the G-7, something all the other members of the G-7 oppose because of Putin’s aggressive actions in the Crimea region of Ukraine, which he annexed for Russia.

Senate Democrats are about to force Republicans to take a vote in favor of Trump defunding their own

Published 1 min ago
on September 10, 2019

By Matthew Chapman

On Tuesday, Politico congressional correspondent Burgess Everett reported that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is planning to introduce a new resolution of disapproval against President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration at the southern border.

This will mark the second such vote in the Senate, as Democrats also forced one immediately after Trump declared the emergency. They have the power to force these votes every six months.

Voting against the new resolution could be especially awkward for Republicans, as the Trump administration just released a comprehensive list of the military projects being defunded to pay for the border wall — many of which are in their own states.

The last time around, the resolution passed 59 to 41, with 12 Republicans voting to condemn the president’s emergency — only to be stopped by Trump’s veto.

Donald Trump does not like spies, thinks they get in the way of his 'personal relationships'

Mark Sumner
Daily Kos Staff

Following the revelation that the CIA was forced to remove a top intelligence asset at the Kremlin, there are really only two people happy about the results. One is Vladimir Putin, who is now much more free to plan new weapons, stage invasions, and interfere in elections without some pesky spy leaking info back to Langley. The other is Donald Trump. Not only is Trump relieved that someone with direct knowledge of his connections to Putin is no longer in position, but CNN is reporting that Trump is “skeptical” of intelligence assets in general.

Skeptical isn’t the end of it. Trump has repeatedly expressed opposition to the use of foreign intelligence assets—even when those assets provide “crucial information about hostile countries.”

As a firm believer in snitches get stitches, Trump has long made it clear that he has no respect for anyone who gives up his private secrets, even in the face of little things like the law or national security. Just as Trump made clear to James Comey, loyalty to Trump personally is supposed top every other concern. So it really should not be surprising that when it comes to the idea of someone hanging around whose job it is to let the secrets escape the room, Trump is not a fan.

When meeting with Vladimir Putin, Trump has gone out of his way to avoid spies through the simplest means available—getting rid of everyone, even on some occasions the interpreter. The same is true of Trump’s meetings with Kim Jong Un and others. Trump doesn’t want anyone hearing what he says to foreign leaders, what they say to him, and what kind of deals they propose.
