Native Americans overcome North Dakota's restrictive voter ID laws, turn out in record numbers

Turnout was high, but ID confusion, distant polling places, and even accusations of a conflict of interest worked against these voters.

FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA — In a unified effort to rebuke North Dakota’s restrictive voter ID laws and defend their right to vote, the state’s Native American population showed up to the polls in record numbers on Tuesday.

Voting advocacy groups and tribal leaders worked overtime, down the wire, and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to get Native voters the tribal IDs needed to successfully cast a ballot — despite a controversial and restrictive state ID law that made it more difficult for them to vote.

Judith LeBlanc, a Caddo Tribe member and director of Native Organizers Alliance, helped organize an aggressive get-out-the-vote campaign in Standing Rock. She and other activists knocked on doors in the blistering cold throughout the reservation in the two weeks leading up to Election Day and on Tuesday, bused voters to the polls.

People on Standing Rock “believed they had the right to vote and they want to make their right count,” LeBlanc told ThinkProgress. They “exercised their sovereign, civil, and inherent right to vote in this historic election.”

Ultimately, and in spite of restrictive laws that complicated the voting process for them, North Dakota’s Native Americans by and large made a point with high turnout. And community leaders are hoping turnout only goes up in future elections.

“It’s a big deal,” said Semans. “But that significance came from hundreds of thousands of dollars from the tribes to get their people to vote. There was still voter suppression going on, so we could have gotten more. But with all the crap, we are happy with what we got.”

Gerrymandering suffered big, potentially permanent blows last night

The United States inches closer to being a democratic republic.
IAN MILLHISER
NOV 7, 2018, 11:00 AM

The biggest story of Tuesday’s election is that Democrats overcame Republican gerrymanders intended to lock them out of power in the House of Representatives. In the long run, however, an even bigger story may be that gerrymandering itself suffered a significant loss last night.

Michigan, one of the most gerrymandered states in the Union, overwhelmingly approved a state constitutional amendment which provides that future legislative maps will be drawn by an independent commission. At the peak of its effectiveness, in 2012, Michigan’s gerrymander allowed Republicans to win 9 of the state’s 14 U.S. House seats, despite the fact that President Obama won the state by over 9 points that year.

This victory for democracy is part of a larger pattern. Ohio approved a ballot measure last May which creates a Rube Goldberg-like series of obstacles to lawmakers seeking to gerrymander that state. Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court struck down that state’s gerrymandered maps last January — allowing Democrats to gain three seats in that state yesterday. And one more large state will likely see its gerrymanders fall shortly.

North Carolina’s legislative maps are so aggressively gerrymandered that, even though the state frequently has competitive statewide elections, Republicans currently hold veto-proof majorities in both houses of the state’s legislature. They lost those supermajorities in the incoming state house, but will still dominate both houses. After yesterday’s election, however, Democrats will control a 5-2 majority on the North Carolina Supreme Court. That means that they can bring Pennsylvania-style gerrymandering reform to that state.

Voters approve additional public education funding in several states

Several states and one city were asked to consider ballot measures that would better fund public education.
CASEY QUINLAN
NOV 7, 2018, 9:42 AM

Voters across the country on Tuesday made ballot decisions to help fund public schools, which are increasingly starved for resources. Most of them were successful, with six education initiatives passing overall, in places like Seattle, Washington; Georgia; Maryland; Montana; and two in the state of Maine.

Four education initiatives were defeated in Colorado, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Utah.

Education funding has dropped drastically in recent years. Twenty-nine states were providing less total school funding per student in 2015 than in 2008, according to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. In 19 states, local government funding also fell. In more than half of the states in the United States, the poorest districts — districts with the highest rates of poverty — get $1,000 less per pupil in state and local funding than districts with the lowest poverty rates, according to The Education Trust.

The fact that education initiatives were on the ballot at all in several states, then, is at least a step in the right direction.

We looked through the fake Russian Instagram accounts pulled down yesterday. Here's what we found.

The fake Instagram accounts aimed at fans across the political spectrum, from John Oliver to the Kardashians to Tomi Lahren.
CASEY MICHEL
NOV 7, 2018, 9:59 AM

On Tuesday morning, ThinkProgress broke the news that a new website claiming to tamper with the midterm elections was created by a Russian company mentioned in one of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s indictments.

And by Tuesday evening, Facebook announced that it had removed over 100 accounts — many on Instagram — associated with the website, and presumably with Russia’s Internet Research Agency (IRA).

“Last night, following a tip off from law enforcement, we blocked over 100 Facebook and Instagram accounts due to concerns that they were linked to the Russia-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) and engaged in coordinated inauthentic behavior, which is banned from our services,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of cyber security policy, said in a statement. “This evening a website claiming to be associated with the IRA published a list of Instagram accounts they claim to have created.”

The website, which claimed to provide the “Official Statement of the Internet Research Agency,” went live over the weekend. It was created by Azimut LLC, one of the LLCs mentioned in Mueller’s February 2018 indictment identifying a number of Russian nationals as responsible for Russia’s 2016 social media interference campaign.

On Tuesday evening, the website published an additional statement. “Facebook and intelligence agencies tried to stop us but they only managed to uncover 1/25 of the whole picture,” the page read. The page then listed dozens of Instagram accounts — some of which were already suspended, but some of which remained live as of Tuesday evening.

GOP made it easier to subpoena presidential administrations in 2015. Now Democrats have that power.

What a Democratic majority could mean for the Trump administration.
JOSH ISRAEL
NOV 7, 2018, 8:09 AM

Back in 2015, the House Republican majority changed the rules in the House to make it easier for them to subpoena the Obama administration. Rather than involve members of the Democratic minority in the process at all, they simply authorized their own committee chairs to unilaterally issue subpoenas to anyone they wished.

Come January, that may well come back to haunt the dwindling number of Republicans left in the U.S. House of Representatives. The result: for the first time, Donald Trump and his administration may soon face some real oversight.

Unlike some legislative bodies, the House essentially works on simple majority rule. With 218 votes, the majority does not need a single vote from the minority to issue subpoenas for testimony and documents — or to change its own rules. This means that after two years with largely no scrutiny at all, the Trump administration could soon be forced to be transparent with the American public about its conflicts of interest, compliance with the law, and myriad examples of corruption.

“Most, if not all, current congressional committees have utterly failed in their oversight responsibilities of the current administration,” Aaron Scherb, director of legislative affairs at Common Cause, told ThinkProgress. “Democratic ranking members have requested information from the executive branch and most of those requests for information are being ignored.” A Democratic majority, he predicts, will “be able to put teeth behind those information requests [and] have more administration officials testify before the relevant committees to help fulfill the checks and balances that are largely absent from the current Republican Congress.”

Boeing Jet Crashed in Indonesia After Key Sensor Replaced

Source: New York Times

By The Associated Press
Nov. 7, 2018

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A crucial sensor that is the subject of a Boeing Co. safety bulletin was replaced on a Lion Air jet the day before it plunged into the Java Sea and possibly worsened other problems with the plane, Indonesian investigators said Wednesday.

Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee said it had agreed with Boeing on procedures that the airplane manufacturer should distribute globally on how flight crews can deal with "angle of attack" sensor problems following the Oct. 29 crash that killed all 189 people on board.

The sensor keeps track of the angle of the aircraft nose relative to oncoming air to prevent the plane from stalling and diving.

But a Boeing statement said a safety bulletin, sent to airlines on Tuesday, directs flight crews to existing guidelines on how they should respond to erroneous "angle of attack" data. It wasn't immediately clear if it plans an update, though comments from Indonesian officials indicate they expect one.

If the AOA sensor (angle of attack) on the outside of the plane has been replaced, a maintenance manual procedure must be accomplished.

The angle of attack sensor looks like a triangle shaped wing, that is on the side of the plane, (usually left hand side) it must have a Rosecran attached to the outside of the fuselage to perform the ground test when the angle of attack wing or sensor is moved to the associated degrees marking on the Rosecrans, if the angle of attack sensor is put in the down position the control wheel stick must start shaking, and the stall must be avoided by pushing the control wheel forward , if the sensors is placed in the up position a overspeed warning light will illuminated also with stick shaker bell going off.

This means that the plane is suppose to be jacked up and put in flight configuration to perform that stall warning check if the LRU (line replacement unit) and the angle of attack sensor have been replaced..................that is the question was this procedure performed.................
