The mother of a teenage cancer survivor is speaking out against Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH) for voting to strip protections from people like her daughter, and for ignoring their pleas for help.
Colleen Bowman and her 14 year-old daughter Ella appear in a powerful new ad for Democratic challenger Aftab Pureval, in which Mrs. Bowman urges voters to remember Chabot’s record on Election Day.
“If Steve Chabot had his way, Ella could be left without healthcare,” Bowman says in the ad.
“Steve Chabot has voted to strip protections from people with pre-existing conditions,” Bowman continues. “I know, because my daughter and I repeatedly contacted Steve Chabot, begging him to protect cancer survivors like Ella. He ignored us.”

The M.I.A. Academic At Center Of Russia Probe Has A 'Habit Of Disappearing'

LONDON (AP) — The Maltese academic who allegedly dropped the first hint that Russians would interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election has gone missing — and an Associated Press investigation shows that this isn’t the first time.
Joseph Mifsud has emerged as one of the more enigmatic players in U.S. special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election.
“Joseph has the habit of disappearing,” said Abdelhamid ElZoheiry, one of Mifsud’s successors at the Euro-Mediterranean University in Slovenia, where the latter had a troubled tenure as president during a between 2008 and 2012.
A U.S. court document made public last year alleged that it was Mifsud who dropped the first hint of the hacking that rocked the presidential campaign when, at a London meeting in April 2016, he told an adviser to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump that the Kremlin had “thousands of emails” about his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

Never-before-published emails offer a window into the Trumps’ approach, this time in a failed condo project in Tampa. “They must think we are the dumbest people,” Donald Jr. wrote in one.
In November 2007, The Wall Street Journal infuriated Donald Trump with an article that dissected his recent real estate setbacks. Headlined “Stalled Condo Projects Tarnish Trump’s Name,” the report raised doubt about what the mogul treasured — and banked on — most in business: the value of his personal brand.
Trump responded with a 512-word letter to the editor. Calling the story “one of the most ridiculous I have read in many years,” he complained that it ignored his “tremendous successes with massive projects” and instead focused on “small jobs” in the Florida cities of Tampa and Fort Lauderdale. He dismissed both as licensing deals “for which I am not responsible for development.”
Trump’s reaction offers another capsule of his habit of twisting the truth regarding his real estate deals — one of the patterns explored in detail in “Pump and Trump,” which focused on a deal in Panama. That article concluded that, contrary to the Trumps’ longtime claims that they merely licensed their name, they were deeply involved in their deals.
A trove of until-now unreported emails from inside the Trump Organization, unearthed during a lawsuit against the company filed after the Tampa project collapsed — the building was never constructed — sheds light not only on a U.S. Trump project, but also provides a rare glimpse inside the organization. (The suit, filed by people who had paid deposits in advance to buy condo units, was eventually settled, with the buyers receiving partial refunds of their deposits.) The documents provide copious detail on one of the “small jobs” that Trump would later claim he had merely lent his name to. And they reveal the same patterns of behavior seen in “Pump and Trump.”

President Donald Trump is said to be ready to nominate couture handbag designer and Palm Beach resident Lana Marks to become ambassador to South Africa, making her the fourth member of the Mar-a-Lago Club that the president has tapped for an ambassadorship.
The potential nomination of yet another Mar-a-Lago member to a top post in the administration may again raise questions about whether Trump is doling out favors to those who can afford Mar-a-Lago’s $200,000 membership fee, annual dues of $14,000 and a $2,000 minimum dining requirement.
Other club members recruited by Trump for top diplomatic posts include:
Robin Bernstein, a founding member of Mar-a-Lago and staunch supporter and defender of the president, as ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
Philanthropist Patrick Park, who once claimed that most of the 200 fundraisers he hosted were at Mar-a-Lago, was picked as ambassador to Austria but cited family responsibilities when he turned down Trump’s invitation.

Heritage Foundation's Ethically Dubious Law Clerk 'Training Academy' Suspended

The Heritage Foundation’s “training academy,” set up to groom law clerks for prominent judicial posts, has been suspended after the New York Times published the questionable requirements of the program, including secrecy about the teaching participants received there in exchange for the financial backing of “generous donors” who allowed them to complete the program.
Some legal experts told the Times that it is inherently problematic for a very conservative group to secretly train future judges to have loyalty to its ideals and practices.
Some of the questions on the application materials — since removed from the Heritage Foundation’s website — reportedly inquired about potential participants’ stance on originalism and ideological alignment with current or former Supreme Court justices. As the Times points out, it is unclear if a participant who took liberal stances on those two essay questions would have been admitted.
“Law clerks are not supposed to be part of a cohort of secretly financed and trained partisans of an organization that describes itself on its own web page as ‘the bastion of the American conservative movement,’” Stanford Law professor Pamela Karlan told the Times. “The idea that clerks will be trained to elevate the Heritage Foundation’s views, or the views of judges handpicked by the foundation, perverts the very idea of a clerkship.”

Supreme Court justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch were picked from a list of contenders curated by the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society, another conservative organization focused on the judiciary.

Democrat Charges Nunes Concealed Russia Evidence From Mueller

A top member of the House Intelligence Committee has revealed shocking details about how Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) abused his position as committee chairman to obstruct the Mueller investigation and shield Trump from accountability.
In a blistering op-ed for Nunes’ hometown Fresno Bee, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), said that Nunes blocked committee Democrats from following up on leads about “worrisome contacts between the Russians and candidate Trump, his family, his businesses, and his campaign.”
What’s more, Swalwell said, Nunes blocked special counsel Robert Mueller from seeing evidence that “many witnesses committed perjury or offered information relevant to the special counsel’s work” when they testified before the committee.
After months of refusing to release this evidence — specifically, transcripts of the witness interviews from the House Russia investigation — Nunes finally relented a few weeks ago.
But Swalwell revealed that in doing so, Nunes blocked Democrats from sharing the transcripts with Mueller, and with the public.

Zervos Lawsuit Judges Fret Over Whether NY Court Can Jail A Sitting President

NEW YORK (AP) — Appeals court judges weighing President Donald Trump’s bid to shut down a former “Apprentice” contestant’s defamation suit against him are asking a hypothetical question: Could a New York court order the president to jail if he were to buck an order in the case?
The question came up — but wasn’t definitively answered — as lawyers for Trump and ex-contestant Summer Zervos argued Thursday in a New York appeals court.
Zervos sued Trump for calling her a liar after she accused him of unwanted kissing and groping in two incidents in 2007. Trump’s lawyers are trying to get the case dismissed or delayed until after his presidency.
Thursday’s court session focused on one of the Trump legal team’s central arguments: that a sitting president can’t be sued in a state court over conduct outside official duties. It made for a discussion largely about Constitutional clauses and legal interpretation.

Republicans smear murdered journalist to cover for Trump

Trump's allies are orchestrating a smear campaign against Jamal Khashoggi to take the heat off Trump for his failure to hold Saudi Arabia accountable.
In a sick new form of victim-blaming, Republicans and right-wing pundits are mounting a smear campaign against murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi in what appears to be a twisted effort to shield Trump from criticism of his poor handling of the scandal.
Citing four anonymous GOP officials, the Washington Post reports that “a cadre of conservative House Republicans allied with Trump has been privately exchanging articles from right-wing outlets that fuel suspicion of Khashoggi,” an apparent first step in a coming character assault.
What started as a behind-the-scenes “whispering campaign” has begun to spill over into the public eye as pro-Trump media figures and platforms — including Rush Limbaugh, Donald Trump Jr., Front Page, Fox News, and several prominent voices on social media — have started to amplify the attacks and conspiracy theories about Khashoggi, who was reportedly murdered and dismembered at the Saudi consulate in Instanbul under orders from the Saudi crown prince.
The smears, which have been amplified by pro-Saudi accounts on Twitter, “are aimed in part at protecting Trump” and supporting his refusal to confront his allies in the Saudi regime about the slain journalist, the Post reports. On Thursday, Twitter removed a network of pro-Saudi automated accounts (“bots”) that were spreading false claims about Khashoggi.

The Department of the Interior has selected Karen Budd-Falen, an anti-public lands advocate, for a senior legal position at the department. The move is controversial: Budd-Falen is an ally of right-wing extremist Cliven Bundy, who is best known for leading an armed 2014 standoff with federal officials in Nevada after he refused to pay his grazing fees.
Budd-Falen is a Wyoming-based property rights attorney who worked as a member of the Trump administration’s transition team for the Interior Department. She is scheduled to begin work on November 1 as the deputy solicitor for Parks and Wildlife working on issues related to endangered species, wildlife refuges, and national monuments.
The attorney had reportedly been previously considered to lead the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). But Budd-Falen withdrew her name from consideration for the top BLM spot in March, claiming the decision was made after she was asked to sell her interest in her family ranch.
Others contend she withdrew because her anti-public lands and anti-federal land management positions raised questions about her ability to pass Senate confirmation.

Insect collapse study 'one of the most disturbing articles I have ever read,' expert warns

A disturbing new study finds that global warming helped drive as much as a 60-fold decline in insect population in Puerto Rico’s tropical rainforest between 1976 and 2013.
“Our results suggest that the effects of climate warming in tropical forests may be even greater than anticipated,” said lead author, biologist Brad Lister, of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
And that’s a potentially catastrophic problem given that the forest saw 3.6°F (2°C) warming during that time — yet warming this century is on track to be far greater.
These new findings follow several studies in recent years that found collapsing insect populations around the world.
A 2014 review of scientific literature and data in the journal Science found the number of insects “such as beetles, butterflies, spiders and worms has decreased by 45 percent” since 1980. The reason: “loss of habitat and global climate disruption.”
