Republicans join far-right figures at Montana anti-government event

State politicians and Oregon occupation leader Ammon Bundy address gathering against federal land management

At a conference in Whitefish, Montana, on Saturday Ammon Bundy, a leader of a group which occupied federal land in 2016, shared a stage with Republican politicians, campaigners against Indian treaty rights and other rightwing groups.

The event, A New Code of the West, was hosted by The West is Our West, a group created in 2016 that has opposed environmentalism and federal land management. The conference attracted around 100 people from five western states.

Speakers addressed the issue of public lands, the administration of which by the federal government they see as constitutionally illegitimate, a belief at odds with most constitutional scholars and supreme court decisions.

Speakers also evinced hostility to the news media and the federal government. Some expressed conspiratorial beliefs.

Sacramento rockers Cake want you to 'Vote Like Hell' for this local congressional candidate

BY JOSHUA TEHEE

Sacramento rock band Cake is hitting the campaign trail in advance of November’s mid-terms election.

The band, known for the 2001 song “Short Skirt/Long Jacket,” is out front with the “Vote Like Hell” project, which helps potential voters register and find polling places with events such as the just announced fundraiser concert for Andrew Janz on Friday, Nov. 2 at the Crest Theatre in downtown Fresno.

Tickets for the event are $40 and $100 (VIP) and available through the online fundraising platform ActBlue, which is expected to raise more than $1 billion in contributions to Democratic candidates and causes during this election cycle.

That includes Janz, the Democrat who is challenging incumbent Devin Nunes for California’s 22nd congressional district.

We need tax police - and they should go after the likes of Donald Trump

David Cay Johnston

A staggering New York Times report on Trump family tax payments proved it: Congress must let the Internal Revenue Service do its job

When the New York Times exposed decades of tax cheating and “outright fraud” by the sitting president, it prompted people to ask important questions about the corrupt practices of the Trump family. The answers are central to the future of America.

Where was the Internal Revenue Service? How did the Trumps get away with decades of schemes the Times said allowed them to evade close to a half-billion dollars of income and gift taxes? Is Donald Trump continuing these practices? Is that why he refuses to make his own tax returns public? Can anything be done about it?

I’m in a unique position to answer those questions. I am the Times’ former tax reporter, the journalist who has covered Trump longer than anyone else, more than 30 years. And my next book will propose an entirely new tax system for the US and other advanced nations.

The answers to the first and second questions are as easy as they are awful.

Congress, which makes tax law, has never properly supported the IRS, which I like calling the Tax Police Department.

Let’s hope it decides to work on equal enforcement of the tax laws. Every dollar of tax evaded adds to America’s debt. It means less money to invest in basic scientific research, education and modernizing crumbling infrastructure. Taxes are at the core of democracy. The power to tax is the specific reason the American constitution was adopted, replacing the government-by-bake-sale financing under the Articles of Confederation.

Is Trump on a Collision Course With Impeachment?

Democrats are largely ducking the topic on the campaign trail, but few people in Washington doubt that it will be on the table if they win the House.

Oct. 13, 2018

By Peter Baker
Mr. Baker is the chief White House correspondent for The Times and an author, with Jon Meacham, Timothy Naftali and Jeffrey A. Engel, of “Impeachment: An American History.”

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — President Trump was energized. Fresh from the fight to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, he was firing up thousands of supporters at a rally by complaining about how Democrats had treated his nominee and how they may yet try to remove Justice Kavanaugh from the bench.

“They’re saying, ‘We’ll impeach him!’” Mr. Trump practically bellowed into the microphone here last week, his voice brimming with incredulity and righteous outrage. “Impeach him for what? For what?” The crowd booed on cue.

“Besides that,” Mr. Trump then added slyly, “I have to go first, right?” The crowd laughed.

Perhaps only in the Trump era would the prospect of being impeached become a punch line for the president of the United States. But after almost two years of living under the cloud of a possible impeachment, it may soon cease to be a laughing matter. While Democrats are largely ducking the topic on the campaign trail, few in Washington doubt that impeachment will be on the table if they win the House on Nov. 6.

Republican nominee wants to kick 400,000 Coloradans off health care

By Eric Boehlert - October 12, 2018

Colorado Republican Christine Jensen still thinks attacking health care is a good thing.

Repealing health care access, or providing paid family medical leave — the choices couldn’t be any more clear in the race for the Colorado Senate District 20 this campaign season.

The pivotal contest, which could determine what party controls the Senate next year, features two nominees offering up radically different visions, particularly when it comes to health care.

In the District 20 race, Republican candidate Christine Jensen is still clinging to the idea that Obamacare should be repealed — despite its massive unpopularity.

“Polling shows that health care is a top priority for many Americans, and that Democrats are winning among the segment of the electorate most worried about it,” the Washington Post reported this week. “Republicans have found themselves on the defensive when it comes to an issue they used to champion — eliminating President Obama’s signature domestic achievement.”

GOP attacks veteran who won Bronze Star as not a 'real patriot'

By Eric Boehlert - October 12, 2018

More baseless Republican attacks during the closing weeks of the campaign season.

Republicans are smearing a Democratic candidate for Congress in Minnesota who served two duties in Iraq and earned a Bronze Star in the process, claiming he’s not sufficiently patriotic.

The latest GOP swiftboating campaign is playing out in Minnesota’s 1st Congressional District, where Democrat Dan Feehan is running against Republican Jim Hagedorn to fill a vacated seat.

The Minnesota race is a hotly contested one, and is currently rated a “toss-up.”

The son of a U.S. congressman, Hagedorn has never served in the U.S. military. But that’s not stopping the GOP nominee from waging an ugly attack against Feehan, a U.S. Army veteran — much like Republicans smeared John Kerry’s heroic military service when he ran for president in 2004.
