Trump Administration Gives Lucrative Waiver To Trumps Bank

Source: National Memo

David Sirota

Posted with permission from International Business Times

The Trump administration has waived part of the punishment for five megabanks whose affiliates were convicted and fined for manipulating global interest rates. One of the Trump administration waivers was granted to Deutsche Bank — which is owed at least $130 million by President Donald Trump and his business empire, and has also been fined for its role in a Russian money laundering scheme.

The waivers were issued in a little-noticed announcement published in the Federal Register during the Christmas holiday week. They come less than two years after then-candidate Trump promised “I'm not going to let Wall Street get away with murder.”

Under laws designed to protect retirement savings, financial firms whose affiliates have been convicted of violating securities statutes are effectively barred from the lucrative business of managing those savings. However, that punishment can be avoided if the firms manage to secure a special exemption from the U.S. Department of Labor, allowing them to keep their status as “qualified professional asset managers.”

In late 2016, the Obama administration extended temporary one-year waivers to five banks — Citigroup, JPMorgan, Barclays, UBS and Deutsche Bank. Late last month, the Trump administration issued new, longer waivers for those same banks, granting Citigroup, JPMorgan, and Barclays five-year exemptions. UBS and Deutsche Bank received 3-year exemptions.

Call It The Who Cares About Consumer Safety Commission

Trump Wants Manufacturers’ Representatives Overseeing Product Safety Agency

By Sarah Okeson

Trump is putting people with long histories opposing product safety in charge of the agency responsible for product safety.

He has re-nominated attorney Ann Marie Buerkle, who is abetting the portable generator industry as it kills about 70 people a year, to head the Consumer Product Safety Commission. He has also re-nominated Boston attorney Dana Baiocco to the commission. Baiocco represented Yamaha in lawsuits brought by the families of boys injured while riding all-terrain vehicles. Baiocco’s husband, Andrew Susko, was involved in defending Ikea against three lawsuits filed by families of children who died after the company’s dressers tipped over on top of them.

“The Trump administration is filling the nation’s chief consumer product safety agency with friends of big business whose main aim is to weaken health and safety standards and increase profits,” said attorney Remington A. Gregg of Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group.

Portable generators are one of the deadliest consumer products on the market. A 5,000-watt portable generator gives off as much carbon monoxide an hour as 450 idling mid-sized late-1990s cars. From 2005 to 2016, 849 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning from portable generators. Another 2,800 suffered from carbon-monoxide poisoning but didn’t die.

After a Sweet Deal With Dad, Eric Trump Assembles a Valuable Penthouse

This story was co-published with The Real Deal.

President Donald Trump’s son Eric is preparing to capitalize on a windfall he received from his father during the presidential campaign: He’s combining three luxury Manhattan high-rise apartments, one of which he purchased at a throwaway price from his father, into one potentially lucrative penthouse.

In the spring of 2016, Eric Trump got a great deal from his father. He bought two previously unsold condominium apartments at Trump Parc East for just $350,000 each, about half of the price they had recently been listed for.

Such bargain basement sales are usually treated as gifts by the IRS. But they might not have been taxed that way, tax experts said, because of advantages available only to real estate developers.

Last month, Eric transferred ownership of one of the condos — unit 14G — and two other adjacent apartments he owns into a new entity called 100 CPS Penthouse LLC.

I just wonder if he is going to get "SALT'd, or did he get a waver on state and local taxes and deductions

Fuck this

Maine Sec. Of State Wants Restraining Order For Voter Commission Data

Source: Talking Points Memo

Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, one of four Democrats on President Donald Trump’s disbanded “election integrity” commission, filed for a temporary restraining order Tuesday to preserve his access to information a federal judge previously ruled he was improperly denied, and to deny access to the commission’s findings to the Department of Homeland Security.

Despite a judge’s order in December that the commission — which Trump dissolved earlier this month, citing lawsuits and states’ refusal to hand over voters’ information — must share its records with Dunlap, Justice Department lawyers said last week that Dunlap is not entitled to the records because the commission no longer exists.

Trump started the commission after baselessly claiming that massive voter fraud cost him the popular vote in 2016, and the White House said upon announcing the commission’s dissolution that its findings would be shared with DHS.
