'They want us to be robots': Whole Foods workers fear Amazon's changes

Employees have begun to organize in an attempt to push back on changes made since Amazon acquired the company in 2017

Whole Foods staff are worried that Amazon, the grocery chain’s new owner, is trying to turn them into “robots” and are seeking to set up a union to protect their jobs.

Workers at “America’s healthiest grocery store” say management is trying to cut jobs and reduce wages as they reshape the 38-year-old grocery chain in Amazon’s image.

No one trusts Amazon and there are fears in upper management that Amazon will clean house if sales rates aren’t hit,” said one of the founders of the Whole Worker community in an interview. Staff are reluctant to speak on the record for fear of retaliation and the company has recently started training managers to fight back against union organization.

“They’re squeezing all they can out of the workers. Amazon gives little notice whenever they make changes. When they rolled in the Amazon Prime discount, they only gave stores ten to fourteen days of notice and no extra labor to handle the extra work.”

Whole Foods workers across the United States are beginning to collectively organize in an attempt to push back on changes made to the supermarket chain operations since Amazon acquired the company in August 2017.

On 6 September, a group of workers sent out a letter to Whole Foods stores across the country reaching out to fellow employees to discuss concerns with how Amazon has changed the company as part of the Whole Worker

How Arizona Officials May Obstruct Thousands Of Voters

October 1, 2018 2:42 am / 0 Comments / Campaign 2018, Top News, Voting Rights

Reprinted with permission from AlterNet.

As the close of voter registration approaches in Arizona for the November 6 midterms, it is more than likely that thousands—if not tens of thousands—of registered voters who recently moved inside the state will be walking into a trap on Election Day.

At best, they will face an annoying and inconvenient runaround to find a polling place to cast a ballot that will count. But just as likely many voters who moved to another county will find that their voting status has been suspended for the 2018 election.

The reasons for this likely quagmire are numerous. Some of the blame falls on Arizona residents who moved and didn’t revise their voter registration information. But a larger share of the blame falls on the state, especially two agencies involved in elections, for a series of uneven, bureaucratically opaque, and even legally dubious moves that don’t come down on the side of ensuring that all already-registered voters can participate.

The first culprit is the Arizona Department of Transportation, which runs the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), where 384,000 residents who moved since November 2016 renewed their driver’s licenses online, but did not check a “register to vote” box that would have used their new address to update their voter registration file. In addition to being poorly labeled, by implying that the box only pertained to prospective voters, that opt-in check-off violates Section 5 of the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), which says driver’s license information “shall” be used for voter registration and updates—including new addresses.

The second culprit is the Arizona Secretary of State’s office, which has not gone to bat for the recently relocated residents. Instead, it has hidden behind a don’t-blame-us and legalistic defense, first pointing to MVD’s driver’s license protocols, which they admit violate the NVRA (but say will be fixed in 2019); and then saying the state office lacks legislative authority to use that address change data—even though it is in the state computer systems that it routinely accesses to manage their statewide voter database.

GOP cuts off another House incumbent in deep red state

By Tommy Christopher - October 1, 2018

Republicans are abandoning their own House members ahead of the midterms.

In the past few weeks, Republicans have cut off funding for several incumbent House members in tough races, effectively waving a white flag at the impending blue wave.

On Sunday, The Hill reported that the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) has canceled a nearly $1 million ad buy in support of Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-KS), who won re-election in 2016 by double digits. Democratic challenger Sharice Davids currently leads Yoder in the polls, and the race is rated a “toss-up” by the Cook Political Report.

Meanwhile, Politico reported that the Congressional Leadership Fund, a GOP super PAC, has cut off support for two more incumbents, Michigan Rep. Mike Bishop and Colorado Rep. Mike Coffman. The PAC has canceled over $3 million in planned ad buys between the two.

Just days before that, the NRCC also canceled the remainder of its ads for Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-PA). Rothfus is running against Democratic Rep. Conor Lamb, who pulled off a stunning upset victory in a March special election. Because of redistricting, the two congressman are now running against each other in the new 17th Congressional District.

All four of the incumbents easily won re-election in 2016, some by double digits, but are now locked in close contests with Democratic opponents.

And there might be more bad news for embattled incumbents to come.

“There could be a bunch more,” a former NRCC staffer told The Hill. “If you have a race that’s just not winnable and you have limited resources, you can’t spend just to make somebody feel better.”

Trump team admits climate change will sink Miami, but doesn't care

By Oliver Willis - October 1, 2018

he Trump administration admits that temperatures are rising to a catastrophic level thanks to climate change — but refuses to do anything to help stop it.

The Trump administration is admitting that a catastrophic rise in planetary temperatures will endanger millions of lives around the world — but is still refusing to do anything to prevent it.

In an environmental impact statement released by the administration, the Trump team acknowledged that by the end of the century the planet will warm by seven degrees Fahrenheit, or about 3.5 degrees Celsius.

Such an increase in temperature would be nothing short of a worldwide disaster.

“Extreme heat waves would routinely smother large parts of the globe,” The Washington Post reports. Major American cities like Manhattan and Miami would be underwater. Coral reefs would simply dissolve as the ocean becomes more acidic.

The Trump administration knows that all of this will happen — and yet it is choosing to make the problem even worse.

The impact statement notes that to fight the problem, cuts have to be made in carbon emissions. But it makes the absurd claim that moving away from the use of carbon emitting fossil fuels “is not currently technologically feasible or economically feasible.”

GOP senator snubs assault survivors: 'I know this is enjoyable to y'all'

By Emily Crockett - October 1, 2018

No, it's not 'enjoyable' to have to convince a bunch of conservative men that it's a bad idea to put a likely sexual predator on the Supreme Court.

When two sexual assault survivors confronted Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) in an airport hallway about Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, Corker was polite at first.

But after a minute or so of questions, the mask slipped — and Corker revealed an ugly contempt for women who don’t want him to confirm an alleged sexual predator to the highest court in the land.

“I know y’all are having — I know this is enjoyable for y’all,” Corker said sarcastically, after being asked whether he thought a limited, week-long FBI investigation into new sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh would be “enough” for women and survivors.

Corker’s dismissive comment didn’t go over well.

“It’s not enjoyable,” one of the women replied. “It is not fun for us to tell our stories.”

“This is not enjoyable, this is our lives,” the other said. “I’m a survivor of sexual assault.”

Devin Nunes: Questioning Kavanaugh signals 'collapse of the republic'

By Tommy Christopher - October 1, 2018

As the FBI investigates Kavanaugh, Devin Nunes is saying it's 'dangerous' for senators to even look at evidence against the nominee.

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) took time away from undermining the Russia investigation to run interference for Brett Kavanaugh by saying that Democrats questioning Kavanaugh’s conduct in high school constitutes a threat to the republic.

On Fox News’ “Justice with Judge Jeanine” this weekend, host Jeanine Pirro played some tape of Trump mocking Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) performance at Kavanaugh’s hearing, and asked Nunes for his “take.”

“What you are seeing is the collapse of institutions in this country,” Nunes said.

He added that when “you have senators talking about high school yearbooks, you are watching the collapse of the Senate, a collapse of the republic. It’s a really, really dangerous place we are in.”

Nunes also praised the conspiracy theories that Kavanaugh laid out during his belligerent and unhinged opening statement. In fact, he called Kavanaugh’s rant “amazing.”

Trump team quietly ships kids to tent cities so they can't run away

By Bernie Dennler III - October 1, 2018

Children are being rounded up in the dead of night and sent to a huge Texas tent city, where they have no access to education and few legal protections.

Hundreds of unaccompanied minors have been ripped from well-regulated shelters in the dead of night and dumped into a mostly unregulated desert tent city, according to a new report by The New York Times.

Thanks to the Trump administration’s cruel immigration policies, the population of unaccompanied minor children being detained by the U.S. has skyrocketed fivefold since last year. To accommodate this surge, children are being moved out of licensed shelters and into a large desert encampment in Tornillo, Texas.

At the licensed shelters, which are monitored by state welfare agencies, kids received schooling and even regular legal assistance. But those basic services get stripped away from the children who are moved to Tornillo.

Understandably, many children don’t want to be put in that position. That’s why they are being smuggled away in the dead of night, shelter workers told the Times — to prevent escape attempts.

Trump Cabinet secretary logged 290 hours of mysterious 'private' time

By Eric Boehlert - October 1, 2018

Elaine Chao has taken the equivalent of weeks of vacation in 'private' meetings.

Trump’s Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao has already put in nearly 300 hours of “private” time while serving as a Cabinet member.

The highly unusual practice raises all sorts of questions about how Chao is spending her time as a taxpayer-paid public official.

“In total, Chao clocked more than 290 hours of appointments labeled private — the equivalent of about seven weeks’ vacation — during her first 14 months in President Donald Trump’s Cabinet, based on a review of documents provided under the Freedom of Information Act,” Politico reports.

There’s a suspicion that Chao just isn’t work that hard, as she constantly fills up her Friday afternoon schedules with “private time” meetings. Either that or Chao and her office are purposefully trying to hide from the public what she’s doing as secretary of transportation.

California enacts strongest net neutrality protections in the country as Trump administration files

By JAZMINE ULLOA

SEP 30, 2018 | 7:10 PM

| SACRAMENTO

Gov. Jerry Brown has restored net neutrality rules in California that were repealed under the Trump administration, setting up a legal battle with the federal government over whether states can prevent companies from blocking access to the internet.

The ambitious new law, which was signed by Brown late Sunday and takes effect Jan. 1, prohibits broadband and wireless companies from blocking, throttling or otherwise hindering access to internet content, and from favoring some websites over others by charging for faster speeds. It prompted a quick and aggressive response from Trump administration officials, who have sued to block the regulations.

“Under the Constitution, states do not regulate interstate commerce — the federal government does,” Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions said in a statement issued Sunday. “Once again the California legislature has enacted an extreme and illegal state law attempting to frustrate federal policy.”

Ajit Pai, the Trump-appointed chairman of the Federal Communications Commission who over nine months worked to shelve the federal net neutrality regulations, said he was pleased with the lawsuit, pointing to a federal courts appellate ruling that he said found “state regulation of information services is preempted by federal law.”

Hey Sessions, your ilk doesn't like the Constitution remember, after all you did lie in front of a confirmation hearing, and just for historical reference maybe you should read Nancy Macleans book: Democracy in Chains
THE DEEP HISTORY OF THE RADICAL RIGHT’S STEALTH PLAN FOR AMERICA

Because your ilk have been following James Buchanan model since he created it with his libertarian policies, that states rights over ride federal rights....................
