Panich52's JournalThe Founders Disagree With Ben Carson
Daily Kos
Ben Carson is radically at odds in his view of a Muslim President from the Founders of this nation. This country was founded as a secular nation and the Founders specifically contemplated that a Muslim would be elected President some day.
This is not speculation or inference. The Founders views are explicitly memorialized from the debates that led to the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, the founding document for our government.
First a Little History
The Colonies declared their independence from England in 1776, but the country was not truly formed until the U.S. Constitution was drafted in 1787 and ratified in 1788. The original Constitution was a radical document. The Constitution invoked the "blessings of Liberty" not the "blessings of God," and formed a country based on the authority of "We the People" not the will of God.
The U.S. Constitution was drafted at a Constitutional convention, but it was not adopted until it was voted on separately by each State. The Founders of our country are the men who voted for its adoption in the States.
While transcripts of the debates surrounding the drafting of the Constitution were not preserved (if even made), most of the debates in the State ratification conventions were transcribed, and the public debate in the media of that time is also preserved. These documents reveal that the men who founded our country, who framed the Constitution and voted to ratify its adoption, firmly believed that the U.S. was founded as a secular country.

The alien within: Fetal cells influence maternal health during pregnancy (and long after)
Dramatic research has shown that during pregnancy, cells of the fetus often migrate through the placenta, taking up residence in many areas of the mother's body, where their influence may benefit or undermine maternal health.

WV Editorial debate: EPA's terrible War on Coal and 2 actually rational responses
Charleston Gazette-Mail
Stephen Reed: Eliminating coal an irresponsible idea
The new environmental regulations released weeks ago by the Obama Administrations Environmental Protection Agency are not only a War on Coal, but they also are extraordinarily irresponsible and will affect millions of Americans who rely on the inexpensive electricity coal brings to the table.
The rules are the final, tougher regulations that were first announced by the EPA in 2012 and 2014, so they come as no surprise. Legal challenges are forthcoming from coal states like West Virginia.
Should this final attack by the EPA survive these legal challenges, more of what we already have seen during the Obama years will result: hundreds of coal-fired power plants will be shut down and many new coal plants will not be built. Welcome to Green America.
Just one mammoth problem: what is the existing substitute for coal in Americas energy portfolio?

Charleston Gazette-Mail | Christopher J. Regan: Paying every price in W.Va. coal communities
John Kennedy, in his inaugural address, said that America would pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, or oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty. He need not have said this in West Virginia. West Virginia had already done that.
. ...
Even so, West Virginia has never been rich. As ton after ton of coal came out of the earth to fuel America, and to save Europe from fascism and Nazism, the working people of West Virginia never profiteered never made more than a bare living on the hard work of mining coal and working steel. The great fortunes made in timber and coal were never widely shared. Even at the height of the industry (in terms of employment), more than 50 years ago, poverty in West Virginias coalfields was a scandal, that President Kennedy himself brought to the nations attention, and worked to end, before his assassination.
For more than 150 years, West Virginia has done her part, to build, to preserve, and to defend America. Come to find out its not enough. Even more is being asked of our state, much of it on behalf of people who dont live here.
. ...
One thing that has to be recognized as we think our way through these changes is this: The country owes a literal and moral debt to our coalfield communities. West Virginia has done its part, and others have reaped the benefits, for a long, long time that debt must be repaid.
Were not talking about companies, owners and executives. West Virginia has minted a thousand millionaires in coal. No one owes them a thing. It remains a great scandal that executives, bankers and owners are trying to renege on retirement benefits and health benefits that coal miners were promised. Its sickening to see millions, and tens of millions, taken by suits while working families suffer for want of the modest sums they worked hard to earn.
. ...
We are not talking about a handout, any more than the retirements miners worked for and were promised are a handout. Were talking about fair treatment and just compensation an even playing field, and a chance to make it to the future. There are billions of dollars to be had to re-tool, re-train, and re-vitalize our state and West Virginia must seize them.

Gazette editorial: Obamas plan to help coal communities
Several coal corporations, including Alpha Natural Resources and Patriot Coal have filed for bankruptcy in recent weeks. Value of their stocks and bonds sank into the cellar. Numerous mines have closed, and thousands of miners have been laid off. Painful suffering is felt in Southern West Virginia coal counties, exacerbating existing problems of poverty and drug addiction.
Most of this slump is attributable to a flood of cheap natural gas, to depletion of good Appalachian coal seams, high company debt and the fall of coal prices. Yet West Virginia leaders blame it all on federal pollution controls and a supposed war on coal. They offer nothing to help devastated coal communities.
In contrast, the Obama administration proposes a wide array of efforts to rescue hard-hit coal towns. The White House 2016 budget contains a Power Plus Plan that would:
. ...
All this sounds like the only sensible plan to resuscitate stricken counties. Too many West Virginia leaders, who dont want to acknowledge to voters the long-predicted decline in coal jobs, are criticizing Obamas plans instead of embracing them. Count the elected leaders who urge generation after generation to hitch their wagons to coal, even while coal companies continue to get out of pension, health care and pollution obligations in bankruptcy court.
Frustrated, the president complained about coal-state resistance:
They will claim this is a war on coal to scare up votes, even as they ignore my plan to actually invest in revitalizing coal country and supporting health care and retirement for coal miners and their families, and retraining those workers for better-paying jobs and healthier jobs.

I would like feedback from those on the 'front lines' of this matter. As a Caucasian, my perspective can only be 'support staff' so I'd like insight from those with a more personal connection as to whether shutting down political rallies helps or hinders the message.
My initial reaction is that completely shouting down rallies, etc is a bit too extreme, but some comnentators have suggested the tactic has succeeded in getting face-to-face meetings w/ Dem candidates, therefore proving effectiveness. If true, why not harass Repubs as well?
'So Long, Ladies,’ Says GOP
National Memo
Its nice to already know the Republicans strategy as they lurch toward the long and bumpy road to someone elses presidency. Removes the mystery.
Their new mantra, in GOP-speak: So long, ladies.
Ill give them this: Theyre no longer pretending to care about us. Yay for them for ending that charade. They dont want us, and apparently theyve decided they dont need us. Or, as Jeb Bush put it on Tuesday: Im not sure we need half a billion dollars for womens health issues.
. ...
Last month, a fake group with a fake name released hidden-camera video it claimed showed Planned Parenthood illegally selling tissue from aborted fetuses. This was a lie. Nonetheless, Republicans heralded it as their version of proof that (a) women cannot be trusted to make decisions about their own health care, (b) Planned Parenthood cue Star Wars Imperial March is the Evil Empire and (c) this is what happens when you give women the vote.
. ...
(Katha Pollit)-
As long as women were firmly ensconced in the family as wives and mothers with few rights and little social power, she writes, abortion was legal or tolerated as a way to save unmarried daughters from shame, limit family size, and protect exhausted mothers from the rigors of yet more pregnancies and births.
But once middle-class white women began to emancipate themselves and get involved in public and political life
abortion took on its modern meaning of self-determination and independence and active decision making.

Where Is The Shame That The World Sees Americans As Racist And Extremists?

Where Is The Shame That The World Sees Americans As Racist And Extremists?
By: Rmuse
One can hardly dispute the fact that after World War II and into the late 1970s, America was the envy of the world. In fact, Republican demigod Ronald Reagan used a biblical phrase, shining city on a hill to describe Americas appeal to the rest of the world; before he unleashed extremist Hell on the nation. It is ironic Reagan is forever linked to that phrase because it was his administrations policies and his political party that transformed America into what it is today; a mean spirited and violent haven for the greedy rich, the religious, and the hate-filled conservative movement.
Everything bad about America that the rest of the world sees increasing, and Americans feel, is purely Republican and it is truly pathetic that instead of despair and shame for creating what this country has become, the right wing and the religious thrive on what the world knows is bad about America; it is a racist, violent and religious extremist nation that conservatives consider exceptional.
Most people have one relative they keep their distance from to avoid being humiliated, but it is impossible for Americans to distance themselves from, or avoid, this countrys national embarrassment any longer. Republicans will not go away and they are getting louder, more hateful, more extreme, more racist, and more violent as their base cheers wildly and the world watches in stunned amazement. It is a sad commentary that every day there is a new, and more extreme, source of embarrassment for a so-called exceptional nation, and it is a wonder that any civilized person would ever want to come to a country full of hateful, greedy, and religious racists.
. ...
In Britain, a month after the Charleston massacre, a leading newspaper headline read, Still A Racist Nation: American Bigotry On Full Display. The story documented the Ku Klux Klan and white supremacists protesting to preserved their cherished symbol of racism, the Confederate battle flag. One of the racists, an imperial wizard in the Trinity White Knights KKK chapter, boasted that he drove hundreds of miles from Kentucky or as he put it, Klantucky, to defend white supremacy, and he echoed a sentiment popular among Americas bigots and evangelical extremists; Theyre taking our heritage from us. Theyre taking the freedom out of America.
. ...
...conservatives and Republicans are leading a dangerous and hate-filled movement that cannot exist without being at war against everyone who is not religious, not hateful, not greedy and not racist; both domestically and internationally.
