Since his big upset in Michigan last week, Bernie Sanders has gained enormous ground in Tuesday night’s three Midwest primaries. How much ground, you ask? In Illinois, Sanders went from trailing Hillary Clinton by 42 points in a poll last week, to leading the former secretary of State by two points in one released Sunday. Similarly, the democratic socialist has cut what was once a 30-point Clinton lead in Ohio to a deficit of single digits. And in Missouri, the latest PPP poll, released Monday, shows Sanders one point ahead of the Democratic front-runner.... any Sanders win would be significant because it would give him extra momentum going into a three-week stretch of the primary calendar that looks especially favorable for him. According to FiveThirtyEight’s projections, Sanders is likely to win seven of the eight nominating contests between March 16 and April 9. ... In the 24 hours after Michigan, the Sanders campaign raked in $5 million. Any victory tonight would probably produce a similar cash infusion.... But to the extent that the senator’s candidacy is about shifting America’s political conversation leftward, the more delegates he amasses, the stronger the mandate he and his supporters will have to push the Democratic Party in the direction of social democracy.

In the month of February alone, the Sanders campaign raised some $42 million, more than the approximately $30 million raised by rival Hillary Clinton's campaign during that month and more than the amount of money raised by any Republican presidential campaign in February.... Day after day, week after week, month after month, his small donors have come through with a generosity of spirit and an idealism of purpose to build a better future for American democracy.
Having spent a career working for and with Democratic leaders and writing columns published in the major media I am a charter member of some wing of the political establishment — even though I have written in columns and said on television that, in my view, this establishment has become corrupted by the stench of dirty money and the stain of special interests.... Yet even my readers who are the most cynical about and politically depressed by the corruption of the system should be be astonished and amazed by the potential lasting impact for good that the Sanders campaign has now brought within reach.... Sanders Sees Opening Despite Clinton's Delegate Lead

“This is about as close as it can be for us to do well in these three states,” Sanders’ campaign manager told backers, referring to poll results in Ohio, Illinois and Missouri, where the independent senator thinks he has the best chances to best Clinton.... Citing polls Monday, Campaign Manager Jeff Weaver told supporters the senator is running neck-and-neck with Clinton in Missouri, three percentage points ahead in Illinois, and five points ahead in Ohio. ... In the last week, the candidates pummeled each other on issues of trust and judgment during rallies, in campaign ads and at televised town-hall events. Since last year, Sanders has pulled Clinton increasingly to the left .... The two Democratic aspirants focused heavily this month on policies of concern to many blue-collar, Midwestern voters, who worry about jobs and the economy, as well as rising college tuition costs, health insurance, the auto and coal industries, and the best ways to stand up to competition from China.
Sanders faults Clinton for backing what he calls “disastrous” international trade pacts, which he believes result in lower wages and corporate moves abroad. In response, Clinton assures voters she wants to see changes in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, negotiated by the Obama administration, before she can embrace the 12-nation pact she helped forge as secretary of state.... Sanders also objects to what he suggests are Clinton’s cozy ties to New York financial firms and Wall Street donors. He continues to point to six-figure speaking fees she earned from New York financial firms, and he’s called on Clinton numerous times to release transcripts of her speeches, which she has declined to do unless all candidates follow suit.... States with large delegate prizes ahead include Washington on March 26 (101); New York on April 19 (247); Pennsylvania on April 26 (189), and California (475) and New Jersey (126), both on June 7.
“It’s just so damn close,” the Sanders campaign argued Monday.

Hillary Clinton, with her massive fundraising, her Democratic Party insider status, the Wall Street speeches bringing more cash, the Clinton Foundation clout, the connections foreign and domestic... is the political embodiment of the establishment. And that spells serious trouble for her, because the American people are in an insurgent mood, fueled by the holes in their bank accounts, all those jobs Bill Clinton sent overseas with his support of NAFTA, and the rifts in what we once called the common culture. It spreads across class lines like fire in a dry riverbed. It won't stop until the weeds are gone.... But the Democrat... turnout in primaries is low. ... She has other problems, including the consensus from primary exit polls that she's considered to be a liar. Young women don't like her much, perhaps because Clinton's old feminist allies tried to shame them into submission. Now Hillary is thought of as some angry grandmother.
She seems overly scripted, stuffy, tired, as if every word she speaks has been poll-tested and run past criminal lawyers. ... Even Democrats who aren't excited by Clinton say that she deserves the nomination.... But Clint Eastwood explained all you need to know about the deserving to a dying Gene Hackman in the Oscar-winning western "Unforgiven." Hackman, shot and on the ground, said he didn't deserve to go that way.
"Deserve's got nothin' to do with it," Eastwood told him.... Deserves have nothing to do with power politics. Timing is everything. And I don't see Hillary winning, because she's the wrong candidate at the wrong time.
Not a fan, but I cannot pass up a good quote from "Unforgiven."

YouGov poll in Illinois - Sanders +2 (48% to 46%) in a state where Hillary has a 42% lead a week ago according to Research America Inc.Public Policy Polling in Missouri - Sanders +1 (47% to 46%) in a state where Hillary has a 28% lead according to PPP's prior Missouri poll.
Baldwin Wallace University poll in Ohio - Sanders +1 (45% to 44%) in a state where Hillary had a 30% lead a week ago according to Opinion Research Corporation.
This trend in the polling is staggering!
Obviously, there are other polls out there (for example, the McKeon & Associates poll in Illinois shows Hillary up 1% at 31% to 30%; RABA Research poll in Missouri shows Hillary up 4% at 44% to 40%; both the Public Policy Polling and Quinnipiac show Hillary up 5% (46% to 41% and 51% to 46%, respectively), but Sanders has been smashing his polling numbers when the real votes are counted and Hillary has been falling far short of her polling-based expectations.

New poll: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders too close to call in Missouri

A new poll on the eve of the Missouri Democratic presidential primary shows the race ... stands at 47-46 percent with Hillary Clinton holding the slight advantage over Bernie Sanders.... Missouri’s primary Tuesday is open, meaning that any Missourian can vote in it, including independents.
Sanders fares far better among that group of voters, leading by a sizable 62-23 percent, PPP said.
Among Republicans, Sanders led 66-23 percent.
So who’s leading heading into Tuesday? Flip that coin in your pocket.

Actually, the Kansas City Star get's the poll backwards - it is Sanders who leads Hillary by 1% (47% to 46%).
Why Hillary Needs Sanders to Drop Out of the Race (and Sanders Has No Need for Hillary to Drop Out)
Hillary has only two responses to Sanders.
Either Hillary lies about Sanders' record:
Or Hillary molds her flexible "core values" to become more and more like Sanders (as brilliantly parodied by SNL):
This second option is interfering with Hillary's election strategy because she is planning to swing hard right in the general election after she plans to get the nomination based on empty promises to the left, and the Sanders campaign is fucking with the timing of Hillary's about face.
Sanders does not have a similar problem because he's going to campaign in the general election on the exact same platform he's using to win the nomination.
This -- as much as anything -- is a key difference between the two campaigns.
