US accuses Russia of harassing diplomats

Source: CNN

Updated 8:20 PM ET, Mon June 27, 2016
By Elise Labott, CNN

Washington (CNN) Washington has delivered high-level complaints to Moscow about accusations of increasing intimidation of American diplomats in Russia, the State Department said on Monday.

Secretary of State John Kerry last discussed the matter with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 24, according to State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau.

"We see an increase and we take it seriously," she told reporters at a press briefing.

Trudeau said that harassment of diplomats by Russian security agents and traffic police had been an issue over the past two years but did not detail any incidents nor why Kerry brought up the matter with Putin.

Other Western embassies had reported the same behavior toward their diplomats stationed in Moscow, Trudeau added.

Hardly anybody wants to speak at Trump's convention

Source: Politico

A slot at the GOP convention used to be a career-maker — a chance to make your name on the big stage and to catch the eye of the Republican donors and activists who make or break campaigns.

In the year of Trump: Not so much.

With the convention less than a month away, POLITICO contacted more than 50 prominent governors, senators, and House members to gauge their interest in speaking. Only a few said they were open to it — and everyone else said they either weren’t planning on it, didn’t want to, weren’t going to Cleveland at all, or simply didn’t respond.

“I am not attending,” said South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, who is overseeing the high-profile congressional Republican investigation into Hillary Clinton’s handling of the attacks on Benghazi. Gowdy, who said he was taking his family to the beach instead, hasn’t gone to conventions in the past and didn’t plan to now. “I’m not,” said South Carolina Rep. Mark Sanford, a former two-term governor. “But hope you have a good Thursday!” “Don’t know,” said Sean Duffy, a reality TV star-turned-Wisconsin congressman, “I haven’t thought about it.” Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo: "I won't be there.”

The widespread lack of interest, Republicans say, boils down to one thing: the growing consensus that it’s best to steer clear of Trump.

Brexit: Petition calling for second EU vote was created by Leave backer

Source: CNN

Updated 9:02 PM ET, Sun June 26, 2016

London (CNN) An online petition signed by more than 3.5 million people calling for a second referendum on whether Britain should leave the EU was started by a Leave campaigner who says it has been "hijacked" by unhappy Remain voters.

The petition, which has attracted millions of signatures in the wake of Britain's shock vote to leave the European Union last Thursday, calls for a second referendum on the issue if the result is less than decisive.

Another referendum should be held, it says, "if the remain or leave vote is less than 60 percent based a turnout less than 75 percent." In a startling result, the Leave campaign won Thursday's referendum with 52% of the vote, with 72% of voters turning out.

Disappointed voters have flocked to sign the petition in the wake of the vote, crashing the official UK government website on at least one occasion and generating more signatures than on any other petition on the site.

But the surge in interest has prompted its creator, William Oliver Healey, to speak out, saying that he in fact he had actively supported the Leave campaign, and had created the petition "with the intention of making it harder for 'remain' to further shackle us to the EU."

Healey claims he created the petition before the vote, when it looked as though Remain was going to win. At any rate, it appears that we're not the only country having a fucked-up political year!

Iraqi commander: Fallujah 'fully liberated' from IS

Source: Associated Press

Jun. 26, 2016 4:26 AM EDT

BAGHDAD (AP) — A senior Iraqi commander has declared the city of Fallujah "fully liberated" from Islamic State group militants after a more than monthlong military operation.

The head of the counterterrorism forces in the operation, Lt. Gen. Abdul-Wahad al-Saadi, told The Associated Press that on Sunday his troops entered the northwestern al-Julan neighborhood, which was the last area still under IS control.

Al-Saadi says the operation, which began late May, "is done and the city is fully liberated."

Fallujah has been under the control of Islamic State militants since January 2014.

2. I'm a tad skeptical about this report.
