Regarding Gamestop, are we in for an economic crash even worse than 2008?

I don't really understand the stock market that well, but is this true? Is Reddit and 4chan going to end up destroying the economy?

California health care worker dies after second dose of COVID vaccine, investigations underway

Tim Zook’s last post on Facebook brimmed with optimism. “Never been so excited to get a shot before,” he wrote on Jan. 5, above a photo of the Band-Aid on his arm and his COVID-19 vaccination card. “I am now fully vaccinated after receiving my 2nd Pfizer dose.”

Shortly after midnight on Jan. 7, the hospital called. Zook was in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator to help him breathe. But his blood pressure soon dropped and he was transferred to UC Irvine Medical Center. “On Friday I get a call, ‘His kidneys are failing. He needs to be on dialysis. If not, he could die — but there’s also a chance he might have a heart attack or stroke on dialysis because his blood pressure is so low,’ ” Rochelle Zook said.

By 4 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, Zook had gone “code blue” twice and was snatched back from the brink of death. There was a third code blue in the afternoon. “They said if he went code blue a fourth time, he’d have brain damage and be a vegetable if he survives,” Rochelle Zook said.

Later that day, Tim Zook died.

Seems like Newsom is reacting to the recall effort against him which is now gaining real momentum. Is it enough to save him at this point? There are so many "RECALL NEWSOM" signs in my city now.

New York could become the first state to ban bulletproof vests

Albany, New York – A New York lawmaker has authored a bill that would confiscate body armor from citizens and make it illegal to buy the protective gear in the state.

Currently, there is a ban on the use of bulletproof vests while carrying out a “violent felony offense.”

If passed, New York would become the first state to ban the purchase or possession of ballistic vests for citizens.

The bill from assembly member Jonathan G. Jacobson (D.) would outlaw the sale and possession of body armor in the state of New York. The bill would require residents who own a bulletproof vest to turn them over to police within 15 days of the bill becoming law.

The Washington Free Beacon reports that Second Amendment advocates are speaking out against the proposed law. The Firearms Policy Coalition created the website BodyArmorBan.com in order to mobilize against the proposal. The group said in a message on the site that Jacobson’s bill “deprives New Yorkers of their right to passive defense by instituting a confiscatory ban on body armor.”

The Firearms Policy Coalition noted the bill provides an exception for police officers and questioned why normal citizens should not be allowed the same protections.

“As is tradition, police are exempt from this new restraint on the right to keep and bear arms,” the group said on its website.

In the aftermath of the summer violence in the state and in particular New York City, Bulletproof vest sales have soared with one New York City vendor reporting that sales have increased 80% from 2019.

Manchin on proposed round of $2K checks: 'Absolutely not'

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) on Friday voiced firm opposition to providing $2,000 stimulus checks, putting the moderate lawmaker at odds with President-elect Joe Biden, congressional Democrats and even some Republicans.

“Absolutely not. No,” Manchin told The Washington Post in an interview published Friday. “Getting people vaccinated, that’s job No. 1.”

“How is the money that we invest now going to help us best to get jobs back and get people employed? And I can’t tell you that sending another check out is gonna do that to a person that’s already got a check,” he said.

Manchin in a tweet, later said if a new round of checks go out, they should be targeted to ensure they go to those in need.

Apple and Google face pressure to deplatform Parler over calls to violence

Apple and Google are facing new pressure to deplatform Parler, a social network founded as a less moderated and more conservative-friendly alternative to Facebook and Twitter. Activist group Sleeping Giants has called on both companies to ban Parler from their app stores in response to posts calling for violence against elected officials.

As evidence, the group posted screenshots of Parler posts calling for Vice President Mike Pence to face a firing squad and encouraging “American Patriots” to return to the capital on January 19th “carrying Our weapons.”

The group points out that both Google and Apple have clear rules against violent threats and moderation of content. Apple’s App Store says apps must have “a method for filtering objectionable material from being posted” and “a mechanism to report offensive content.” Google’s Play Store bars apps that “depict or facilitate gratuitous violence or other dangerous activities,” and that “we don’t allow apps that contain or facilitate threats, harassment, or bullying.”

Neither Apple nor Google replied to requests for comment from The Verge. Parler also did not reply to a request for comment.

Parler saw its numbers skyrocket after Twitter and Facebook tightened their moderation, with conservative protesters finding a home among like-minded users. In a Thursday interview with Kara Swisher on the Sway podcast, Parler CEO John Matze said any posts on the site indicating Wednesday’s riots were “illegally organized and against the law” would have been removed. “But I don’t feel responsible for any of this and neither should the platform, considering we’re a neutral town square that just adheres to the law,” he said.

The “Stop the Steal” campaign challenging President Trump’s loss gained particular momentum among Parler users, as well as other conspiracy theories around the election that had been debunked elsewhere. In the wake of the Capitol raid, researchers have circulated dozens of posts on Parler that encouraged violence leading up to the attack on the Capitol. “Chloroform. Silencers. SHARP knives & keep walking,” reads one, “take zip ties with you, sneak up on them like ninjas and zip tie their hands and feet,” reads another, to which someone replied: “around their neck, can’t get it off in time, they die.”

On Thursday evening, the site had posts from Trump supporters questioning whether his concession speech was a deepfake.
