Media's getting played by Trump again

Like in 2016 and 2020 the cable news networks are falling for Trump's online trolling yet again.

For 7 years they've been Trump's stenographers. He'll do or tweet something horrific, the media will repeat it verbatim, ask the Republicans to condemn him (LOL) and the scandal will be quickly forgotten.
And when it does die down Trump will immediately say or do something even more obnoxious and the pattern repeats.

Meanwhile Trump keeps his name in the headlines, dominates the news cycle and his control over the Republican party only gets stronger.

That's because the media hasn't figured out its the Republican VOTERS who won't abandon Trump. They keep nominating him to be their President no matter how racist, misogynistic and authoritarian he becomes.

I think they should stop taking the bait. Trump shouldn't be able to tweet (or truth) something while he's on the toilet and that suddenly become the most important story of the day.

Do better media.

Bottom line on the Repugs investigations

Bottom line on all the investigations House Republicans have planned... who cares?

- They can't prosecute anybody criminally.
- They've shown that congressional subpoenas mean nothing and can be stonewalled using the courts..
' They can impeach anyone they want but the Senate will never convict.

The Republican Senate investigated Hunter Biden in 2020 and found nothing to connect his business mistakes to Joe Biden. If they had you better believe they would have made it public before the election and Attorney General Barr would have prosecuted the case.

The biggest challenge in the next 2 years is going to be for the media. Will they cover these endless Republican circus hearings as actual news or ignore them?

Trump's been psychotic since he caught Covid

October 2020 is when Trump officially jumped the shark and went from mentally unstable to completely psychotic. Ever since his near death experience with Covid he's been more delusional and desperate than ever before.

Who knows why this is. Guessing he was embarrassed he caught Covid and that his base found out he wasn't superhuman. Probably caused a psychotic break in his already scattered brain.

Either way for the past 2 years he's been completely divorced from reality. Outside of his equally delusional base most Americans find him repulsive and love voting against him and his minions every election.

Of course his malignant narcissistic personality can't accept that the majority of planet earth thinks he's a loser and a clown so he's going to continue to try to stay relevant. It would be sad to watch if he wasn't so cruel and dangerous. Thankfully now he doesn't have access to nuclear weapons so we can just sit back and enjoy the trainwreck.

My guilty pleasure is watching Trump and his MAGA movement implode. Hopefully his latest Presidential run goes off the rails fast.

Can the Senate continue the 1/6 hearings?

Heard Jill Wine Banks say on MSNBC that the January 6th select committee could just transfer their ongoing investigation to the Democratic controlled Senate. That's if Republicans take back the house and shut the hearings down.

If that's possible it would be another motivator to win the Georgia seat. With a
51-49 Senate we could finish whatever work the 1/6 committee doesn't complete before January. Maybe Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger help guide the transition as advisors.

Seems really important that all the hard work
the committee has done the past year doesn't go to waste. Especially if the orange lunatic runs for President again.

Nothing matters except the 2 weeks before an election

What's absolutely maddening about how the media covers politics is that they obsess year round about polls trying to predict who's going to win the midterms and Presidency. In 2016 and 2020 Democrats had a huge advantage in the polls up until a few weeks before people actually started voting. And then our lead evaporates. Why is that?

My feeling: The majority of Americans don't pay attention to politics and don't think about elections at all until a few weeks before they either decide to vote or don't vote. Basically they respond to the bombardment of political ads and yard signs reminding them "vote in November" because who can miss them?

Invevitably in the end Republicans always "come home" and rally around whatever candidate has an R next to their name on the ballot. No matter how crazy he or she is they'll still vote for them. Because they've "always voted Republican."

And Democrats get killed in the final weeks before an election because of the avalance of negative ads directed at them. Thanks for Citizens United dark money superpacs and millionaires can flood the airwaves with ads portaying Democrats as socialists who want to "defund the police, open the borders and indoctrinate your kids." Back that up with 24 hour news networks that tells viewers how horrible things are going in America and it's not surprising the polls tighten during the days before the election.

Honestly election coverage is pointless until 2 to 3 weeks before people actually vote. There's a reason why in some countries politicians aren't allowed to campaign or run ads until a few months before the election.

And for those that say the Democrats need to message better. How are we supposed to compete with a barrage dishonest attack ads, right wing media, gerrymandering and the electoral college? If we pass more legislation that helps improve people's lives will that do the trick? Doesn't seem to make a difference what we do in office.

At this point with all the obstacles in our way it's a miracle we win any election. Thankfully the record early voting turnout shows we're not giving up or losing hope even if the media wants us to throw in the towel because of negative polling.

American politics is exhausting!

What polls do you trust the most?

I've seen 17 different polls with 17 different forecasts about the midterm elections. Even the cable news networks seem to be chasing their own tails trying to get their predictions right.

Hard to know which to believe. Since their track record in 2016 and 2020 wasn't so great.

Do you have a primary poll you follow?

How most Americans view their government

IMHO it seems most Americans think the government should both
A. Stay out of their lives and
B. Fix every problem in the country.

They talk about wanting limited government but also expect the government to be there when they need it.

However they aren't willing to make personal sacrifices in order to make that happen. Meaning..
A. Paying taxes is unfair
B. Wearing a mask and getting vaccinated is unfair.
C. Showing up to vote every election is too much trouble.
D. Paying a few dollars more for groceries and gas in a post-pandemic world economy is unacceptable.

Most Americans simply want it both ways.
They want a functioning government that will keep the economy strong, keep us out of wars and act as a safety net if they become unable to support themselves.

But they also want to pay no taxes, cut funding for entitlements and find a President who will say and do things things that please everyone and return America to some past golden age.

That's why our current trajectory is so unsustainable. Americans are in a love- hate relationship with our democratic form of government. They take for granted it will always be there no matter what even if they don't participate in saving it.

So when Americans say the government should stay out of their lives and wallets but also lower inflation, decrease gas prices, fix the border and eliminate crime they're setting up their elected officials to fail. That disconnect is tragic.

National media turns its failure into clickbait

[link:https://presswatchers.org/2022/10/national-media-turns-its-failure-into-clickbait-headlines-about-apathy/|

Best op-ed I've read about the naive way the mainstream media is framing the midterm elections and how they are letting down the public. This piece would have made Eric Boehlert proud.

National media turns its failure into clickbait headlines about apathy
By Dan Froomkin

If, in fact, Americans care more about a transitory bout of inflation than the potentially permanent loss of majority rule in this country, that is an absolute tragedy, and a travesty, and a devastating verdict on the failure of the national media to fully convey the threat of an ascendant extremist right-wing Christian nationalist party that proudly refuses to accept elections they don’t win outright.

It is not the stuff of a glib paragraph atop a story about a new poll.

If, in fact, Americans are in a panic about the economy and blaming Joe Biden and Democrats, then that that is a terrible shame, and once again a failure of the national media to fully explain the positive economic news and inflation’s roots in intractable international conditions and the extraordinary pricing power of monopolistic corporations.

It is not the stuff of a glib clause in a story about a new poll.

And if, in fact, Americans think Republicans could do a better job of the economy, then they have been successfully conned by a bunch of certified grifters, in large part because the national media has utterly failed to report the simple fact that the GOP has no actual plan to fight inflation. There is no legitimate reason to leave that utterly specious, self-defeating fantasy conclusion out there, unrebutted, in a story about a new poll.

When Republicans complain about deficits LOL

Noticed in most debates when Republicans are asked what they'll do about inflation they all say "lower the deficit and stop out of control government spending." That's some epic gaslighting.

We all know what Republicans mean by lowering government spending: making cuts to entitlements.

And we all know the Trump tax cuts blew up the deficit and Biden has actually decreased the deficit.

It's amazing Republicans can make these claims in debates with a straight face. The minute they get back in power they'll stop caring about the debt and pass more tax cuts.

Democrats really have to explain this better to voters.

He's never going away is he?

Trump is never, ever going away is he?

He's always going to be in the news, holding hate rallies, threatening people on social media and making millions off lying to his supporters

And let's be honest. He's never, ever going to be indicted or spend a minute in jail. Look at how crazy his cult reacted to a simple FBI search of his home. Think any prosecutor is going to dare put Trump on trial if it's going to unleash his mob of other well armed domestic terrorists who want to burn the country down?

And he's never going to stop running for President or concede when he loses (again). And if the apocalypse happens and he somehow manages to win in 2024 he's never, ever leaving the White House again voluntarily.

At this point the only thing that can stop Donald Trump is Donald Trump. Maybe he'll suddenly have a spiritual awakening and realize there's more to life than practicing the seven deadly sins every day. But at his age I doubt he's capable of changing who he is. Unfortunately he's definitely changed America for the worse and isn't done yet.
