The 25th Amendment Proves Why Trump's Mental Health Matters

The 25th Amendment is the ultimate constitutional "check" — a corrective mechanism for an American president who is physically or psychologically unable to lead. Most important, it grants legal authority to those closest to power — first, the vice president and Cabinet members, then members of Congress — to stage an intervention. At the very least, these individuals are authorized to call a temporary timeout if the president is judged unfit to govern.

Is America today in need of such an unprecedented intervention?

The amendment, ratified in 1967 after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, was constructed to assure a smooth transition when a president becomes incapable of leadership. (Its vague wording leaves room for both physical and psychological justifications.) By the 1960s, the dangers of an incapacitated president were far greater than at the founding of our country. But arguably, the stakes have only gotten higher. With tensions flaring around the globe, there can be no doubt as to the fitness of the man or woman in possession of U.S. nuclear codes.

Pundits and politicians alike have called for the amendment’s implementation over the past few months. But it is both practically and philosophically a tool of last resort. Unlike impeachment, which is controlled solely by Congress, the 25th Amendment requires action by the majority of the president's Cabinet and potentially Congress. This means that even in today’s polarized climate, partisan removal is unlikely. In addition, the bar for diagnosing mental health conditions is quite high.

Roy Moore: Kneeling During Anthem Is Against the Law

Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore claims that professional athletes kneeling during the national anthem is against the law. In an interview with TIME, published Wednesday, the far-right Republican argued that athletes protesting police brutality violate a section of the U.S. code on conduct while the national anthem is playing. “It’s against the law, you know that?” the former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice. “It was a act of Congress that every man stand and put their hand over their heart. That’s the law.” He added: “If they didn’t have it in there, it would just be tradition. But this is law. If we disobey this, what else are we going to disobey?” The candidate’s comments came without any acknowledgement of his own history with the law: Moore was suspended in 2016 for the remainder of his term after ordering Alabama judges to not enforce the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling—the law of the land—on same-sex marriage.

Police in This City Are About to Start Using Russian Hoverbikes

Dubai police are ushering in the Star Wars era with the unveiling of quadcopter-style hoverbikes to its fleet.

The police force of the Gulf emirate announced at the Gitex Technology Week conference that they’ll soon have officers fighting crime from the sky on electric hoverbikes capable of speeds of up to 43 miles (75 kilometres) per hour.

The Scorpion hoverbike, exhibited at the biggest technology expo in the gulf region and built by a Russian company called Hoversurf, has been likened to a ridable drone, and is capable of flying with or without a pilot. Though the bike won’t fly higher than 20 feet, the Dubai police say that the hoverbike “will be deployed as a first-responder vehicle to get into hard-to-reach places where larger vehicles can’t go”, as per Ride Apart.

Kaepernick's attorney on NFL collusion case: We will have a smoking gun

(CNN)Colin Kaepernick's attorney Mark Geragos said Tuesday he has a "high degree of confidence" that he will be able to prove National Football League team owners colluded to keep Kaepernick from being signed.

"I am going to predict right now that we will have a smoking gun," Geragos told CNN's Anderson Cooper on "AC360." "There are people who are not going to get into an arbitration proceeding and they are not going to lie. They are not going to lie. They are going to tell the truth and they're going to say what happened. They were told no, you're not going to hire him."

Kaepernick, who is still a free agent, first took a knee during the singing of the National Anthem before a 2016 preseason game. He said he knelt to protest the treatment of black Americans, particularly by police.

The Vietnam War - The Trump Experience

Thank God white people populated America

Market doomsayer Marc "Dr. Doom" Faber has launched a racially charged diatribe in his latest newsletter, alleging that the U.S. is great primarily because it is ruled by white people.

The eccentric Gloom, Boom & Doom report author, who often speaks on CNBC and other financial media, generally forecasting some type of market downturn, focused his latest comments on the racial conflicts happening around the country.

"And thank God white people populated America, and not the blacks. Otherwise, the US would look like Zimbabwe, which it might look like one day anyway, but at least America enjoyed 200 years in the economic and political sun under a white majority," he wrote.

"I am not a racist, but the reality — no matter how politically incorrect — needs to be spelled out."

CNBC needs to keep this asshole off the air. I intend to urge them to.

Pope Francis Should Reject Callista Gingrich

as Ambassador (for Adultery)

The pontiff rejected a French ambassador just because he was gay; surely, he should reject Trump's pick for her sins.

When President Donald Trump visited Rome in May, Twitter and Facebook lit up. Many delighted in headlines and commentary that suggested that when Trump visited the Vatican, the Pope schooled him the way a disappointed headmaster deals with a badly behaved remedial student. Indeed, much in Trump’s agenda (to say nothing of his character) is at odds with Pope Francis’s touchstone priorities: lifting up the poor and hungry, tackling climate change and serving as responsible custodians of a fragile planet, showing compassion for refugees and respect for their human dignity. These purposes have inspired American Catholics and non-Catholics alike making the Pope far more popular than Trump himself in the United States.
