FL 2017: Emotional support squirrels, a lawyers flaming pants and other weird news
How weird was the news out of Florida this year? So weird that the popular @_FloridaMan Twitter account apparently gave up trying to keep up with it all in mid-October. He hasnt tweeted anything to his 387,000 followers since two weeks before Halloween.
But dont worry. Floridas largest newspaper has not slacked off on tracking all the wacky and wild news this year. As expected, 2017 produced a bumper crop of the bizarre.

How Did Bob Corker Go from Dead Broke to $69M Net Worth During 11 Years in U.S. Senate?
How do you increase your net worth by 69 million dollars while youre working full-time as a Senator? Thats the question Rolling Stone reporter Matt Taibbi asked about Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) on Friday.
Neither Taibbi nor Rolling Stone are fans of Corker (or of President Trump, Republicans, or conservatism in general). And Rolling Stone has had problems of its own, recently, as has Taibbi.
Nonetheless, Taibbi puts a fine point on what many political watchers across the Volunteer State have been asking for years.
Federal campaign contributions and lobbying data tracker Open Secrets has perhaps the most jaw-dropping illustration of Corkers rise to wealth.

Israel to Name Western Wall Train Station in Jerusalem After Donald Trump
I need to puke now
Decision made following U.S. president's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Yedioth Ahronoth daily reports
Israel plans to name a train station near the Western Wall in Jerusalem after U.S. President Donald Trump, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz told the Yedioth Ahronoth daily on Wednesday.
The train station is being planned for the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem's Old City. Katz said he decided to honor Trump in this way following the president's decision early this month to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and to ultimately move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Let's talk Tips
Paraphrased from the article which is behind a paywall and some of my own editorializing,
As you visit your favorite restaurant this holiday season, keep this in mind. Trump's Department of Labor is rescinding rules concerning TIPS.(Tips should go to the person being tipped, duh)
On the one hand the restaurant industry justification for making us pay tips to wait staff is the tip is for good service, ostensibly the particular person giving the good service. On the other hand the restaurant industry is pressuring the government to allow THEM to decide what happens to those TIPS.
Officials argue that this will free restaurants to use some of the tip money to reward lowly dishwashers, line cooks and other workers who toil in the less glamorous quarters and presumably make less than servers who get tips(which cancels out the original justification for TIPS).
The governments proposal makes clear that business owners would have no obligation to use the money in this way. They would be free to pocket some or all of that cash, spend it to spiff up the dining room or use it to underwrite $2 margaritas at happy hour. And thats what makes this proposal so disturbing.
By changing the original justification of tipping, the government might well end up destroying the practice, a practice BTW I don't agree with. Wait staff should be paid a living wage and we should pay for it, like every other business model on Earth. Either way, working-class Americans, ESPECIALLY people who believed that Mr. Trump would fight for them will get screwed because many people will stop eating out, or giving TIP money to the restaurant employer to do with as they wish. Another workaround might be an alternative method of getting the TIP to wait staff.
The Trump Administration to Restaurants: Take the Tips!
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/21/opinion/trump-administration-restaurants-tipping.html?_r=0
Most Americans assume that when they leave a tip for waiters and bartenders, those workers pocket the money. That could become wishful thinking under a Trump administration proposal that would give restaurants and other businesses complete control over the tips earned by their employees.
The Department of Labor recently proposed allowing employers to pool tips and use them as they see fit as long as all of their workers are paid at least the minimum wage, which is $7.25 an hour nationally and higher in some states and cities. Officials argue that this will free restaurants to use some of the tip money to reward lowly dishwashers, line cooks and other workers who toil in the less glamorous quarters and presumably make less than servers who get tips. Using tips to compensate all employees sounds like a worthy cause, but a simple reading of the governments proposal makes clear that business owners would have no obligation to use the money in this way. They would be free to pocket some or all of that cash, spend it to spiff up the dining room or use it to underwrite $2 margaritas at happy hour. And thats what makes this proposal so disturbing.
The 3.2 million Americans who work as waiters, waitresses and bartenders include some of the lowest-compensated working people in the country. The median hourly wage for waiters and waitresses was $9.61 an hour last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Further, there is a sordid history of restaurant owners who steal tips, and of settlements in which they have agreed to repay workers millions of dollars.
Not to worry, says the Labor Department, which argues, oddly and unconvincingly, that workers will be better off no matter how owners spend the money. Enlarging dining rooms, reducing menu prices or offering paid time off should be seen as potential benefits to employees and the economy over all. The department also assures us that owners will funnel tip money to employees because workers would quit otherwise.
OMG, You'll want to puke: Megyn Kelly Is Now the Highest-Paid NBC News Anchor
Megyn Kelly is now not only one of the highest-paid female TV anchors, she also reportedly makes more than any on-air talent at NBC following the termination of her colleague, longtime Today Show co-host Matt Lauer.
The network announced Wednesday morning that Lauer had been terminated from NBC News after more than two decades as co-host of the Today Show following accusations of sexual misconduct. NBC News chairman Andy Lack said that a complaint had been filed against Lauer on Monday night. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years hes been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident, Lack said in a statement.

New Realtor Porn now available from Disney/FYI/A&E, fake like most
Tampa Realtor, wife of baseballs Gary Sheffield, stars in not-quite-real reality TV show
On the first episode of TVs newest real estate show, Tampa agent DeLeon Sheffield welcomes client John Racener to a large house for sale.
"I love this part right here," Racener exclaims as they step onto a covered lanai. "Oooo, awesome, he says of the master bedroom. And when asked if this house "is the one," he replies: "I think it is."
In fact, Racener already owns the house and has for the past seven years.
Not everything is what it appears to be in Sheffield Real Estate, a "reality" show that debuted last month starring Sheffield and her husband, former Major League Baseball star Gary Sheffield. Some of the buyers really arent buyers. While the show portrays DeLeon as a leading Realtor in luxury homes, she actually ranks far below Tampa Bays top agents some of whom declined to let camera crews film their high-end properties.

Roy Moore is the last straw, you can now call me a Democrat
