dimestore radio - oversight (studio-2002) another I wrote the music for and played guitar

Call it the song I'm second most proud of. Starts slow but 2nd half of it gets cooking, I promise, including a solo I came up with on the spot in the studio that I totally love

dimestore radio - oversight

Dave Kovacovich - Vocals
Pete Kuhl - Bass, Drums, Backing Vocals
Brett James (aka yours truly) - Guitars
Guest Musician who's name eludes me ATM - Theremin

Lyrics and Melody: Dave
Music: Brett and Pete
Recorded: Oakland, CA 2002

"it's not worth it"
said the captain
as he turned the ship away

see the tears fall
from your eyelid
hold your breath
begin to pray

and I feel
oh I'll miss this place
oh I'll miss this place

now it's colder
and the control tower
hangs their hair
and prepares
words

build a statue
tell my daughter
as my soul
floats back
to earth

and I feel
oh I'll miss this place
oh I'll miss this
feel
oh I'll miss this place
oh I'll miss this place

and as the aliens
approach him
as the stars scatter like stairs
as the spirits arms surround him
the tourists watch
from the observation deck

he floats away ...

(Mr L's scorching guitar solo that kinda makes the whole song if I say so myself )

it never happened
mind your business
try to be more down to earth

Fred Rogers - Acts of Kindness (in real life, from twitter yesterday)

https://twitter.com/fasc1nate/status/1669806587052171264

Beth Usher was a child suffering from a rare brain condition called Rasmussen's Encephalitis. Rasmussen's Encephalitis is a sporadic, chronic inflammatory neurological disease that usually affects only one hemisphere (half) of the brain. It most often occurs in children under 10 but can also affect adolescents and adults.

Usher would suffer 100 seizures a day due to this condition. However, for 30 minutes a day, the seizures would stop when she watched the children's educational TV show, Mr. Roger's Neighbourhood.

To try to help Beth, she would undergo surgery. She was told there was a possibility she would die. Beth's mother, Kathy, reached out to the Mr. Rogers show to ease her daughters' anxieties. Kathy requested an autograph, but what she got would save her daughter's life.

Fred Rogers, the show's presenter, gave Beth a phone call. This is what Beth had to say about the call:

“I was over the moon. I told him things I would never tell my mom or my dad. I told him about the surgery and how I might die. And how I didn’t want to die because I didn’t want to leave my brother. It was like talking to an old friend".

Rogers also had other cast members play in character during the call. They comforted Beth and told her to stay strong and that she would be ok.

Beth then had her surgery, which lasted for 12 hours. She was then put into a coma for 2 months. Rogers would call the hospital every day to check on her.

When she was not improving, Roger went to the hospital to put on her puppet show, which you see above.

Beth fully recovered, met Rogers again afterward, and credited him with giving her strength during her tough times.

Rogers was adamant about the media not covering his visit, as he did not want his acts of kindness to be glorified. This is one of the only pictures of his visit.

Rogers, who was a devout Christian, used his show to make iconic statements against racism, as well as to help children to feel happy and empowered. Rogers passed away in 2003.

Playing for Change - Cotton Fields (Back Home) - Leadbelly song

Among the first 45's I had a little kid was Johnny Mann Singers version of this song. I used to play it over and over and sing along. LOVED this song when I'z like 7 yo.

This, along with my stepdad playing Nitty Gritty Dirt Band all the time at the house in my formative years, is probably why I grew up to be an Americana fan.

The list of artists who've covered this classic is pretty amazing ... Harry Belafonte, Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, Creedence, Beach Boys, Elvis ... to name a few. And Van Morrison's album from 3 months ago (Moving On Skiffle) has a cover of it. As an aside, I'm kinda blown away by how great he still sounds. His voice has barely aged at 77.

Spanish song using the exact same music and melody, but totally different lyrics:

Jason Isbell US tour opened last night, he's betting big on the new record Weathervanes

Setlist is posted ... and he's literally he's playing the entire new record

From Southeastern and Something More than Free ... only 3 tracks. Little saddened by that (I have tix for 7/11), though I do love the new album. Cover Me Up, Stockholm, and 24 Frames are the ones he's playing. Was definitely hoping for a bit more from those 2 records, but ... I'm sure it'll be killer anyway.

And 0 earlier songs like Alabama Pines or Dress Blues or Tour of Duty, nor any Drive-By Truckers. Gotta give him some props for refusing to rest on his laurels.

The one cover is Honeysuckle Blue from Sadler's previous band Drivin' and Cryin' (though he was 3 y.o. when it came out lol). It's a pretty good song though and fits their milieu perfectly. I'm sure Sadler's played it many times before, live.

I apologize for my rant about women's sports last night that was rightly removed.

I shouldn't be drunk-posting like that.

I really want you to know I support every other trans-positive issue 100% ... but I struggle with the fairness factor when it comes to that one.

And Abbott is a dick, and he and his ilk are just doing this to set us at each others throats. I know I'm not the only liberal person that struggles with their position on this subject.

Please don't think I'm a bigot, I'm really, really not.

Sorry for making anyone feel bad.

I love you guys and gals

Ever noticed this famous Zeppelin song is reminiscent of a famous earlier Doobie Brothers Song?

Trampled Underfoot from Physical Graffiti (from 1975 though it's known to have a lot of songs written for past albums on it, like Houses of the Holy)

Slow Train Running (1973)

It's not just the constant repetition of the word love ... the relation has a deeper music theory component.

And it's not in the same key, not quite that simple ... so what music nerd can explain why they sound similar?

american aquarium - casualties (live from the Ryman - 2022) from album produced by Isbell in 2012

Singer BJ has followed a similar path to Jason, clean for awhile, looks and sounds great. This is just a great track.

Bonus track, love this more recent one:

if I can't be next to you ... i'll settle for the ghost of you ... i miss you more than life

Great Beiber cover on an really good Americana album that's gotten almost no attention since it's 2022 release, which baffles me.

From: Josiah and the Bonnevilles - 2022.

It's on Spotify at least, and it's not all covers. But there's also an acoustic version of Taylor's Anti-Hero, and like this one, it's better than the original.

To my Americana-loving friends + Spotify users, should check this album out.

In case you missed one of the greatest moments in PGA Tour history yesterday ...

The FOURTH sudden death playoff hole, with his opponent well set for a birdie, Canadian Nick Taylor putts for Eagle from 72 feet away ... bear in mind it's been 69 years since a Canadian won the Canadian Open ... this was freaking magic right here ...

And let's not make it about politics for now, this was just so, so amazing!
