Historian: German denazification has lessons on how to deal with post-Trump America

Over the last four years, President Donald Trump’s White House has been riddled with scandals, lawsuits, and other incriminating claims with evidence to support wrongdoing. But due to presidential protections, no one has been able to hold Trump accountable for his actions. As more evidence continues to mount against the president and many White House officials within his administration, calls for prosecution have become more profound.

In fact, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris weighed in on Trump’s legal battles as she admitted that if she were president, her administration would prosecute Trump. So is there a real possibility the president and his allies could face consequences for their actions? A Washington Post editorial breaks offers a realistic perspective on whether or not this could occur.
snip---
If Trump and his associates are not prosecuted, they argue, it might set a devastating precedent. Others worry that the desire to prosecute Trump could amount to no more than “vengeance” that would further erode democratic norms. This vigorous debate on the left asks how we as a nation can get to the bottom of the Trump administration’s criminal behavior, while also ensuring that no future administration can act in such a manner again.

The piece went on to offer a comparison of Germany’s denazification period to the impending post-Trump era of the United States. Since Trump’s support base is still relatively solid, there are concerns about how a Trump prosecution could further polarize the nation. The columnist also noted that denazification in Germany took decades. So, it may require an extended period of time before polarization ends.

First, we have our Nuremberg trials. Then we proceed with systematic de-nazification.

Trump has reportedly given up hopes of overturning battleground defeats and is trying to delay a

final vote count in a desperate bid to throw Biden's victory into doubt

President Trump has reportedly abandoned hopes of disqualifying enough mail-in votes to overturn the result of the election and is instead attempting to delay final vote counts for long enough to throw Biden's victory into doubt, according to a report.

The Washington Post reported that the Trump team is now pinning its hopes on a bid to delay vote certification in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania.

Rudy Giuliani, the lawyer leading Trump's team, reportedly told two Republican officials — who spoke to The Washington Post anonymously — that his plan is to delay the vote counts for long enough that Trump's campaign can pressure Republican lawmakers to handpick the electors on the electoral college when it meets to submit votes for the next president in December, and disrupt the process in Trump's favour.
snip
The president's latest efforts appear almost certain to fail, The Washington Post reported, because elected officials in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — two battleground states where the Trump campaign would likely focus its efforts — do not select electors, and other states have not indicated they would agree to any such political pressure.

The Supreme Court is running the clock on Trump's election lawsuits, experts say

President Donald Trump is pursuing an expansive legal assault on vote certification in battleground states that he lost to President-elect Joe Biden.

And in his speech on election night falsely declaring victory, he said "we'll be going to the US Supreme Court" to address the "major fraud in our nation."

The Supreme Court doesn't seem interested.

The lack of movement from the Supreme Court, according to Michael Dorf, a constitutional-law professor at Cornell Law School, suggests that Chief Justice John Roberts has little appetite to take on the case.

The Dakotas are 'as bad as it gets anywhere in the world' for COVID-19

South Dakota welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to a massive motorcycle rally this summer, declined to cancel the state fair and still doesn't require masks. Now its hospitals are filling up and the state's current COVID-19 death rate is among the worst in the world.

The situation is similarly dire in North Dakota, with the state's governor recently moving to allow health care workers who have tested positive for COVID-19 to continue working if they don't show symptoms. It's a controversial policy recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a crisis situation where hospitals are short-staffed.

And now — after months of resisting a statewide mask mandate — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum changed course late Friday, ordering masks to be worn statewide and imposing several business restrictions.
snip---
Death rates in the past week in North and South Dakota are about the same or higher than the hardest-hit countries in the world right now — the Czech Republic, Belgium and Bosnia and Herzegovina — according to Friday New York Times data. And there's currently nowhere in the U.S. where COVID-19 deaths are more common than in the Dakotas, according to data published by The COVID Tracking Project.

Biden win in Arizona 'confirmed' as analyst says there is now no way back for Trump

Source: UK Independent

President-elect Joe Biden has finally been announced as the winner in Arizona by one of the last remaining analysts to call the state, days after the Associated Press, Fox News and several other networks projected his victory.

Mr Biden no longer needed to win Arizona’s 11 electoral votes, which take him to a total of 290, after he was declared the winner in the crucial swing state ofPennsylvania on Saturday.

But the result in Arizona was still being closely watched, after some analysts suggested the projection of a result in the state on election night itself was a little premature.
snip----
The election results reporting website Decision Desk HQ becomes the latest to call Arizona, projecting it in Mr Biden’s favour late on Wednesday with an estimated 24,000 ballots still to be counted. Though the gap in the state had been narrowing, analysts said they now believe there’s no way back for Donald Trump, who trails by around 11,600 votes.

Trump, Republicans, and their lawyers are very close to committing sedition.

Sedition is a serious felony punishable by fines and up to 20 years in prison and it refers to the act of inciting revolt or violence against a lawful authority with the goal of destroying or overthrowing it. The following provides an overview of this particular crime against the government, with historical references.

The federal law against seditious conspiracy can be found in Title 18 of the U.S. Code (which includes treason, rebellion, and similar offenses), specifically 18 U.S.C. § 2384. According to the statutory definition of sedition, it is a crime for two or more people within the jurisdiction of the United States:

To conspire to overthrow or destroy by force the government of the United States or to level war against them;

To oppose by force the authority of the United States government; to prevent, hinder, or delay by force the execution of any law of the United States; or

To take, seize, or possess by force any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof.

Trump and Republicans are deliberately endangering the health and safety

of the people of the United States by playing these deadly games with a legitimate election.

The virus is spinning out of control, tens of millions of Americans are suffering economically, and these cruel, heartless fascist monsters are spinning lies designed to obstruct and illegally subvert the will of the people, in order to end democracy and establish a fascist dictatorship in the United States.

Tell me again why I'm not supposed to call them, all of them, Nazis?

People are dying. People are suffering. It's like Republicans are carrying out some kind of sick, monstrous social experiment dreamed up by the infamous Nazi Angel of Death, Josef Mengele.

Shame, shame, shame on the Republican party forever. They are deliberately trying to illegitimately destroy the United States. There's no going back from here.

Every decent human being that is left in the US must join forces and unite to prevent Trump and the Republican fascists from illegitimately destroying our democracy and overthrowing our government in order to establish a Trump dictatorship.

Resist.

'These are dictator moves': Defense officials alarmed as Trump installs more loyalists at the Pentag

Source: Business Insider

President Trump is continuing to remove senior defence officials and replace them with loyalists, creating growing alarm in the Pentagon that his rapid overhaul of key staff could undermine national security.

Since Trump fired Secretary of Defense Mark Esper on Monday, three other Defense Department officials have either resigned or been sacked. Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy James Anderson quit on Tuesday after clashes with the White House over its attempts to insert controversial figures into top Pentagon positions.

One defense official was quoted by CNN as saying: "This is scary. It's very unsettling" adding that "these are dictator moves."

House Armed Services Chairman Adam Smith said in a statement on Tuesday that the "gutting" of the department ought to "alarm" Americans.

Officials at law firms representing Trump are balking at his efforts to overturn elections: report

On Monday, The New York Times reported that senior officials at multiple law firms representing President Donald Trump’s campaign in their lawsuits against the election counts are increasingly uncomfortable with their legal teams being used to advance arguments to undermine the legitimacy of the vote.

“Some senior lawyers at Jones Day, one of the country’s largest law firms, are worried that it is advancing arguments that lack evidence and may be helping Mr. Trump and his allies undermine the integrity of American elections, according to interviews with nine partners and associates, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their jobs,” reported Jessica Silver-Greenberg, Rachel Abrams, and David Enrich. “At another large firm, Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, based in Columbus, Ohio, lawyers have held internal meetings to voice similar concerns about their firm’s election-related work for Mr. Trump and the Republican Party, according to people at the firm. At least one lawyer quit in protest.”

Trump has had ties to Jones Day going back years, with one of the legal partners, Don McGahn, going on to serve as the president’s White House counsel and an adviser in his judicial appointments.
