In blow to Democrats, Republican Glenn Youngkin defeated Democrat Terry McAuliffe in Virginia's high-profile election for governor Tuesday, NBC News projects, flipping control of a state that President Joe Biden won handily just a year ago and suggesting trouble for his party in next year's midterm elections.
The GOP victory, powered by robust turnout in conservative rural counties, improved support in the suburbs, and a message focused on the economy and alleged anti-white bias in school curriculum, will likely serve as a blueprint for Republicans looking to recapture the House and Senate next year.
Youngkin, a former private equity executive and political newcomer, kept just enough distance former President Donald Trump while keeping his base engaged. McAuliffe, meanwhile, was weighed down by his party's post-Trump political fatigue, along with Biden's sinking poll numbers and gridlocked agenda in Washington, but ran a campaign that included damaging gaffes and, critics say, was overly reliant on trying to tie Youngkin to Trump.

I live in a bright Red district in Staten Island, NY. Lines were insane; I have never experienced this in an off-year. I voted for Eric Adams and some local races that are small.

Senate Democrats strike a deal to cut prescription drug prices in Biden's social spending plan

After previously being considered left on the cutting room floor, a deal to lower prescription drug costs is back in President Joe Biden's Build Back Better framework.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made the announcement Tuesday afternoon, noting that Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona is on board.

Found this disgusting, pro-NYC sanitation post on Facebook
Not sure if anyone without Facebook can see it, but here's the link. The worst part isn't "freedom to not be vaxxed" post though, it's the pictures of the sanitation drivers themselves. Please check it out, I'm horrified. I tried to link the pics but it won't let me. They have Biden and Mayor Bill de Blasio's picture taped to the front of their truck with targets on them.
I don't know who the author of the post is, but he posted it on a local Staten Island Facebook group.

Supreme Court won't review ACLU request for access to surveillance court rulings

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to review a request by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for access to decisions handed down by the U.S. surveillance court.
The court denied ACLU’s bid in an unsigned order, over a dissent by Justice Neil Gorsuch, who was joined by Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
The ACLU had asked the Supreme Court to consider whether Americans have a First Amendment right to access decisions handed down by the secretive court created by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which has played a central role amid the government’s expanded mass surveillance efforts over the past two decades.
The group argued in their April brief that the secret court’s once-narrow role ballooned following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and that its portfolio now has “profound implications for individual rights.”

Supreme Court to hear case on state efforts to revive a Trump immigration policy

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court agreed Friday to take up an effort by Republican officials to revive a Trump administration effort that denied green cards to immigrants considered likely to become overly dependent on government benefits.
The Department of Homeland Security announced in 2019 that it would expand the definition of "public charge," to be applied to people whose request to become lawful permanent residents could be denied because of a concern they would primarily depend on the government for their income.
In the past, the designation was largely based on an assessment that an immigrant would be dependent upon cash benefits. But the Trump administration broadened the definition to include non-cash benefits such as Medicaid, supplemental nutrition and federal housing assistance.
Anyone who would be likely to require that broader range of help for more than 12 months in any three-year period was swept into the expanded definition.

Virginia malls and shopping centers increase security amid ISIS threat

Police in Northern Virginia are on a heightened state of alert as a new law enforcement alert warned of a potential threat against malls and shopping centers located just outside of Washington, D.C. The threat originated with ISIS and is the basis for the alert, sources told CBS News
"We have increased our police presence throughout the county to include major thoroughfares, transit hubs, shopping plazas and shopping malls," Fairfax County police chief Kevin Davis said Friday.
Police said the increased law enforcement presence will be in place through the Halloween weekend and ahead of Virginia's gubernatorial election. Law enforcement officials said they are acting out of an abundance of caution, and as they learn more about the threat, the increased law enforcement presence could be extended through Tuesday's election.
"It's just our responsibility to have a greater presence, to be more aware and to ask the community to have their eyes and ears peeled for suspicious activities," Davis said.
