2 Investigators: City Settles Case Against Cop Who Made False 911 Call

-------

Taxpayers are shelling out seven figures in settlements.

In Gaspar’s case, he was a Mt. Carmel High School honor student when he and two friends were held at gunpoint by Chicago Police. The officers were acting on a false report by Morsi Murphy and believed the teens committed an armed robbery.

“I was scared for my life,” said Gaspar about having a police officer’s gun pointed to his head. “My hands were outside the window so he [officer] could see them and he said, ‘If you move them, I’m going to blow your head off’.”

Morsi Murphy was off-duty when she called 911 to report a robbery at a convenience store. The robbery never happened. The officer even reported different suspects in the case.

“In a gray hoodie. He’s white,” said Morsi Murphy who also said, “He’s Mexican. There’s three male blacks in the car.”

Morsi Murphy followed Gaspar and his friends as they left the store, then claimed the teens robbed yet another place.

“I guarantee you, they robbed this gas station,” reported Morsi Murphy.

Florida school reportedly edits girls' yearbook photos, covering exposed skin
Parents and students are calling out Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County for apparently editing girls' photos to cover up exposed skin.

Parents and students of a Florida high school are criticizing what they say is a double standard in the dress code policy after several girls' yearbook photos were reportedly edited.

A review of yearbook photos conducted by NBC affiliate WTLV of Jacksonville shows that some female students at Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County had their yearbook photos altered to cover up areas of their chest, according to the station.

In the pictures, which the outlet posted, the student's clothing was digitally cut and pasted over their exposed skin.

“They completely altered her photo, and it makes her chest looked deformed in a way,” said parent Adrian Bartlett.

Rick Santorum axed by CNN over racist remarks on Native Americans
Ex-Republican senator’s April comments prompted outrage
Santorum said he misspoke but did not apologize for remarks

CNN has dropped former Republican US senator Rick Santorum as a senior political commentator after racist remarks he made about Native Americans at an event in April.

News of Santorum’s termination was first reported by HuffPost. A CNN spokesperson confirmed to the Guardian that the network has parted ways with Santorum. No further comment on the firing was provided, though an anonymous CNN executive told HuffPost that “leadership wasn’t particularly satisfied with that appearance. None of the anchors wanted to book him.”

Speaking at an event for the Young Americans Foundation, a conservative youth group, Santorum said that there was “nothing” in the US before Europeans colonizers arrived.

“We came here and created a blank slate,” he said. “We birthed a nation from nothing. I mean, there was nothing here. I mean, yes we have Native Americans, but candidly there isn’t much Native American culture in American culture.”

The comments sparked outrage among indigenous groups, including the National Congress of American Indians, which specifically called on CNN to fire Santorum over the remarks.

Say Goodbye to the Most Viral Video of All Time
14 years after enrapturing the world, 'Charlie Bit My Finger' will be yanked from YouTube, become NFT

Fourteen years ago to the day, two little boys made YouTube history as the stars of what would become the most viewed viral video of all time. Now, you've got just one more day to watch it on the platform, as it's about to join the world of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, reports USA Today. That video is "Charlie Bit My Finger," uploaded on May 22, 2007, which showed 3-year-old Harry Davies-Carr holding his 1-year-old brother, Charlie, and sticking his finger in the baby's mouth—at which point Charlie chomps down and elicits the video's famous words from a distressed Harry, as Charlie smiles and giggles. Now, via CharlieBitMe.com, the Davis-Carr family announces that an auction will start at 10am ET on Saturday to sell the 55-second video as an NFT. The clip, which has more than 882,000,000 views on YouTube, will be yanked from the platform as of Sunday.

Caitlyn Jenner flakes out on popular conservative podcast, hosts ruthlessly mock her 'scam' campaign

https://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/Caitlyn-Jenner-governor-recall-podcast-Newsom-Smug-16194166.php

California gubernatorial recall election candidate Caitlyn Jenner has made herself scarce to media outlets since declaring her candidacy, and apparently pulled a no-show on a popular conservative podcast.

The "Ruthless" podcast, hosted by former Mitch McConnell Chief of Staff Josh Holmes and Twitter troll extraordinaire Comfortably Smug, was launched in October 2020 and regularly features prominent Republican politicians. Ted Cruz, Kevin McCarthy, Chris Christie, Mike Lee and more have all appeared on the podcast.

Holmes opened the latest edition of the podcast by stating that Jenner's campaign reached out to the "Ruthless" team to schedule an appearance —only for Jenner to cancel last-minute. Podcast personality Amanda Henneberg, who goes by "Hollywood Henn," said she gave Jenner's team "several other options" for times to record, but Jenner's campaign still turned them down.

Holmes did not hold back.

"You don't reach out to a show that you ultimately don't go on," he said. "You don't unprofessionally let people know that you can't make it unless you are a completely unorganized s—tshow that is a scam campaign from the very beginning that is doing nothing but trying to draw attention away from legitimate candidates who have a capacity to try to unseat the most liberal, disingenuous piece of garbage governor in this country, maybe aside from Gov. Cuomo."

The hosts spent several minutes blasting Jenner for the no-show, especially since Jenner has done only two interviews (one with Fox News' Sean Hannity and the other with CNN's Dana Ba

'The system failed her': NYPD came to slain woman's home hour before she was killed

‘The system failed her’: NYPD came to slain woman’s home hour before she was killed

The NYPD showed up to a Harlem nursing student’s apartment less than an hour before she was allegedly stabbed to death by her abusive ex-boyfriend because he was trying to break in — but instead of making an effort to find him or protect her in any way, they simply took a report and left, according to police, sources and her family.

Officers from Manhattan’s 25th Precinct — where Alayna Hardy, 27, had filed six previous domestic violence reports against Fernando Munera — were soon called back to the apartment Wednesday night, but it was too late.

Munera had broken in through the fire escape after police left and stabbed her multiple times until she died.

“They should’ve put a plainclothes police officer out there or something,” Hardy’s uncle Jared Hardy told The Post by phone.

------------------

Dorchen Leidholdt, a domestic violence expert and the director of Sanctuary for Families legal center, who’s been working with gender-based violence survivors for nearly 50 years, said it is “inexplicable” that the police “simply left.”

“The police should’ve been there, they should’ve looked for him and they should’ve assessed the danger and understood … that this victim was at a great risk of danger and they should’ve stayed on the scene for at least for an hour,” Leidholdt said.

6-year-old boy fatally shot during apparent road rage incident on 55 Freeway in southern california

A 6-year-old boy was fatally wounded Friday when a gunman opened fire on the 55 Freeway in Orange on Friday during a road rage incident, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The suspect fled immediately after the shooting near West Chapman Avenue as police officers and paramedics responded to the gunfire shortly after 8 a.m., authorities said.

The boy’s mother was traveling on the northbound freeway with her child in the booster seat when the shooting occurred, CHP officials said. Witnesses reported hearing a gun shot from a white sedan right before the child’s mother pulled her vehicle over to the shoulder.

“This was an isolated road rage incident,” said CHP Officer Florentino Olivera. He said the driver of the white sedan shot into the back of the mother’s Chevy Cruze sedan and then fled.

San Francisco's Shoplifting Surge

Soon after moving to San Francisco in 2016, I walked into a Walgreens in North Beach to buy an electric toothbrush.

As I was paying for it, a man walked into the store, grabbed a handful of beef jerky and walked out. I looked over at an employee, who shrugged. Then I went to Safeway next door for some groceries and I saw a man stuffing three bottles of wine into a backpack and walking casually toward the exit. On his way out he bagged some snacks. I asked the Safeway clerk about the thefts.

“I’m new to San Francisco,” I said. “Is it optional to pay for things here?”

Five years later, the shoplifting epidemic in San Francisco has only worsened.

At a board of supervisors hearing last week, representatives from Walgreens said that thefts at its stores in San Francisco were four times the chain’s national average, and that it had closed 17 stores, largely because the scale of thefts had made business untenable.

Brendan Dugan, the director of the retail crime division at CVS Health, called San Francisco “one of the epicenters of organized retail crime” and said employees were instructed not to pursue suspected thieves because encounters had become too dangerous.

"Me too" moment for breweries: Outpouring of Beer Industry Sexual Abuse Allegations on Instagram

Judgment Day — Outpouring of Beer Industry Sexual Abuse Allegations on Instagram Sparks Questions of Guilt, Innocence, and Legal Vulnerability

A post from Brienne Allan's Instagram account during her time sharing stories of sexual harassment, assault, and more. Courtesy of Brienne Allan.

Update 5/18: Jacob McKean, founder and CEO of San Diego’s Modern Times Beer, has stepped down from his role with the company. The announcement came after allegations against the brewery—and McKean specifically—that were shared to Instagram as part of a large-scale #MeToo outpouring of abuse and misconduct claims within the beer industry. Modern Times was alleged to have fostered a hostile work environment for people of color, and employee Derek Freese was alleged to have grabbed a person’s crotch. Brewbound reported on May 18 that Freese had been terminated. In announcing his departure, McKean wrote, in part: “I am stepping down from my role as CEO, and we will begin a formal search for new company leadership. In order to navigate us out of this extremely difficult moment, we need leadership with the skill and experience to handle it effectively. It's time for a change.”

On the afternoon of May 11, Brienne Allan asked a question via her Instagram Stories: Had other people in the brewing industry experienced sexism? Allan, the production manager at Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts, wasn’t prepared for the number and depth of responses she received, which now total more than 800. Stories of women sharing how they were told they weren’t strong enough to lift kegs quickly turned into allegations of sexual harassment, racism, and sexual assault.

After Allan herself posted a story that read: “Shaun Hill [of Hill Farmstead Brewery] told his brewer he set up the couch in his Airbnb to fuck me on after [beer festival] Pils and Love two years ago,” people began sending her stories that named people in the beer industry and/or the brewery where they work. (Hill gave a lengthy statement to VinePair that reads, in part: “I surely have a different perspective on what has been shared both overtly and anonymously, but what matters is how each person sees it.”) Other brewers and owners, including Søren Wagner of Dry & Bitter in Gørløse, Denmark and Jean Broillet IV of Tired Hands Brewing Company in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, were also named in numerous allegations; Wagner is now on a leave of absence from Dry & Bitter and Broillet has temporarily stepped away from Tired Hands. Someone whose identity GBH could not verify has created a document listing breweries mentioned in Allan’s Instagram Stories.

Original Pattern fires assistant brewer as accusations of misogyny shake Bay Area breweries

It all started with a simple Instagram inquiry. On May 11, Massachusetts brewer Brienne Allen (who goes by the Instagram handle @ratmagnet) proposed a question to her followers in the brewing industry: “What sexist comments have you experienced?”

Unknowingly, she’d opened the floodgates to hundreds of stories. Messages began pouring in, with people recounting everything from sexist comments to harrowing accounts of sexual harassment, racism, and sexual assault. Allen shared every comment anonymously to her Instagram story, with some even naming particular breweries and names of employees. Allen has received more than 800 responses as of Tuesday, Good Beer Hunting reported.

A few Bay Area breweries showed up in the outpouring of allegations, as did Beer Baron, a beer and whisky bar and restaurant with locations in Livermore, Pleasanton, Oakland, and Santa Rosa. Eight different anonymous allegations posted to Allen’s Instagram story involved Beer Baron beer director Corey Bryce Whelchel, covering everything from misogyny to inappropriate remarks.
