SAN JOSE – The Oak Grove School District has confirmed one of its employees is a “person of interest” in a case involving a woman who intentionally coughed on a baby at a San Jose Yogurtland last week.

In a statement, the district said it was “aware of an incident allegedly involving one of our employees who was videotaped coughing on a baby.”

“We do not tolerate conduct from any employee that compromises any child’s safety,” the district said. “The employee who has been identified as a person of interest in this matter is currently off of work and not providing any services to our District students.”

The employee was not named in the statement. The district said it is cooperating with a police investigation.

San Jose police Sgt. Enrique Garcia said detectives are following up on leads and have not made an arrest.

The incident was reported at the Yogurtland at 5638 Cottle Road about 5:25 p.m. on June 19.

A woman, who was standing in front of a mother and her 1-year-old child, was upset that the mother was not “maintaining proper social distancing,” and removed her face mask, got close to the baby’s face and coughed two to three times, Garcia said.

Trump praises 'stop and frisk' as a 'great thing' for promoting law and order

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/trump-praises-stop-and-frisk-as-a-great-thing-for-promoting-law-and-order-060212529.html

When the topic of gun violence came up, Trump was quick to call out some of the more violent cities in the U.S. “Chicago is an example,” said Trump. “It's worse than Afghanistan.”

Trump suggested that some of the larger Black urban communities in cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Baltimore are especially bad. Trump said, “These cities... it is like living in Hell.” Trump admitted that people question whether or not statements like that are racist, saying, "Everyone gets upset when I say it. They say, 'Oh, is that a racist statement?' It's not a racist — frankly, Black people come up to me and say, 'Thank you. Thank you, sir, for saying it.'"

While Trump did not provide a plan for curbing the violence, he did suggest a very controversial policing tactic. “I know it's very controversial to say, stop and frisk,” said Trump. “Stop and frisk - you take guns away.”

Trump praised the “stop and frisk” practice, which was implemented by New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. “It was a great thing he did for New York,” claimed Trump.

Despite current protests calling for a reduction in policing, both Hannity and Trump think the practice could promote law and order. “We can stop [violence] quickly,” said Trump. “And at some point, in the not-too-distant future, I'm going to do it.”

another famous painting ruined by restoration: Before and after (two attempts)

A botched restoration has left yet another famous painting unrecognizable.

This time, the restoration has left a painting of the Virgin Mary looking more like a kindergartener's lopsided self-portrait. The painting was a copy of "The Immaculate Conception of El Escorial," of the Virgin Mary was one of a famous series by the 17th-century Spanish artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. The original version by Murillo is hanging in the Prado Museum in Madrid, and this copy is likely to be by Murillo as well, according to a statement from the Association of Conservators-Restorers (ACRE) of Spain. ACRE is an advocacy group that has publicized the botched artwork as part of an effort to change the rules around restoring paintings in the country.

According to a Spanish-language report in Europa Press, the private collector who owned the copy hired a furniture restorer to fix up the old painting. He returned the painting in an unrecognizable, smudged state. After the collector complained, the restorer made another attempt to fix the painting, and returned it looking even less like the original artwork.

Man who spent year in jail on false charges rescues cop from burning car

https://nypost.com/2020/06/25/man-who-spent-year-in-jail-on-false-charges-rescues-cop/

A Pennsylvania man who was once falsely accused of pointing a gun at a cop recently saved an officer from a burning car, according to a report.

Daylan McLee — who spent a year in jail awaiting trial on the bogus charges — was at a family Father’s Day cookout in Uniontown, PA, when he heard a loud crash.

The brave 31-year-old ran outside and pulled Officer Jay Hanley from the mangled patrol car as flames began to spread into the cabin, saving the cop’s life.

“There is value in every human life. We are all children of God and I can’t imagine just watching anyone burn,” McLee told the Associated Press.

“No matter what other people have done to me, or other officers, I thought, ‘this guy deserves to make it home safely to his family.’”

The dad of two had previous run-ins with the police, including being arrested in March 2016 outside an American Legion bar in Dunbar, PA, where a fight had broken out.

A Pennsylvania State Police trooper had said that McLee pointed a weapon at him twice.

But security footage showed that McLee had actually disarmed a man at the scene, and then quickly discarded the gun.

McLee, who is black, spent a year behind bars before a jury acquitted him of the charges after reviewing the video, according to the AP.

Another Nightmare Video and the Police on the Defensive in Tucson: Carlos Ingram Lopez

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/25/us/carlos-ingram-lopez-death-tucson-.html

It was another gruesome video of policing in America — a naked Latino man, his face covered by a mesh spit guard, his hands cuffed behind him as he lay dying face down on the ground at his grandmother’s house. He pleaded for water more than a dozen times, saying he could not breathe as police officers restrained his legs and torso.

This time, the scene was a southern Arizona city with a politically moderate image, a large Latino population and a Police Department said to be relatively progressive.

The victim was Carlos Ingram Lopez, a 27-year-old cooking school graduate who prepared every meal from scratch for his 2-year-old daughter and watched YouTube videos to learn how to comb her hair. His death, as he was having a mental health crisis that led to a call for help, was a jarring reminder that Latinos as well as African-Americans have a troubled history with the police, even though Latinos’ struggles do not get the same attention.

?quality=90&auto=webp

Three officers involved in Mr. Lopez’s death resigned before the public release of the video, and Chris Magnus, Tucson’s police chief, offered to resign.

-----------

Ms. Jaramillo, the Tucson lawyer, said she had been having trouble sleeping since viewing the video in which Mr. Lopez died while calling out for his nana, or grandmother.

Ms. Jaramillo, who now assists victims of domestic violence, said she was struck especially by how Mr. Lopez’s grandmother, Magdalena Ingram, was treated dismissively by officers in her own home when she asked about her grandson while the officers were restraining him. She had called 911 because he was having a mental health crisis and acting erratically.

It's not just you -- there's a sudden wave of fireworks exploding in cities across the US

https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/23/us/firework-complaints-new-york-trnd/index.html

(CNN)The Fourth of July is still over a week away, but in many cities, it's already arrived. From New York to San Francisco, the skies light up every night -- and early morning -- for hours, and with no apparent reason.

Now, officials have had enough.

Firework complaints are soaring, and they come after months of pandemic-induced isolation followed by weeks of tense protests against police brutality and racism.

Why the fireworks are going off so frequently is anyone's guess. And city officials say they don't yet know where the big ones are coming from.

Conspiracies abound over who's responsible, but it's clear that the incessant fireworks displays are an inconvenient and dangerous phenomenon in an already surreal American moment.

There seems to be no geographic pattern behind which cities are shooting off the most.
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh told reporters that calls to police about illegal fireworks jumped 2,300% in May compared to the same period in 2019. He said some of the calls were originally for gunshots that turned out to be fireworks.

--------

California's Alameda County, near San Francisco, has received complaints about a "higher than normal use" of illegal fireworks, too, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Department.

Southern California's staying up all night, too.
