U.S. records 100K COVID-19 cases for first time since February

Despite the widespread availability of vaccines nationwide, the United States has recorded its first day of more than 100,000 new COVID-19 infections in nearly six months.

On Friday, the country had 101,171 confirmed new cases, the most since it recorded 106,732 on Feb. 6, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It’s the latest sign that a pandemic the country appeared largely to have reined in several weeks ago is raging again amid the spread of the highly contagious delta variant and lagging vaccination rates.

The country’s seven-day average for new infections now sits at 72,493, up 531% from six weeks earlier. That is the highest seven-day average since Feb. 17. Meanwhile, COVID-19 deaths are up 81% from July 10 to an average of 308 a day, and hospitalizations are up 41% over just one week.

Concerns about the delta variant prompted the CDC last week to change its guidance to say that fully vaccinated people should again wear masks in indoor public places when in areas with high or substantial transmission rates. In an internal document last week, the CDC said that delta variant is more contagious than the common cold, flu, smallpox and Ebola virus. The document says vaccinated people with breakthrough infections can transmit the virus as easily as those who are unvaccinated.

Coronavirus cases are rising in all 50 states, but those with low vaccination rates generally are faring worse than those with higher levels of inoculations. For example, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama — all with vaccination rates of 37% or lower — are among the five states with the highest per-capita infections. Louisiana is reporting its highest seven-day average in new infections of the pandemic — more than 4,100 cases a day. Meanwhile, Florida broke pandemic records for its most new cases in a day (21,683) and hospitalizations (10,207) over the weekend.

Olympic Women's Football semi-final spoiler #2

We are going to the Gold medal game versus Canada. Hopefully we finally break our Final curse (for both men and women's' football)

Good news for the USA too, as Ellie Carpenter, one of the Matildas' best defenders, got a VERY late red card (for the denial of clear goal-scoring opportunity, she pulled down Lina Hurtig, who was on a breakaway) and is out of the Bronze medal game versus the US.

Olympic Women's Football semi-final spoiler

Canada takes out the US nil 1 on a 75th minute pen.

First time Canada has beaten the US in 20 years. 37 game winless streak.

Australia v Sweden next up to see who will play Canada for the gold.

My prediction: Red State Govs & Legislatures will try to block Dem-run cities' eviction moratoriums

They have done it with masking laws, etc. and they revel in human misery, so this will be the perfect opportunity to 'own the libs' once again. The blockages will definitively be couched in racist framings as well, as the disparate impact of the evictions on PoC will be tremendous.

LGBTQ Olympic Gold and World Record just now in women's athletics (warning, spoiler)

Yulimar Rojas collapses after breaking triple jump world record to win Olympic gold

Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas smashed the triple jump world record in the Olympic final.

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/othersport/1470666/Yulimar-Rojas-Olympics-triple-jump-world-record-gold-medal

Yulimar Rojas secured the triple jump world record with her last jump in the Olympic final before celebrating wildly. The Venezuela star was the heavy favourite heading into the final and had already secured the gold medal with her very first jump of 15.41m. That was just shy of the world record held by Inessa Kravets set in 1995.

It was clear with every jump after first first successful attempt, Rojas was going for the world record. None of the competitors were able to come close to her first jump, giving Rojas the opportunity to try. And she sailed over the world-record mark in her third attempt, only to foul out by stepping over the board.

It looked as though the world record attempt was going to evade Rojas though heading into her final attempt. The small crowd of coaches and fellow athletes in the stadium were fully behind her as Rojas bounded down the runway one last time.

It looked as though Rojas had pulled out of the jump on the bound stage, but she somehow pulled out an insane jump to climb over the world record mark. Rojas knew it from the moment she stood out of the pit and it was soon confirmed that her massive jump measured 15.67m.
