Right-wing Twitter account supported by Musk exposed as Russian Troll

The End Wokeness Twitter account is 100% operated by a foreign power. No American would refer to the emergency number 911 as 9-11 nor would they easily be able to produce the Polish character ę on a us-en keyboard.

Critical Thinking and Intellectual Honesty and logical fallacies

Lately, I have seen a group that generally sticks with the principles I will lay out (most likely why they are liberal or Democrats) straying far from these principles when discussing the war in Gaza and the related topic of anti-Semitism. While I appreciate that for many, this is a very emotional issue, it's never wise or productive to stray from these important tenets.

Critical Thinking

1. gather complete information – more than one source
2. understand and define terms (make others define terms, too)
3. question the methods by which results were derived
4. question the conclusion: do the facts support it? is there evidence of bias? remember correlation does not equal causation.
5. uncover assumptions and biases
6. question the source of information
7. don’t expect all the answers
8. examine the big picture
9. look for multiple cause and effect
10. watch for thought stopping sensationalism
11. understand your own biases and values

Here are the first 4 signs (among 10 at the link) of intellectual honesty

1. Do not overstate the power of your argument. One’s sense of conviction should be in proportion to the level of clear evidence assessable by most. If someone portrays their opponents as being either stupid or dishonest for disagreeing, intellectual dishonesty is probably in play. Intellectual honesty is most often associated with humility, not arrogance.

2. Show a willingness to publicly acknowledge that reasonable alternative viewpoints exist. The alternative views do not have to be treated as equally valid or powerful, but rarely is it the case that one and only one viewpoint has a complete monopoly on reason and evidence.

3. Be willing to publicly acknowledge and question one’s own assumptions and biases. All of us rely on assumptions when applying our world view to make sense of the data about the world. And all of us bring various biases to the table.

4. Be willing to publicly acknowledge where your argument is weak.Almost all arguments have weak spots, but those who are trying to sell an ideology will have great difficulty with this point and would rather obscure or downplay any weak points.

As for logical fallacies, it's worth visiting this link.

GOP to NJ judge pick: Muslims need not apply

In case you missed it, we just scored a top-notch New Jersey nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit: A lawyer from Jersey City known as a defender of civil rights and religious freedom, who has support from both the Muslim and Jewish communities.

This should have been an historic moment – Adeel Mangi, picked by Joe Biden, would be the highest ranking Muslim judge in American history. His young kids were there for his recent confirmation hearing before the Senate, sporting ties.

But what we got instead was an ugly spectacle, and an insult to New Jersey. Instead of asking about his impressive qualifications or landmark cases, Senate Republicans shouted at and relentlessly interrupted Mangi with irrelevant, salacious questions about Israel, Hamas – even whether he celebrated 9-11.

Notably, another judicial nominee being vetted at the same hearing, who is Jewish, was not asked about Israel, or any of this. It’s just the new litmus test for Muslims, apparently – no matter if the man happens to be Pakistani American. They all look the same, right Tom Cotton?
