Anyone else seeing this trend in those not wearing masks? White middle-aged men?

Newsom mandated a state-wide mask mandate but I live in a Trumper county. My husband and I went to Whole Foods today and, as you'd expect in Whole Foods, most people were complying with wearing masks (Whole Foods had a big sign stating masks were required). However there were a few not complying, maybe 20%? In looking around every single person not wearing a mask was white, male, and middle-aged (middle-aged being 40's to 50's). I mean, every single one.

Now, go to a Walmart in my area and you're going to see maybe 50% compliance, about 70% white males and the other 30% white females. But largely white middle-aged men.

Curious if others are observing the same trend?

Good news for Omicron? UK may release new report confirming milder illness

Long thread but worth reading. UK is seeing milder cases too--not as in "no big deal" mild, but milder than Delta.

I know, I know...that doesn't mean we're out of the woods and I'm not downplaying it--just thought this was potentially good news especially for those of us vax'd and boosted. I still mask as I always have, and will continue to do so.

This is how the media stokes fear with blatantly hyperbolized (and inaccurate) headlines

The headline reads "Several California Children sick after receiving wrong dose of COVID Vaccine".

Grabs your attention, right? Then as you read through the article you see the 14 children were given the adult dose of the COVID Vaccine by accident. Of those 14 children, only two were reported as "staying home due to stomaches".

Also, further down in the article it states:

"Chin-Hong says during clinical trials, kids were given 10, 20, and the adult dose of 30 micrograms. He says negative effects in those higher doses were not seen."

The 14 children were given 20 micrograms. Those doses were included in the clinical trial with no negative effects.

How does 2 children being kept home with stomaches become "several California children sick after receiving wrote does of COVID vaccine"???

Disgusting.

EDIT: I originally wrote that the children were given the adult dose of the COVID vaccine but in re-reading the article they were given 20 micrograms and the adult dose is 30 micrograms. Again, the clinical trials tested 10 , 20, and 30 micrograms in children with no ill effects. I'm assuming they went with the lowest dose that could achieve proper immunity.

Neighbor's 11-year old developed MIS from a mild case of COVID

My neighbor's 11-year old son, who was an extremely active and healthy 11-year old, started spiking fevers of up to 104 about 4 weeks after he recovered from a very mild case of COVID. The fevers would come and go, but he kept gradually getting worse. They ran some tests and saw his creatinine levels were very high. After going in and out of the hospital, tests and more tests, his kidneys continued to get worse. They finally diagnosed him with multisystem inflammatory syndrome, mostly likely caused by his COVID infection.

He's back in the hospital where they are putting him on IV steroids in the hopes of saving his kidneys. His mom wasn't vaccinated but she got vaxxed as soon as her son started showing symptoms of MIS. That was what it took to convince her. Her son didn't get COVID from her, he got it from school, but she's still feeling horrible guilt.

All these parents who are saying they won't allow their kids to have an "experimental vaccine" are playing with fire.

High School crowd yell disgusting slurs at female goalie

Has anyone seen this? (I apologize if it’s already been posted). How was this game not stopped? In one of the comments a former resident of this area said it’s a very heavy Trump area. That would make sense as to why no adults did anything. Even so it’s enraging.

Why I'm not a superfan of AOC

I ran across a tweet from AOC demanding that the Chair of NY Democrats, Jay Jacobs, should resign over his "disgusting comments comparing a single Black Mother who won a historic election to David Duke."

https://twitter.com/AOC/status/1450531102058328072?s=20

This piqued my interest so I found a quote of what he said and he absolutely did nothing of the sort. AOC has been a champion of India Walton, the candidate that AOC claims Jay Jacobs compared to David Duke. Jay Jacobs chose not to endorse Inda Walton despite her winning the primary. I have no idea why, but the statement he made which AOC is trying to spin is basically saying he doesn't have to endorse someone just because they are a Democrat. AOC is now calling for his resignation and contorting his statement to make her case. That's a GOP thing, to stir up hatred and anger to get an outcome. I do not like this at all and it makes me suspect of AOC's motives from here on out.

We should be better than this.

Below is a tweet that includes the statement Jay Jacobs made.

We need to have an honest discussion about the obesity epidemic in the US--especially kids

There was a headline today regarding a 10-year old girl, Theresa Sperry, who died of COVID after only 5 days. The article stated that Theresa was a healthy child with no underlying conditions. I have to admit one of my first thoughts was "but was she obese"? Most of the younger children I've read about who are dying from COVID are obese. It's an epidemic but I don't feel like we talk about it enough because it goes in the category of "fat-shaming". If someone has a heart condition, is it "heart health shaming"? If someone is immunosuppressed is it "immunosuppression shaming"?

When I was growing up there would be maybe 1 overweight child in my class. Now it seems to be at least 50%.

I know a lot of this has to do with kids staying indoors and playing on their smartphones, online games, laptops versus years ago when kids would be outside playing all day until they heard their parents calling them home for dinner. Eating healthy is expensive, getting kids to exercise isn't as easy as it sounds--organized sports is one way but it's not always accessible or affordable.

I don't know what the answer is but it needs to be addressed as these kids are being set up for a lifetime of health issues. Michelle Obama tried, but there needs to be a much larger and concerted effort if we're going to turn things around.
