My adult son (he's 20) moved in

So, my wife and I bought a condo in a 1929 building that’s a 10-minute walk from Lake Michigan.

It’s a big one- bedroom with a formal dining room. Places we could afford seemed have either a second bedroom or a dining room, not both. And this place has a dining room we love.

But my son’s eBay reselling business didn’t work out as planned. He’s now in debt and couldn’t renew his lease without making things worse. So, now he has a job. But our beautiful dining room now has a queen-sized, a dresser, a desk and my son’s ridiculously large TV. Sigh. No more dinner parties for now.

Here’s the kicker. My 94-year-old father-in-law wants my son to move in with him, where he’d have his own room, rent free, for as long as he likes (My MIL died several months ago and the old guy wants company.) I thought that was a very generous offer.

My son appreciates the offer. But he says says that apartment (which is within walking distance of our place) reminds him too much of his grandmother, who we all miss terribly. He says it’d be sad and weird living there. Maybe it would.

I’m not sure what to do. The kid is not in college and doesn’t want to be. And he refuses to live with roommates, which means paying higher rent. His last apartment was tiny and not great.

He does make decent wages. But he doesn’t have a solid plan other than paying off his credit cards and figuring it out after that.

Also, while he and I get along well and spend a lot of time together, he and his mom have a strained relationship. The bicker a fair amount. That’s stressful on my wife and me.

I guess I don’t really expect advice. But if you have read this far, thanks for “listening.”

Howard Stern for president?

Howard Stern might run for president, presumably as a Democrat. Imagine what it would be like if he and Trump were candidates in the general election.

My inner agent of chaos kinda wants to see that happen. But… no.

Could the proto-fascist threat be a drag on the economy?

This country endured an attempt to overthrow the government. And now, Republicans and proto-fascist movements like the Oath Keepers are constantly threatening to launch a civil war.

Does it occur to anyone that the threat of a right-wing, authoritarian armed rebellion might have an impact on investor sentiment — especially among foreign investors?

It’d be hard to quantify. But I don’t see how our current political instability wouldn’t have an economic impact.

Thoughts?

Sorry about that.

I started a conversation in the Lounge that should have gone somewhere else. My apologies.

Here’s a cat picture.

A decent summary of how Trumpers talk on Facebook about gasoline prices

Why won’t Biden move his gasoline price control lever back to “cheap?”

It’s right there under the Resolute Desk. He could reset it at any time.

Trump would never have moved the lever to the “expensive” setting. But Biden is controlled by The Woke Mob®️!

Stop the steal! Build the wall! Secure the border!

People keep asking why evangelicals love a toad like Trump.

There are lot’s of reasons, but I think the core of it is this:

The central concept of the evangelical movement—the born-again experience—is easily manipulated.

Trump presents himself as recently “born again,” so nothing he did before that matters. I was imbedded in that movement. I heard people brag about how bad they used to be. The more depraved they were before conversion, the better their “testimony” would be.

Trump kind of did that. He admitted to having a crazy life —while never proving details of course. Grifter ministers amplified that by calling Trump a “baby Christian,” still new to the faith.

Evangelicals were titillated by imagining the decadence of Trump’s “former” life. At the same time Trump flattered them by implying that he’d given it all up to become just like them. It was powerful bullshit.

Evangelicals marched to the polls to vote for the new, “born again” Trump they wanted to see. Not only was he just like them, he gave them permission to express their deep anger at those who weren’t.

The Trump show is intoxicating to some people. But like other hard drugs, it’s a bad idea to shoot Trumpism into your veins too often.

Ya know what today is?

Today is Juneteenth, Father’s Day and, for my wife and me, our 29th wedding anniversary.

Much to celebrate.

Meet Coltrane

Roughly 4 years old. Was in a shelter twice. He’s not a cat for everyone. But we love him.

Hello again

Hi. I was away for quite a while. I just couldn’t face many online political discussions during the Trump years. I was feeling cynical and beaten down. But I’m back now.

I’m still a writer / editor living in Chicago. About 10 months ago, my wife and I moved into a modest condo near Lake Michigan. And we adopted a cat, who is a handful, but lifts my spirits with his cat-ness.

My main aggravation now is that I really need to leave my job. But I’m finding it hard to get HR people to take a chance on a late-50s male like myself. I keep getting disqualified from positions that look like a perfect fit.

But, in general, life is good. How is everyone?
