Amazon's warehouse workers sound alarms about coronavirus spread

Source: Washington Post

As Amazon sales surge from shoppers stocking up on consumer staples, the e-commerce giant’s warehouse workers are raising alarms that the company is not doing enough to protect them from the novel coronavirus.
Warehouse workers in Spain and Italy have tested positive for the virus, while workers in New York and Chicago told The Washington Post that Amazon isn’t taking enough precautions as orders mount. Some said workers were sent home only after they had coughs, and signs were posted advising workers to wash their hands.

But in interviews, warehouse workers in the United States and Europe say they worry their workplaces aren’t safe enough and could contribute to the spread of the virus. More than 1,500 workers from around the world have signed a petition that calls on the company to take additional steps to ensure the safety in their workplace.
...

“We are going to great lengths to keep the buildings extremely clean and help employees practice important precautions such as social distancing and other measures,” Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Cheeseman said. “Those who don’t want to come to work are welcome to use paid and unpaid time off options and we support them in doing so.”

Any disruption to Amazon’s ability to deliver goods could affect countless customers, who have turned to the company in recent days to bring canned food, cleaning supplies and more to their homes so they don’t need to venture out to physical retailers and potentially spread the virus. Shoppers have turned to Amazon so frequently since the outbreak of the virus that the company has acknowledged it’s out of stock of some household staples, and its deliveries are taking longer than usual.

It may not just be workers’ safety at stake. Recent research shows the coronavirus can potentially remain viable — capable of infecting a person — for up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to three days on plastic and stainless steel, though covid-19 has primarily spread through direct person-to-person contact.

Taking precautions when handling packaging seems in order. Especially when the virus spreads to a larger % of the population.

As an older person doing strict social distancing, the possibility of the virus spreading thru Amazon deliveries has been a concern.

Canada to bar entry to non-citizens and permanent residents

Source: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC)

Canada is barring entry to all travellers who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today.
There will be exceptions for air crew and diplomats.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is stepping up manpower, educational materials and screening measures at airports and all other entry points to Canada to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Beginning today, all incoming travellers, no matter where their country of origin is, will be asked if they are experiencing symptoms such as coughing, difficulty breathing or fever. They also will need to acknowledge that they are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days if arriving from any international location.

All travellers seeking entry into Canada will have to answer the health screening questions and CBSA officers will be on the lookout for visible signs of illness. They will refer any traveller who they suspect of being ill, regardless of how the traveller answered the health screening question, to public health authorities for further evaluation.

Fauci: Americans are 'going to have to hunker down significantly more' to fight coronavirus

Source: NBC News

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told NBC's "Meet the Press" Sunday that Americans "should be prepared that they're going to have to hunker down significantly more than we as a country are doing" to fight the growing COVID-19 outbreak.

Asked if the U.S. should consider a 14-day national shutdown similar to those in Europe, he said, "I would prefer as much as we possibly could ... I think we should really be overly aggressive and get criticized for over-reacting."

The United States has surpassed 2,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, though the actual number of those infected could be much larger because testing isn't yet widespread. At least 60 people have died in the U.S. due to complications from the virus.
Full coverage of the coronavirus outbreak

Fauci said that the goal now is to "blunt" the curve of confirmed cases, keeping the number of those infected low enough so as to not overwhelm the U.S. hospital system. "If you let the curve get up there, then the entire society is going to be hit," he said.

Coronavirus burial pits so vast they're visible from space

Source: Washington Post

Iranian authorities began digging a pair of trenches for victims just days after the government disclosed the initial outbreak. Together, their lengths are that of a football field.

By Erin Cunningham and Dalton Bennett March 12, 2020

Two days after Iran declared its first cases of the novel coronavirus — in what would become one of the largest outbreaks of the illness outside of China — evidence of unusual activity appeared at a cemetery near where the infections emerged.

At the Behesht-e Masoumeh complex in Qom, about 80 miles south of Tehran, the excavation of a new section of the graveyard began as early as Feb. 21, satellite images show, and then rapidly expanded as the virus spread. By the end of the month, two large trenches — their lengths totaling 100 yards — were visible at the site from space.

According to expert analysis, video testimony and official statements, the graves were dug to accommodate the rising number of virus victims in Qom.

Please contact your members of Congress and Senators and demand a coherent , organized response to the pandemic outbreak here in the US.

Trump clearly is not doing enough.

Keeping my Pledge: Losing Michigan, Sanders should drop Out.

Last week, I stated that who ever lost the Michigan Primary should drop out since winning the industrial Mid-West was vital to defeating Trump.

It is clear tonight that Joe Biden will win Michigan and hence is our best bet to win back those Blue Wall states that Trump grabbed in 2016. This is a key step to victory in the General Election.

I pledged last week that I would support the winner of Michigan going forward and ask the loser to drop out of the primary race.

So, it's time for Bernie Sanders to drop out of the race and allow the party to coalesce behind our future nominee, Joe Biden, as soon as possible.

Congratulations to all the long time Biden supporters.

Along with you, I am wishing Joe the best and will be looking forward to him being our next President.

Shocking First Hand Corona Virus report from Italy

This was re-tweeted by Sahil Kapur from NBC News. It's a very disturbing series of tweets describing the situation in the hospitals in the Lombardy region in northern Italy.

After hearing Trump give imbecilic interviews on the news the last few days, I can't help but feel we, as a nation, are not prepared for what is coming our way with this pandemic virus.

Please contact your members of Congress and Senators and demand concrete, organized efforts immediately.

Should the loser of the March 10th Michigan Primary drop out? Bluewater calls you out!

Everyone thinks the Michigan Primary will be an important bellwether for those industrial Midwest states that put Trump over the top in 2016.

But are people here willing to say that the loser of the March 10th Michigan Primary should drop out?

Oh, I'm sure, AFTER the voting many people will be calling for the loser to do just that. But how many people are willing to do that before hand?

Well, I am. I will be that Profile in Courage type of person.

Once the winner of the March 10th Michigan Primary is announced, I will be changing my preferred candidate selection to the winner and calling for any and all losing candidates to drop out of the race.

Now, I realize that I am a rare individual with immense insight and intestinal fortitude, but I call on ALL Duers to take the pledge I just made. Call for the loser(s) of the March 10th Michigan Primary to drop out.

Do it. Do it for the good of the Democratic Party.

( Yes, that's all NEUROMARKETING meant to influence your subconscious... lol the hyperbole, the taunts, the dares, the call to put it all on the line..)

Whose with me?

Show of hands, please!

I'll bookmark this thread for future reference.

G. Elliott Morris: Bernie's strength was coming from a fractured field.

https://twitter.com/gelliottmorris/status/1235236919166017537

Morris is one of the rising stars among data journalists, and I have posted his analyses many times in the past.

I don't always agree with his opinions, but when he sticks to the data, he is one of the best.

He's been saying that the data shows the 2020 General Election is going to be very close and that the Democratic nominee will have to win back swing voters to prevail.

That said, it will be interesting to see a Biden vs Sanders face-off in Michigan on March 10th.
