The new ABC News/Washington Post poll is the latest to show former Vice President Joe Biden on a roll.
He leads President Donald Trump 55% to 40% among registered voters. (It's a slightly tighter 54% to 44% among likely voters). The poll comes on top of other surveys last week from Fox News, NBC News/Wall Street Journal and Quinnipiac University giving Biden anywhere from an 8 to 15 point advantage.
Biden's advantage in the polls is most evident in the suburbs, where he is earning a historic amount of support for a Democrat.
Biden is up by a 52% to 43% margin among suburban voters in the ABC News/Washington Post poll.
Other polls in the last month show Biden in as good or even better position among suburban voters. The latest Fox News poll has Biden with 49% to 38% lead. Quinnipiac University poll puts Biden ahead by a 56% to 34% margin with suburbanites. The NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll has Biden beating Trump 60% to 35% among suburban voters.
Our early June CNN poll had Biden with a 14-point lead in the suburbs.
In the average of all the polls, Biden's ahead by more than 15 points with suburban voters. This is a historic margin, if it holds.
The fact that Biden is doing so well in the suburbs shouldn't be a surprise. The suburbs are a bellwether vote of sorts in our current political environment. That is, the suburban vote mirrors the national vote closer than the urban or rural vote.

With coronavirus antibodies fading fast, vaccine hopes fade, too
Disturbing new revelations that permanent immunity to the coronavirus may not be possible have jeopardized vaccine development and reinforced a decision by scientists at UCSF and affiliated laboratories to focus exclusively on treatments.
Several recent studies conducted around the world indicate that the human body does not retain the antibodies that build up during infections, meaning there may be no lasting immunity to COVID-19 after people recover.
Strong antibodies are also crucial in the development of vaccines. So molecular biologists fear the only way left to control the disease may be to treat the symptoms after people are infected to prevent the most debilitating effects, including inflammation, blood clots and death.
“I just don’t see a vaccine coming anytime soon,” said Nevan Krogan, a molecular biologist and director of UCSF’s Quantitative Biosciences Institute, which works in partnership with 100 research laboratories. “People do have antibodies, but the antibodies are waning quickly.” And if antibodies diminish, “then there is a good chance the immunity from a vaccine would wane too.”
The latest bad news came from scientists at King’s College of London, whose study of 90 COVID-19 patients in the United Kingdom found antibody levels peaked three weeks after the onset of symptoms and then dramatically declined. Potent antibodies were found in 60% of the patients, according to the study, but only 17% retained the same potency three months later. In some cases, the antibodies disappeared completely, said the study which was published as a preprint Saturday, meaning it has not yet been peer-reviewed.
The report is the latest in a growing chain of evidence that immunity to COVID-19 is short-lived.

There is still hope that the remaining antibodies will bestow some immunity, but infectious disease specialists around the world were surprised and discouraged by the rapid reduction observed in the studies. If the numbers continue dropping after three months, it could mean people will be susceptible to infection by the coronavirus year after year.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg announces cancer recurrence, will remain on the Supreme Court

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Friday she is undergoing chemotherapy to treat a recurrence of cancer. The treatment is yielding "positive results." The liberal justice, 87, said she remains "fully able" to continue in her post.
Owing to her age and long medical history, Ginsburg's health is the subject of widespread interest given her status as a liberal icon. The prospect that President Donald Trump could name a third justice to the Supreme Court would also be a major election issue.
Earlier this week, Ginsburg was treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after having a fever and chills, and undergoing an "endoscopic procedure to clean out a bile duct stent that was placed last August," the court said at the time.
Ginsburg said her cancer treatment is unrelated to this week's incident.
The court ended its term last week with a ruling upholding the ability of Congress and a New York prosecutor to attempt to obtain Trump's financial records. But the court this week has also ruled on two death penalty appeals and a Florida voting access case.
Ginsburg was also in the hospital in early May. At that time, she participated in oral arguments from her hospital bed, asking questions in a case concerning Obamacare's so-called contraceptive mandate.
Friday's statement indicates that the pancreatic cancer Ginsburg was treated for in 2009 has returned again, this time in her liver, and that she tried one of the new immunotherapies for cancer, but it failed to shrink the tumors. It is not liver cancer.
Gemcitabine is a standard chemotherapy treatment that is a mainstay for pancreatic cancer that has spread.

Nearly One-Third Of Florida Children Tested For COVID-19 Test Positive

Nearly one-third of children who have been tested for the coronavirus in Florida have tested positive, according to data from the state’s Department of Health that comes amid ongoing debate and uncertainty over whether schools will reopen this fall.
Of the 54,022 people under the age of 18 who have been tested for COVID-19 in Florida, 16,797 of them, or roughly 31%, have tested positive, data released Friday shows. In comparison, roughly 11% of everyone in the state who has been tested for the virus — roughly 2.8 million people — has tested positive.
Nearly half of the state’s positive cases among children were in the counties of Broward, Dade, Hillsborough and Palm Beach.
Cases throughout the Sunshine State have risen at alarming rates in recent weeks. On Thursday the state set a new one-day coronavirus death record while also reporting nearly 14,000 new cases of COVID-19 ― the second-highest daily total that the state has seen. Its highest total reported last weekend set a national record.
Amid this growth, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) has continued to push for schools to reopen this fall, with him on Tuesday telling mayors in south Florida — the state’s hardest-hit area for cases — that doing so is low-risk.

The data rolls in that children can get Covid-19 at a high rate.
Does anyone rationally think those children would not also spread it as well?

Will Trump try to self-pardon?
President Donald Trump has used his pardon power sparingly, but overwhelmingly to benefit his friends and to protect his own interests. Former George W. Bush Administration official Jack Goldsmith recently analyzed Trump's pardons for Lawfare and concluded that "no president in American history comes close to matching Trump's systematically self-serving use of the pardon power."
Indeed, as Trump nears the end of his first (and perhaps only) term in office, he has wielded the pardon power more boldly than ever. Even by his own established standards of cronyism, Trump broke new ground last week by commuting the sentence of his longtime political adviser Roger Stone -- for crimes that Stone committed to protect Trump.

Now, there's only one remaining line that Trump has not yet crossed. Brace yourself because it might well happen soon: the first-ever presidential self-pardon. Mechanically, Trump would have to issue such a pardon while he still holds office. And the pardon would need to give him coverage for anything he has done in the past. It would be as if Richard Nixon -- rather than resigning and receiving a blanket pardon from his successor, Gerald Ford -- simply tried to pardon himself on his way out of the White House.
Trump has ample incentive to preemptively save his own hide with a pardon (or, at least, to try). Although current Justice Department policy counsels against indicting a sitting president, the memo setting forth the policy notes repeatedly that a president can be indicted after leaving office. Special Counsel Robert Mueller pointedly stated in his report and Congressional testimony that a president can be indicted after leaving office.
Would a presidential self-pardon be lawful? The short answer is we don't know for sure, because no president has ever tried it. The Constitution itself does not specify either way and there is no statute or case law on the issue. But you can already see the battle lines forming.
Trump certainly believes he can pardon himself. He tweeted in June 2018, "As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong?" Indeed, some legal scholars believe that the President can issue a self-pardon, pointing to the text of the Constitution itself -- which places no such limit on the pardon power.
