Pressley: Democrats don't need 'any more black faces that don't want to be a black voice'

Source: Hill

BY REBECCA KLAR - 07/14/19 03:46 PM EDT

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) reportedly said Democrats don't need "any more black faces that don't want to be a black voice" during a liberal Netroots Nation conference on Sunday, a comment that comes as racial politics threaten to divide the party.

The Washington Post reports Pressley said she's not interested in bringing "a chair to an old table."

“This is the time to shake that table. ... We don’t need any more brown faces that don’t want to be a brown voice,” Pressley reportedly said during the event. “We don’t need any more black faces that don’t want to be a black voice.”

Pressley's spokeswoman, Lina Francis, told the Post the congresswoman was making the point that “diversity at the table doesn’t matter if there’s not real diversity in policy.” The Hill has reached out to Pressley's office.

Pressley's comments followed a tumultuous week of Democratic infighting, as establishment Democrats continue to clash with a new wave of elected progressives in the party.

Lufthansa CEO sees no 'Greta Effect' on passenger numbers

Source: Reuters

JULY 14, 2019 / 5:37 AM

ZURICH (Reuters) - German airline Lufthansa expects passenger numbers to rise about 4% this year, its chief executive told a newspaper, playing down talk that public support for teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg might be curbing air travel.

“At this time we don’t see restraint - in fact, the opposite,” Carsten Spohr told the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper in the interview published on Sunday.

“In comparison to last year, already a record year, we’re expecting passenger growth of about 4 percent, (Lufthansa unit) Swiss International Air Lines is also showing growth. The discussion of climate change is not leading to restraint with bookings. People want to fly.”

Media reports have suggested a “Greta effect” might curb demand for air travel, referring to the 16-year-old who has gained global attention for her efforts to convince people to reduce carbon-emitting activities.

Starbucks Apologizes After 6 Police Officers Were Asked To Leave An Arizona Store

Source: HuffPost

Starbucks has issued an apology after six police officers were asked to leave one of the franchise’s stores in Tempe, Arizona, on July 4 because a customer complained of not feeling “safe” with them there.

The officers were drinking coffee at the Starbucks before starting their shifts when an employee, who knew one of the officers because he was a regular, asked them to move out of the customer’s line of sight or leave, according to the Tempe Officers Association.

“This treatment of public safety workers could not be more disheartening,” the union said. “While the barista was polite, making such a request at all was offensive. Unfortunately, such treatment has become all too common in 2019.”

Starbucks on Sunday issued an apology to the Tempe Police Department and called the incident “completely unacceptable.”

If the customer was Hispanic, I don't blame 'em for being scared of Arizona cops.

The lady who first told me about DU told me that Star Members could start threads before they had racked up 10 posts. So I kicked in a couple bucks and am now trying it out. If you're reading this, she was correct. If not, well, it's not the first time a woman has led me on!
