Small business owner: The looters who broke into my store weren't protesting Floyd death

My father founded our family pharmacy the year I was born, 1955. Originally, we were located near the White House until we moved to Upper Northwest Washington, D.C., right near the border of Maryland and the capital. We also expanded into groceries.

My father founded our family pharmacy the year I was born, 1955. Originally, we were located near the White House until we moved to Upper Northwest Washington, D.C., right near the border of Maryland and the capital. We also expanded into groceries.

The night of Sunday, May 31, was a nightmare.

It was the third night of protests in the city when someone threw a chair from the patio set outside through our shop window. My son and I found it and we tried to board up the window as best we could but the professional crews were in frantic demand. We had called for help, but so much was going on that we needed to secure the window ourselves. The police were spread very thin, driving up and down our avenue in emergency vehicles.

Halsey Reflects on Being 'White Passing' as Biracial Woman: 'I'm Not Susceptible to the Violence'

On Wednesday, the singer — whose father is black and mother is white — spoke out after a Twitter user accused her of "never claiming her black side" in a since-deleted tweet.

"I'm white passing. it’s not my place to say 'we.' it’s my place to help. i am in pain for my family, but nobody is gonna kill me based on my skin color," she replied. "I've always been proud of who I am but it'd be an absolute disservice to say 'we' when I'm not susceptible to the same violence."

"I'm white-passing. I’ve accepted that about myself and have never tried to control anything about black culture that’s not mine," she said, telling the outlet that she still strongly identifies as a black woman.
"I look like a white girl, but I don’t feel like one. I'm a black woman," the singer explained. "So it’s been weird navigating that. When I was growing up I didn't know if I was supposed to love TLC or Britney."
Throughout the last week, Halsey has been actively protesting with the Los Angeles community amid demonstrations over racial injustice and police brutality in response to the killing of George Floyd.

While protesting, the singer has been continuously updating her fans and followers about her experience at the rallies, including when police shot at her with rubber bullets.

SF couple get engaged on the Golden Gate Bridge during protest

During the historic protest on the Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday, in which thousands marched to demonstrate against the police killing of George Floyd, a man suddenly got down on one knee and asked his partner of five years to marry him.

Around halfway across the 1.7-mile span of the bridge, Quinlin Messenger popped the question and Carrie Fagan Montgomery said "yes."

The joyous moment was captured by the cheering crowd on social media.

Police are using rubber bullets on protestors that can maim or kill

In cities across the country, police departments have attempted to quell unrest spurred by the death of George Floyd by firing rubber bullets into crowds, even though five decades of evidence shows such weapons can disable, disfigure and even kill.

In addition to rubber bullets — which often have a metal core — police have used tear gas, flash-bang grenades, pepper spray gas and projectiles to control crowds of demonstrators demanding justice for 46-year-old George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck, while other officers restrained his body.

(COMMENT: Some folks here may not like Kanye, but you've got to give him kudos for this!)

Kanye West Launches College Fund for George Floyd’s Daughter, Reveals $2 Million in Additional Donations

It’s been nearly 10 days since the May 25 death of George Floyd at the hand of a Minneapolis police officer, during which time massive protests against police violence have taken place across the country. But while tens of thousands have taken to the streets to express their anger at the systemic racism that has gripped the United States, the usually vocal Kanye West has been surprisingly quiet.

Today the rapper revealed via a representative that he has donated $2 million so far to charities associated with Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd and has set up a college fund to cover tuition for Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter Gianna. In addition, the rapper has pledged to cover legal costs for the Arbery and Taylor families. And in his hometown of Chicago, he’ll also be aiding black-owned businesses with financial contributions.

The Diana Award stands with the Black Lives Matter movement. The charity—an organization founded in Princess Diana's memory, which celebrates young people's power to make a difference—posted on Instagram and Twitter about the cause.

The charity shared a cartoon, which shows a cop asking a young Black boy what he wants to be when he grows up, and the boy thinking in response, "Alive?" Alongside that image, the Diana Award wrote, "We will not be silent. We will continue to pursue a world where every young person, irrespective of the colour of their skin, fulfills their potential without the fear of discrimination. We see you. We stand with you. #BlackLivesMatter."

Paul McCartney Reminiscences on Beatles Refusing to Play for Segregated Audience in 1964

[SNIP]

McCartney went on to reveal that during a trip to the United States in 1964, the Beatles had been scheduled to play a segregated show, which they refused to do.

"In 1964 The Beatles were due to play Jacksonville in the US and we found out that it was going to be to a segregated audience. It felt wrong. We said 'We're not doing that!' and the concert we did do was to their first non-segregated audience," he continued. "We then made sure this was in our contract. To us it seemed like common sense."

White Women, I'm Glad You're Showing Up. But I'm Not Sure I Trust You Just Yet

White Women, I’m Glad You’re Showing Up. But I’m Not Sure I Trust You Just Yet

I moved to Los Angeles in 1992, the year a jury with no Black people on it acquitted the four policemen who had administered that horrific, now-infamous beating to Rodney King. I was 25 years old and had never before seen anything like what I was witnessing; the world was on fire.

A man with a video camera just happened to have captured King’s beating from his apartment balcony across the street from where the LAPD stopped King’s car. It was a rarity for the time ― this was pre-social media ― so the world was shocked to see the proof of the savagery that Black people had been screaming about for decades.

Some of us, for the first time in our lives, felt a semblance of vindication — for finally, there was evidence that could not be disputed. It was on film, it was on the news, and it was on the front page of every newspaper. I felt the collective anger and sorrow of my Black brothers and sisters. Still, surprisingly, at the time, I felt hostility-tinged apathy from a number of the white people in my life.

With a few exceptions, these white people were resistant to discussing the real causes of our civil unrest with me: slavery, lynchings, Jim Crow, segregation, the war on drugs, police violence against Black men, systemic racism, privatized prisons, etc. But they were annoyingly vocal in their support for the “real” victim, Reginald Denny, the white truck driver who was ripped from the cab of his truck at Florence and Normandy and beaten nearly to death during the riots.

Biden embraces healer-in-chief role in return to campaign trail

[SNIP]

But Biden is also demonstrating an awareness -- as a white man whose political life began at the end of the civil rights movement -- of the perils of making this moment about himself. He has spent the last week in listening mode, calling African American scholars and meeting with black organizers, faith leaders and local officials.

"I'm a white man. I think I understand, but I can't feel it," Biden said in a virtual town hall Thursday. "I don't know what it's like to be a black man walking down the street and be accosted; to be a black man walking down the street and be arrested; to be a black man walking down the street and, God forbid, something worse happen to me."

Why brands like Oreo are cutting back on wacky flavors right now

-

Why brands like Oreo are cutting back on wacky flavors right now

Shoppers are stocking up on items to eat at home, and they're finding less variety on grocery store shelves.

That's partly because items are selling out more quickly than they used to. But it's also because major food companies — the ones that make our cookies, chips and canned soups — have been paring down their product offerings.

When stay-at-home orders went into effect this spring, Mondelez, General Mills, PepsiCo, J.M. Smucker, Campbell, Coca-Cola and others saw a massive spike in demand for some products. To help meet that increase, they sped up production lines on their most popular items -— and that meant cutting back on more fringe offerings. That translates to fewer varieties of Jif peanut butter, Oreo cookies and Frito-Lay chips at the store.

The reason behind the move: Manufacturing plants for major food companies typically have to pause their production lines to switch out the product and packaging when they go from making one variety of cereal, for example, to another.

"There's significant time required to change lines," said Jonathon Nudi, General Mill's group president of North America retail, during a March conference call with analysts. He added that making fewer products is one way to simplify the supply chain.
