What if the next Donald Trump is, well, Donald Trump?

-

What if the next Donald Trump is, well, Donald Trump?

Since the moment late on November 8, 2016 when it became clear that Donald Trump would be the 45th president of the United States, many Democrats have been counting the days until November 3, 2020 -- the day that they believe he will be voted out of office.

Which may well happen! There's no question that Trump is an underdog for a second term right now, with former Vice President Joe Biden leading in key swing states as well as nationally.

But even if Democrats do get their wish in 144 days, it's not at all clear that they (or the country) will be rid of Trump -- not just as entity in our culture, but potentially as a presidential candidate. Again.

Trump would be entirely within his Constitutional rights to do so. While a president can only serve two consecutive four-year terms (although Trump has "jokingly" floated breaking that limit!), there's no law against a president coming back to run for the office after losing a bid for a second term.

Trump says he'll leave office peacefully if he loses in November

Trump says he'll leave office peacefully if he loses in November

President Donald Trump sought to brush aside fears he might not leave office willingly if November’s election doesn’t go his way.

“Certainly, if I don't win, I don't win,” he told Fox News’ Harris Faulkner in an interview that aired Friday. If he doesn’t win the election, Trump continued, “you go on, do other things.”

Though the president has never given any serious indication that he might not leave office if he were to lose reelection, his comments aired Friday appear to be the first time he has publicly committed to doing so.

Still, he told Faulker that if he loses, “I think it would be a very bad thing for our country.”

Faulkner posed the query after former Vice President Joe Biden, Trump’s likely Democratic rival in November, raised the prospect during a TV appearance on Wednesday.

Chicago's police union president says officers who kneel with protesters could be kicked out

(NOTE: I've been told that the "Fraternal Order of Police" is not a union.)

Chicago's police union president says officers who kneel with Black Lives Matter protesters could be kicked out of the organization

John Catanzara, the new president of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police told Fox32 Chicago that he didn't believe the current Black Lives Matter protests that broke out after the death of George Floyd were the "time or place" to be kneeling.

"If you kneel, you'll be risking being brought up on charges and thrown out of the lodge," Catanzara, who has been in office for a month, told Fox32. "This was about defunding and abolishing the police officers. And you're going to take a knee for that? It's ridiculous."

Police have been photographed kneeling with protesters at demonstrations across the US in recent weeks, as tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets daily calling for police reform and the end of police violence. There have also been reports of police officers driving squad cars into crowds, attacking people with pepper spray and batons, and shooting rubber bullets at journalists and demonstrators.

Criminalization that never should have been: Cannabis

-

Criminalization that never should have been: Cannabis

Across the country, debates are taking place in living rooms, on television screens, and behind closed doors in Congress as to how to address the systemically disproportionate levels of police violence against black Americans. For some, these conversations have been happening for years, yet many other Americans are just now beginning to critically think about these issues for the first time.

As the House debates ways to reform policing in the United States, it's critical that we not only analyze the structures under which law enforcement operates, but also the extraordinary powers that they have been granted - powers that often provide them with the ability to interact with citizens whenever and wherever they please.

One common pretext provided by police for these citizen interactions is that they suspect that someone has either used or is in possession of marijuana. That is why Rep. Lou Correa (D-Calif.) has suggested the need to amend federal anti-marijuana laws during the recent hearing on policing practices.

Does an Exception Clause in the 13th Amendment Still Permit Slavery?

Does an Exception Clause in the 13th Amendment Still Permit Slavery?

[SNIP]

The 13th Amendment, ratified in 1865, says: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Scholars, activists and prisoners have linked that exception clause to the rise of a prison system that incarcerates black people at more than five times the rate of white people, and profits off of their unpaid or underpaid labor.

“What we see after the passage of the 13th Amendment is a couple of different things converging,” says Andrea Armstrong, a law professor at Loyola University in New Orleans. “First, the 13th Amendment text allows for involuntary servitude where convicted of a crime.” At the same time, “black codes” in the south created “new types of offenses, especially attitudinal offenses—not showing proper respect, those types of things.”

After the Civil War, new offenses like “malicious mischief” were vague, and could be a felony or misdemeanor depending on the supposed severity of behavior. These laws sent more black people to prison than ever before, and by the late 19th century the country experienced its first “prison boom,” legal scholar Michelle Alexander writes in her book The New Jim Crow.

“After a brief period of progress during Reconstruction, African Americans found themselves, once again, virtually defenseless,” Alexander writes. “The criminal justice system was strategically employed to force African Americans back into a system of extreme repression and control, a tactic that would continue to prove successful for generations to come.”

This Restaurant Is Changing Its Name After The Community Pointed Out That It's Actually A Racial Slur

A California restaurant is changing its name after community members pointed out the historical meaning behind it. Sambo's, a Santa Barbara, CA, pancake house, has replaced its sign with a message of peace and love while they decide on a new name.

According to CNN, the name "Sambo's" came from a combination of the two founders' names, Sam Battistone and Newell "Bo" Bohnett. Although it wasn't seemingly the original intent, the name term "sambo" has a racially charged past. The word was used as a stereotypical name for African-Americans in the book Uncle Tom's Cabin, although this connotation dates back to the 1700s. Today, the term is considered a slur for Black individuals.

A resident of the area, Rashelle Monet, brought up the issue to Chad Stevens, the current owner and grandson of the founder, KEYT reported. "Even though it didn't come from a bad place, it is still a very hurtful term for a lot of people," Monet told the outlet. "I understand it wasn't intentional. I am not saying that Sambo's and the owners are racist. I am saying the slur is racist."

Election 2020: The partisan chasm over 'systemic racism' is on full display

Election 2020: The partisan chasm over 'systemic racism' is on full display

The throngs of protesters demanding systemic changes in policing are marching directly into one of the deepest chasms between the two political parties.

The belief that widespread racism is no longer a problem in American society has become one of the core convictions uniting the modern Republican coalition, especially in the Donald Trump era, polls have found. Several academic studies found the belief that discrimination against minorities (and women) is no longer a problem was a far better predictor of support for Trump in 2016 than economic anxiety.

Democrats of all races, by contrast, are much more likely to say that discrimination against African Americans, including in their interactions with police, remains a structural feature of American society.

In surveys by the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute, Americans who support Trump were far more likely than those who don't to say that police shootings of black men are only isolated incidents and to claim that discrimination against whites is now as great a problem as bias against minorities.

Microsoft workers call on the company to drop its police contracts

As protests over police killings continue, hundreds of workers at Microsoft are calling for the company to cut ties with law enforcement customers and do more to show its commitment to anti-racism efforts.

In an email obtained by the tech publication OneZero, Microsoft workers called for the company to pull its contracts with the Seattle police department and other law enforcement groups, as well as to support defunding and demilitarizing the Seattle police department and encourage more donations to groups doing anti-racist work.

The letter begins by describing days of nonstop police presence and disruption. "Every passing day, we feel that our fellow coworkers, managers, and leaders who live miles away outside of Seattle are severely disconnected to the violent reality thousands of people have been facing every single day since last Saturday. 24/7 helicopter noise, teargassing, flashbanging, rubber bullets, gun shots, and vans/buses filled with armed law enforcement," the letter reads.

Terry Crews Says New Season of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Will 'Definitely' Cover Current Events

It seems that Jake Peralta and the 99 will be tackling topics of police brutality and racism when the NBC comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine goes back into production following the coronavirus pandemic. Star Terry Crews appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Monday where he discussed the state of current events in America and how it will pertain to the show's upcoming season.

When Meyers asked Crews if "the events of the day" would effect the next season, he replied, "Definitely."

"We actually all got on a Zoom call just the other day because of what's happening in this country. We were witnessing so many abuses of power," Crews said. "We had some somber talks and some really, really eye-opening conversation about how to handle this new season."
