How Life is Going to Change as America Collapses

How Life is Going to Change as America Collapses

What Will Everyday Life in a Collapsed America Be Like?

Umair Haque
Jul 10, 2018

Indulge me for a moment. Imagine, as I do, that America’s going to go right on collapsing. Who’s going to stop it? After all, in the last week alone, all three branches of government have been captured, at last, by extremists. The judiciary, with the nomination of a justice who’d overturn Roe vs Wade, taking the US back half a century. Congress, whose Senators happily tweeted independence day greetings from…Moscow. And, of course, the executive, in which a demagogue continued his assault on reason, democracy and truth.

All three branches of government captured mean that there are virtually no checks and balances left, save slender hope here or there, and so American collapse is likely to continue unabated. Into what? Into…well, no one knows. Theofascism, maybe. Klepto-authoritarianism, perhaps. Pick your poisons — now shake up the cocktail mixer. Something new, a new form of all the old diseases of the body politic, combined in a strange, novel, lethal way, most probably.

While we can’t say what the final form of American collapse will be yet, we can say life is going to change. Faster, harder, and nastier than you think. Here are five ways life is going to change under authoritarianism — and you’d be quite correct to notice, as you read, that they are ways in which life has already begun to change.

Donald Trump's 3rd State of the Union Address Tumbles in Broadcast TV Ratings

A Game show beat Trump's SOTU in the broadcast network ratings!

Donald Trump’s 3rd State of the Union Address Tumbles in Broadcast TV Ratings

Donald Trump’s State of the Union address was all anybody could talk about on Tuesday, but “Ellen’s Game of Games” showed up for NBC too.

This third SOTU from the 45th president of the United States of America is currently down 26% in Big-4 broadcast viewers from his second. According to early Nielsen returns, CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox drew a combined 16 million viewers for the 2020 address. That tally is preliminary, however, and should be considered subject to (upward) adjustment.

The comparable initial tally last year was 21.6 million across those four networks.

NBC was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and second in total viewers with an average of 4.4 million, according to preliminary numbers. “Ellen’s Game of Games” at 8 p.m. posted a 1.0/5 and 5 million viewers. At 9, the Trump address pulled in a 0.9/4 and and 4.4 million viewers.

Let's look at the differences between Bloomberg and Trump.

Trump comes from wealth. His father was a millionaire and his father's millions kept him out of trouble and got him through school. Furthermore, his father's millions is the only reason Trump has wealth today.

Michael Bloomberg's father was a book keeper for a dairy company. Michael Bloomberg's wealth was self obtained, not inherited.

Donald Trump is irreligious but feigns being a Christian.

Michael Bloomberg is Jewish and attends the Temple Emanu-El of New York.

A comparison of their wealth shows that Trump's *claimed* wealth makes him a relative pauper compared to Bloomberg, and this bothers Trump to a great extent.

Bloomberg has executive experience in politics, something which Trump never had and arguably still does not have.

Anybody else car to weigh in?

A note about abortion.

Abortion is a medical procedure.

When the state outlaws medical procedures, that's Socialized medicine on steroids.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Travesty in the Well of the House.

Homophobic Caucus Voter Wants Vote For Buttigieg Back After Finding Out He Is Gay

This disgusts me to no end.

WTF is she doing in the Democratic Party if she is this much of a bigot?

Iowa Caucus, strange game.

The only winning move is not to play.

How about a nice game of chess?

Threat against Adam Schiff

Threat against Adam Schiff

SCHIFF THREATENED… A man in Arizona has been accused by federal authorities of threatening to kill Congressman Adam Schiff, the lead prosecutor in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.

Court records show that Jan Peter Meister, a 52-year-old registered sex offender, told investigators he drunkenly left the threatening voicemail at Schiff’s Washington, D.C. office after watching Fox News and googling the congressman’s phone number.

“I'm gonna fucking blow your brains out you fucking piece of shit,” Meister allegedly said in part of the obscenity-filled voicemail.

A spokesman in Schiff’s office declined to comment when I reached out over the weekend. Meister’s attorney, Brad Roach, didn’t return a call seeking comment on Monday.

I Hereby Nominate Ending Iowa Caucuses As First in the Nation, and Replacing them with...

Michigan Primaries to be held before anybody else in January even if the national party has to pick up the tab.

Michigan has everything we need to pick a nominee.

Diversity
Swing State Status.
Small enough for underdogs to be competitive yet large enough to be incredibly informative early on.

DISCLAIMER: I have never lived in Michigan and have only traveled there once.

Just a Reminder of the fact that Caucuses are a relic of an agrarian past based in wealth.

It was originally designed for wealthy plantation owners so they could control who would show up and who could cast votes for candidates. Without a secret ballot, the plantation owners could control how all free white employees would vote in such events. Delegates eventually came down to how the richest white plantation owners wanted them to come out. This process moved to Iowa during western expansion.
