Coronavirus has killed 28,000 more than the official count — in just the last month: report
Published 1 min ago on April 22, 2020By Matthew Chapman

On Wednesday, The New York Times estimated that in the last month, 28,000 people died from coronavirus whose deaths haven’t been officially attributed to that cause.

“At least 28,000 more people have died during the coronavirus pandemic over the last month than the official Covid-19 death counts report, a review of mortality data in 11 countries shows — providing a clearer, if still incomplete, picture of the toll of the crisis,” said the report. “In the last month, far more people died in these countries than in previous years, The New York Times found. The totals include deaths from Covid-19 as well as those from other causes, likely including people who could not be treated as hospitals became overwhelmed.

Vaccine expert removed from federal post after daring to criticize coronavirus treatment pushed by Trump: report
Published 23 mins ago on April 22, 2020By Sky Palma

One of the nation’s leading vaccine researchers left his role as the director of the federal Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, it was reported this Tuesday.

The reason for the departure of Dr. Rick Bright was unknown and came at the worst possible time, considering that the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc across the U.S. Now the New York Times is reporting that Bright was removed from his post after he pushed for rigorous vetting of a coronavirus treatment embraced by Trump.

"I am speaking out because to combat this deadly virus, science — not politics or cronyism — has to lead the way,” he said."

AP-NORC poll: Few Americans support easing virus protections

https://www.wmcactionnews5.com/2020/04/22/ap-norc-poll-few-americans-support-easing-virus-protections/

By THOMAS BEAUMONT and HANNAH FINGERHUT | April 22, 2020 at 3:11 PM CDT - Updated April 22 at 3:11 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite pockets of attention-grabbing protests, a new survey finds Americans remain overwhelmingly in favor of stay-at-home orders and other efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus. A majority say it won’t be safe to lift such restrictions anytime soon, even as a handful of governors announce plans to ease within days the public health efforts that have upended daily life and roiled the global economy.

The survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds that more than a month after schoolyards fell silent, restaurant tables and bar stools emptied, and waves from a safe distance replaced hugs and handshakes, the country largely believes restrictions on social interaction to curb the spread of the virus are appropriate.

Only 12% of Americans say the measures where they live go too far. About twice as many people, 26%, believe the limits don’t go far enough. The majority of Americans — 61% — feel the steps taken by government officials to prevent infections of COVID-19 in their area are about right.

About 8 in 10 Americans say they support measures that include requiring Americans to stay in their homes and limiting gatherings to 10 people or fewer — numbers that have largely held steady over the past few weeks.

[Memphis!] Memphis-area private school announces reopening on Monday

https://wreg.com/news/memphis-private-school-announces-reopening-on-monday/

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A private school in southeast Shelby County announced it will reopen its doors for students and staff on Monday, April 27.

In a statement released to parents on Sunday, Christ Trinity Christian Academy said school closures in the state are not mandated by law and are simply a recommendation from Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.

“Our school programs are significantly smaller than Shelby County School system and are therefore able to practice social distancing and maintaining classrooms of 10 or less,” the school said in a letter to parents.

Snip. A parent commented:

“Why are they putting the teachers and children in danger? I just don’t understand their decision,” the parent said. “I feel like it’s a money-driven decision. That’s how I feel. They are still requiring monthly tuition. They’ve been out all this time, but they are still concerned about collecting money.”

2 cats in New York confirmed to have coronavirus, becoming first known infected pets in US

CNN) — Two cats in New York have been infected with the novel coronavirus, federal officials announced Wednesday. Both had mild respiratory symptoms and are expected to make a full recovery.

“These are the first pets in the United States to test positive,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday in a joint statement with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The agencies emphasized that there is no evidence pets play a role in spreading coronavirus in the United States. “There is no justification in taking measures against companion animals that may compromise their welfare,” they said.

The two cats were tested after they showed respiratory symptoms, according to the agencies, and they join the ranks of a lion and a tiger in New York who were previously confirmed to be infected.

Serious question about reusing N-95s

A couple of months before the pandemic hit the states, I purchased a small supply.

I read one post on DU from an EMT saying to not put used mask in plastic bag. Rather to put it in a paper bag & scrunch down the top. (Not sure why a paper bag was recommended.)

I read that after carefully sealing my mask into a zip lock baggie, which was worn into grocery store a day or so ago.

I am not a fan of reusing the masks, but does anyone here have any idea how long an N-95 has to remain in a sealed plastic bag before viable virus particles are deactivated?

I will not spray mask or wet it or nuke it as I need it to be fully functional if/when used again in the future.

When I purchased my small supply, I would never have guessed that the fed would be confisgating shipments, therefore, I need to plan ahead.

TY!

Corporate welfare is alive and well: Here are 4 appalling features of the taxpayer-funded coronavirus bailout
Published 6 hours ago on April 22, 2020By Robert Reich, AlterNet- Commentary

With the coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc on the global economy, here’s how massive corporations are shafting the rest of us in order to secure billions of dollars of taxpayer-funded bailouts.

The airline industry demanded a massive bailout of nearly $60 billion in taxpayer dollars, and ended up securing $50 billion – half in loans, half in direct grants that don’t need to be paid back.
