Sad news.
U.S. Plans to Execute Inmate Who Murdered Two Youth Ministers
Source: New York Times
A former Texas man convicted of murdering two youth ministers in 1999 was scheduled to become on Thursday the seventh federal inmate and the first Black man executed since Attorney General William P. Barr announced the resumption of federal executions last year.
The inmate, Christopher Andre Vialva, 40, was convicted in 2000 of carjacking and murdering the couple, Todd and Stacie Bagley, who were visiting Texas from Iowa and had just attended Sunday services, the Justice Department said.
Mr. Vialva was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Eastern time at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute, Ind., according to his lawyer, Susan M. Otto. The Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon denied Mr. Vialvas request for a stay of execution. He had also asked President Trump to commute his sentence to life in prison, Ms. Otto said.
Mr. Vialva, who was 19 when he murdered the Bagleys, was to be the first federal inmate executed for crimes committed as a teenager in more than 70 years, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, a nonprofit group that studies capital punishment.

NASA unveils $28 billion plan to land first woman, next man on the moon in 2024
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/09/22/nasa-artemis-unveils-28-b-plan-land-woman-moon-2024/5862755002/NASA has released its $28 billion plan to land the first woman and the next man on the moon in 2024.
The mission, part of NASA's Artemis plan, would mark the first time humans would land on the lunar surface since 1972. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said astronauts are returning to the moon "for scientific discovery, economic benefits and inspiration for a new generation of explorers."
With bipartisan support from Congress, our 21st century push to the Moon is well within Americas reach, Bridenstine said in a statement. As we build up a sustainable presence, were also building momentum toward those first human steps on the Red Planet.
Astronauts will travel to the lunar surface using NASA's powerful new rocket, the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft after a series of final tests this fall. The agency will then launch two test flights around the moon, one unmanned mission in 2021 and the second with a crew in 2023.

How *not* to carry concealed:
Oregon man shoots self in groin while showing off gun in supermarket checkout line, cops sayhttps://www.oregonlive.com/news/2020/09/oregon-man-shoots-self-in-groin-while-showing-off-gun-in-supermarket-checkout-line-cops-say.html
An Oregon man is on the mend after police say he accidentally shot himself in the groin while flaunting a concealed handgun at a Lincoln City supermarket.
The mishap occurred Sunday night when Nicholas J. Ellingford, 29, brandished his Glock 9mm in the checkout line at McKays Market on U.S. 101 and tried to show it off to a buddy, according to the Lincoln City Police Department.
Ellingford mistakenly pulled the trigger as he stuffed the piece back into his pants, police said. A bullet tore through the gunslingers groin and exited his thigh, just barely missing the mans femoral artery.
The gruesome wound required Ellingford to be airlifted to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, said police, which added that he did not have a concealed handgun license and could face criminal charges for his reckless behavior.
Let's see....
1) Pants carry.
2) Finger on the trigger while putting gun into pants.
3) Showing off "concealed" gun while in line at the checkout counter.
Millions of people practice safe, responsible concealed carrry every day. This guy, needless to say, wasn't one of them.
Have you considered buying guns in anticipation of violence from Trump supporters after his defeat?
A rather free wheeling discussion on this was locked in GD, with the statement that it belongs in this group.
Just for the record, while I'm already quite well armed, I see no reason for someone who otherwise has no interest in owning firearms to do for fear of roving gangs of disconsolate Trump supporters going on murder sprees after he loses the election, as the OP of the original thread clearly does.
Sheriff's Dept. alleges Dijon Kizzee picked up gun before deputies fired 19 shots
https://ktla.com/news/local-news/sheriffs-dept-alleges-dijon-kizzee-picked-up-gun-before-being-shot-19-times-by-deputies/Los Angeles County sheriffs officials now allege Dijon Kizzee picked up a pistol before deputies chasing him over a bicycle violation fired 19 shots, killing him.
The Sheriffs Department gave an update Thursday on its investigation into the Aug. 31 shooting, the first update on how it unfolded since homicide investigators interviewed the deputies involved in the case.
Previously, officials had said the 29-year-old Black man made a motion toward a gun that dropped from a jacket as he fell to the ground.
The deadly shooting has sparked a wave of protests, largely outside the sheriffs station in South L.A., at which demonstrators say theyve been met with harsh tactics from deputies. The tension boiled over last weekend when two deputies were wounded in an ambush shooting in Compton, and the Sheriffs Department later arrested a journalist reporting on a small protest outside the hospital where they were being treated.

Instagram's Most Fascinating Subculture? Women Hunters.
https://www.outsideonline.com/2416520/women-hunters-instagram-rihana-cary-amanda-caldwellIts a dry January, which means two things on this girls trip to central Arizona: were all skipping the margaritas tonight, and the river will be low enough for our Tacoma to cross in the morning.
Crowded into a booth at a Mexican restaurant in a small town near the edge of Tonto National Forest, swapping names and where-are-you-froms, we are a motley crew: two millennials wearing camouflage and eyelash extensions, an overalls-clad photographer who lives in an Airstream, and me, a San Francisco food writer soon to be out of her comfort zone.
Our server, Penny, flower pen poised over her notepad, is confused. I have to ask, she says, inspecting us through rhinestone-studded spectacles. What are you ladies doing here?
Rihana Cary, 33, and Amanda Caldwell, 32, friends who met on Instagram, look at each other. Theyre used to this question.

How Covid-19 made flying Business Class feel more like Economy
https://www.livemint.com/news/world/how-covid-19-made-flying-business-class-feel-more-like-economy-11599955409891.htmlForget the flute of chilled Moet & Chandon before takeoff, mid-flight gin and tonics and a roaming dessert trolley after dinner. Flying business class isnt what it used to be.
Efforts to minimize human interaction and reduce the risk of infection are taking the shine off the most expensive seats onboard commercial aircraft. Gone are the multi-course banquets and warm personal service, once the hallmarks of carriers like Singapore Airlines Ltd. and Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. These days, whats left of premium-grade travel is functional, hygienic and closer to cattle class -- only with more legroom.
The limitations are one more headache for an industry grappling with a near-total collapse in demand and follow years of luxury oneupmanship among carriers in a contest for the most profitable passengers.
Suddenly, its harder to tell airlines apart when youre up the pointy end. Thats making it tougher to win top-paying customers, and risks pushing some to the back of the plane.

Two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies are fighting for their lives after they were shot multiple times at point-blank range in an ambush, authorities said.
Crowds of protesters blocked the entrance to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where the wounded officers were in a critical condition, police said. Some protesters chanted "we hope they die," the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter. A witness told ABC7 that some had tried to break into the hospital's emergency room.
The shooting happened at around 7 p.m. Saturday at the Metro Blue Line station at Willowbrook Avenue and Compton Boulevard, not far from the Compton sheriff's station.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's department shared video of the incident in a post on Twitter that shows a person open fire through the passenger-side window of the patrol car in Compton.

Colorado school calls police on 12-year-old who showed toy gun in virtual class
https://www.kiro7.com/news/trending/colorado-school-calls-police-12-year-old-who-showed-toy-gun-virtual-class/AJGU24CDPBC4DH2E5QZ2BU2HZI/A Colorado Springs school sent police to the home of a 12-year-old because he was seen playing with a toy gun during an online class.
Danielle Elliott, whose son, Isaiah, pointed the toy gun at a computer screen and pulled the trigger during his virtual art class, said she received a call on Aug. 27 from the school saying that a police officer was on the way to her home.
I never thought: You cant play with a Nerf gun in your own home because somebody may perceive it as a threat and call the police on you, Elliott said.
The incident happened on the third day of distance learning at Grand Mountain School. Elliott said her sons art teacher emailed her, saying she had notified the vice principal that her son was distracted and playing with a gun. The teacher said she believed the gun was fake.
