Florida boy, 14, charged as an adult after cheerleader stabbed 114 times

https://www.tampabay.com/news/breaking-news/2021/05/28/florida-boy-14-charged-as-an-adult-after-cheerleader-stabbed-114-times/

Chilling new details have emerged about the fatal stabbing of a 13-year-old cheerleader who was found dead in a wooded area in Northeast Florida on Mother’s Day.

On Thursday, State Attorney for the 7th Circuit R.J. Larizza announced during a news conference that Tristyn Bailey was stabbed 114 times while fighting off her killer. He said at least 49 of the stab wounds were to her hands, arms and head and that they were “defensive in nature,” according to local media reports.

“We can’t say what happened at this pond but we know there was a struggle,” Larizza said at the news conference. “To say that it was horrific could arguably be made as an understatement.”

Charged in the case is 14-year-old Aiden Fucci, a schoolmate in St. Johns County. He has been in custody in a juvenile facility since his May 10 arrest on a charge of second-degree murder. Larizza announced Thursday that his charges would be upgraded to first-degree murder and that he would be charged as an adult. He faces a possible life sentence if convicted, according to The Associated Press.

Texas Senate has passed HB 957, exempting Texas-made suppressors from the NFA.

https://legiscan.com/TX/text/HB957/id/2226583

The bill does three things:

1) It repeals the state law which makes suppressors manufactured or owned outside the NFA illegal.

2) Establishes a class of suppressors which, if made in Texas with Texas-made parts, are legal outside the NFA as long as they remain in Texas. No $200 tax stamp, no background check, no year-long wait for approval, no paperwork of any kind. The suppressor must be marked "Made in Texas".

3) Sets a path to secure a declaratory judgment on the constitutionality of this law before anyone manufactures “Made in Texas” suppressors.

As the bill in the Senate was identical to the one passed by the House, it now goes to the governor's desk. It should be noted that even if the governor signs off on the bill, it will still have to go through the federal court system before becoming law.

Have U.S. Gun Buyback Programs Misfired?

https://www.nber.org/papers/w28763

Gun buyback programs (GBPs), which use public funds to purchase civilians' privately-owned firearms, aim to reduce gun violence. However, little is known about their effects on firearm-related crime or deaths. Using data from the National Incident Based Reporting System, we find no evidence that GBPs reduce gun crime.

Given our estimated null findings, with 95 percent confidence, we can rule out decreases in firearm-related crime of greater than 1.3 percent during the year following a buyback. Using data from the National Vital Statistics System, we also find no evidence that GBPs reduce suicides or homicides where a firearm was involved.

Fewer Americans prioritizing new gun laws compared to peak after Parkland shooting: poll

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/550661-fewer-americans-prioritizing-new-gun-laws-compared-to-peak-after

Fewer Americans support prioritizing new gun control laws compared to a peak in 2018 after the shooting in Parkland, Fla., according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll released Wednesday.

Fifty percent of Americans say passing new gun control legislation should be a priority, a drop from 57 percent in 2018, which represented a high-water mark for the issue after the fatal shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Meanwhile, 43 percent of Americans said protecting the right to own guns should be a bigger priority, a jump from 34 percent three years ago.

The survey comes as the nation reels from a string of mass shootings. After a lull in gun violence in 2020 during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, high-profile shootings in Atlanta, Indianapolis, Boulder, Colo., and elsewhere have thrust the issue of gun control back into the national spotlight.

Illinois judge rules FOID card 'unconstitutional'

https://khqa.com/newsletter-daily/illinois-judge-rules-foid-card-unconstitutional

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — An Illinois judge has ruled that Illinois' Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card law is unconstitutional.

The 2017 case, The People of Illinois vs. Vivian Claudine Brown, comes after Vivian Brown was accused of possessing a firearm without a FOID card.

Brown argued that she "was a law-abiding person charged with possessing an otherwise lawful firearm without a FOID card solely within the confines of her home and that requiring her to go through the FOID card process unconstitutionally infringed upon her fundamental right of self-defense in this 'most private of areas.'"

White County Judge T. Scott Webb agreed.

Man, a steal! Rare Superman comic sells for record $3.25M

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/man-steal-rare-superman-comic-224450462.html

NEW YORK (AP) — One of the few copies of the comic book that introduced Superman to the world has sold for a super-sized, record-setting price.

The issue of Action Comics #1 went for $3.25 million in a private sale, ComicConnect.com, an online auction and consignment company, announced Tuesday.

It narrowly bested the previous record for the comic, set in the auction of another copy in 2014 for slightly over $3.2 million.

The comic, published in 1938, “really is the beginning of the superhero genre," said ComicConnect.com COO Vincent Zurzolo, who brokered the sale.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signs law allowing permitless handgun carry, purchase

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2021/04/02/iowa-kim-reynolds-signs-law-allowing-no-permit-carry-purchase-handguns-conceal-carry-constitutional/6965689002/

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a law allowing people to buy and carry handguns in Iowa without a permit, fulfilling a longtime goal of gun rights advocates.

The law, which some advocates call "constitutional carry," will take effect July 1.

"Today I signed legislation that protects the 2nd Amendment rights of Iowa’s law-abiding citizens while still preventing the sale of firearms to criminals and other dangerous individuals," Reynolds, a Republican, said in a statement after signing the measure Friday afternoon.

Democrats and gun violence prevention groups say the law will roll back background checks on handgun sales between private citizens. That's because, under current law, Iowans must pass a background check to obtain a permit to carry or acquire a handgun before they can legally buy one in a private sale.

Thailand plans quarantine-free entry for vaccinated tourists

https://apnews.com/article/travel-coronavirus-pandemic-prayuth-chan-ocha-bangkok-thailand-c1e4086707bb36663a0e9d9e2a92c3f8

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand plans to allow vaccinated foreigners to visit the southern resort island of Phuket without quarantining on arrival in a step toward reviving the country’s big but battered tourism industry.

Starting in April, the country also is shortening the quarantine period for arrivals from abroad to 10 days from 14.

Thailand’s tourism industry dried up when scheduled passenger flights into the country were barred in April last year to curb the spread of the coronavirus. There has been a limited resumption of flights since then.

The plan for Phuket is set to begin on July 1, and if judged successful, may include other popular destinations such as Samui Island, Krabi, Pattaya and Chiang Mai in October, said Yuthasak Supasor, head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Officer Eric Talley Would Have Been 'Deeply Offended' if Used for Gun Control Push, Dad Says

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/officer-eric-talley-would-have-been-deeply-offended-if-used-for-gun-control-push-dad-says/ar-BB1f04Cc

The Boulder, Colorado, shooting has reignited the push for gun control, but the father of the police officer who was killed said his son was a gun owner and wouldn't have wanted his death to be used to restrict access to firearms.

A week after eight people were killed at three Atlanta spas, a gunman opened fire at a grocery store in Colorado, killing 10 people. The two shootings compelled lawmakers to call for a ban on certain firearms, a move that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris support.

Homer Talley, the father of Boulder Police officer Eric Talley, who was the first law enforcement officer to arrive on the scene, told TMZ his late son owned an AR-15 he used for target practice.

"My son would have been deeply offended to know his death would be used to promote gun control. Before he was an officer, he enjoyed shooting," Talley told TMZ.
