The Cleveland OH MLB team has changed their name to "Guardians." Cruz immediately asked -- in a Tweet -- "Why does MLB hate Indians?"
He was buried in scorn . . . I don't know how to post tweets, so, go to the cited article to see.
Meanwhile, I'm wondering why Cruz wants to be called "Ted" and not by his given name of "Rafael"? Is it because he knows Texas Republicans will not vote for someone named "Rafael"?
"Declining effectiveness of vaccines" -- the latest rightwing lie
I live in the rural South, surrounded by Tea Partiers, wingnuts, Trumpsters, MAGAts and assorted other nutcases.
Here's their latest line of bull manure:
-- A year ago, COVID was raging -- deaths skyrocketing; mask and gathering restrictions locking us down; no vaccine in sight.
-- Now, with almost 70% of the nation vaccinated and with the effectiveness of last year's restrictions, we just about have COVID under control.
-- But now new infections and deaths are rising AMONG THE UNVACCINATED.
So, how do my idiot neighbors respond? It's all because the vaccines "lose effectiveness over time." That's right, it's not the Delta variant, it's not the fact that deaths are rising among the unvaccinated, it's that they were right all along -- the vaccines are losing effectiveness.
I have tried to point out that (1) 99.5% of deaths now are among the unvaccinated; (2) deaths are on the rise in the unvaccinated areas of the country (and our state); and, (3) even if a vaccinated person falls ill with COVID, it's a mild case.
But do they listen? Of course not . . .
If Stupid were a crime, my neighbors would be doing 25 to life.
It's about statues of Confederate generals
Last weekend, the city of Charlottesville VA removed the statues of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.
All the activity was recorded on video by news media, professionals, and amateurs alike -- dismantling the statues; loading them onto flatbed trailers; and, driving them away for storage.
One individual made video of the Lee statue passing his home. He then interposed on the video a few seconds of the fiddle tune "Ashokan Farewell" -- the theme music from the Ken Burns PBS special on the Civil War.
I've been watching this video over and over and can't seem to get away from it . . . . on a quiet residential street of a Southern city, an old, faded statue of Lee, strapped onto a flatbed truck, no cheering crowds, no demonstrations, just an old piece of bronze from days long gone, headed for its final resting place. Seems to me there's a longer story in here somewhere.

Background: My rural VA county is blessed with more than our fair share of dingbats, nutcases, Trumpanzees, Proud Boys, Oaf Keepers, and other loons.
While checking out the Facebook page of one of these nutcases, I ran across this -- it seems someone saw an article that the military is training soldiers to fight in tunnels. The nutcases have decided this means the military is preparing to invade the tunnels where the Democrats are hiding children . . . or something like that.

Man arrested for attempting to ram Washington Monument
A man is in custody after driving his car into the barrier wall encircling the Washington Monument Saturday night.
The collision happened around 8 p.m. Saturday.
D.C. Police said the man’s SUV mounted the curb, drove through the Washington Monument grounds and came within 500 feet of the marble obelisk before crashing into the surrounding stone wall.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital in custody.
The FBI is investigating the crash as a possible act of terrorism.

Can the "ballot audit" in Arizona get any crazier? Bamboo ballots from Asia . . . .
Now we learn that the "ballot auditors" in Arizona are checking the ballots for traces of bamboo because they learned that 40,000 ballots were smuggled in from Asia.
This is NOT a joke. And, no, I have not been drinking, though I probably will after having read this.

I'm not certain if this is allowed on DU, but, here goes -- I'm posting only an intro, then, I'm posting a link to a LONG article with the details.
Virginia has off-year elections for Gov, Lt Gov, Atty General, and county offices (school board, supervisors, sheriff, etc.). Our primary elections are June 8, however, the Republicans -- fearing far-right gunnut State Senator Amanda Chase's popularity -- have chosen a "distributed convention" in which local Republican's will drive, walk, crawl, whatever to 40-some odd locations across the state to choose their candidates for Gov, Lt Gov, and Atty Gen. Democrats will hold a normal primary on June 8 (early voting started last week, 4/23).
Last night -- 4/27 -- Virginia's Republican gubernatorial candidates participated in a freak show . . . oooppsss -- I meant to say "debate" -- at a golf club in Northern VA. Lowell Kaine, moderator of the blog "BlueVirginia" did a masterful job of capturing the essence and many of the details of this event.

Republicans have lost all three top positions in Virginia for the past ten yeas -- Gov, Lt Gov, and AG -- they are poised to lose again. In 2019, they lost the General Assembly to Democrats, thereby turning VA blue. We VA Democrats are working our tails off to keep it that way.
Got my second vaccination today!!!
Got the Moderna vaccine. Friends of mine have had reactions to the second Moderna ranging from "Vaccination? What Vaccination?" to being laid low for a couple of days. I stocked up on Tylenol, Aleve, and Dr. Jack Daniel's elixir -- so, bring it on!!!
Vaccination was at 11:00 this morning, as of 9:00 PM, still feeling nothing but a slight sore arm.
Sweet Thing gets her second vaccination (Pfizer) April 24.
I'm gonna search Amazon for one of those "I've Been Vaccinated" T-shirts!!
There really are nice people in this country
After four years of That Man and his vicious tweets and verbal attacks; after four years of his supporters and their flags and caravans and their Jan 6 terrorist attack; after a decade of Turtleface McConnell, I had just about decided there are no more nice people left.
Sweet Thing and I are in our late 70's. I am blessed to be in good health and decent physical condition, however, Sweet Thing needs a bit of help when she gets up, sits down, moves around, answers questions, deals with other people and the like.
I had my first COVID vaccine a month ago. She was scheduled for her first today at a regional medical center that's hour-and-a-half away. We received email reminding us of the appointment and telling us DO NOT ARRIVE MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES EARLY.
Given the travel time, we left in plenty of time to get there -- and we arrived 55 minutes early. I reported to a nurse with a clipboard, fearing that she would send us off for 50 minutes to wait. She smiled, checked us off on the clipboard, confirmed my cell phone number and said, "Okay, wait in the car, I'll call you in a minute."
I went back to the car, in 3 minutes my cell phone rang -- it was the Clipboard Nurse who said, "We are ready for you!!"
EVERY ONE THERE WAS SMILING -- nurses, volunteers -- all smiling, all asking if they could help.
We checked in, they gave us a clipboard with a form to fill out, another nurse asked if she could help fill out the form, she took the completed form, smiled, asked us to wait just a minute. She then came and led us to the vaccination table -- I asked "Is it okay if I stay with her? She needs a little help walking and sometimes is confused."
To which the Smiling Nurse replied "You just come right ahead and I'll stay with the two of you just in case you need more help!!"
Sweet Thing got her shot, announced "That didn't hurt a bit."
We waited the 15 minutes and left to find lunch as it had been a long time since breakfast. We got to a mom-and-pop restaurant that's operating at about 50% capacity. As we headed for the door, a young man (a complete stranger) broke out of a group of teenagers, asked if he could help us to the door, opened the heavy front door, smiled, told us to have a nice day.
Folks in the restaurant were smiling and helpful.
Drove the 90 minutes back home, stopped to fill up with gas, a teenaged friend of my grandson saw us at the gas pumps, came over and pumped the gas for me!!!
You know, after his four years of meanness That Man has faded away and the nice people are still here !!!!!!!!!!
