Nevada officer slams student recording police, kneels on him

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A school police officer in Las Vegas was captured on cellphone video last week slamming a high school student to the ground and pinning him underneath his knee, prompting an investigation and renewed calls from Nevada activists who want to see police removed from schools and more resources for students.

The Clark County School District Police Department said the Feb. 9 encounter outside Durango High School in suburban Las Vegas unfolded while officers were investigating a report of a firearm near the campus, but school officials have not released further information, including whether a weapon was found.

District Police Chief Mike Blackeye said in a statement Wednesday that the officer was reassigned to other duties pending the outcome of the investigation into his actions, and Superintendent Jesus Jara said he has called for a “complete review” of the police department’s use of force policy.

The department has not released body camera or dashboard camera videos of the incident, nor has it released the name of the officer. But the local NAACP chapter, in a statement Wednesday calling for the officer's termination, identified him as Lt. Jason Elfberg.

A 200-page motion for summary judgment in Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit against Fox News released Thursday includes several deposition excerpts, as well as texts from top Fox News figures, including anchors Carlson, Hannity, and owner Rupert Murdoch, detailing the panic and acrimony permeating Fox News in the aftermath of Trump's loss to then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

Fox News was the first network to call Biden's win in Arizona on November 3, 2020, setting off fury and fear among Fox employees after several Trump allies eviscerated the network for its projection, according to the court documents. Carlson worried in text messages, cited in the motion for summary judgment, that the call would destroy Fox's "credibility," suggesting to a producer that Trump could "easily destroy us if we play it wrong."

In the days following the election, the network's coverage became increasingly focused on Dominion Voting Systems as Trump and others in his camp spread baseless allegations about voting machine fraud, according to court documents and prior reporting.

Louisiana police officer charged in shooting death of unarmed man

A Louisiana police officer was charged Thursday in connection with the shooting death of an unarmed man earlier this month, police said.

Shreveport Police Officer Alexander Tyler, 23, was arrested after a review of body camera footage and "other relevant evidence" by the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations, the department said in a statement.

The officer was charged with negligent homicide and was booked into the Caddo Correctional Center, LSP said.

Tyler is accused of fatally shooting 43-year-old Alonzo Bagley, who is Black, on Feb. 3 after he and other officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex where Bagley lived, according to police.

Suspect in custody after 2 Jewish men reportedly shot following religious services in LA: Police

Police are investigating after two Jewish men were reportedly shot after leaving religious services in Los Angeles within 24 hours.

The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement Thursday night that it believes the suspect, who is now in custody, "is responsible for the two shootings in West Los Angeles" on Wednesday and Thursday.

"The facts of the case led to this crime being investigated as a hate crime," the LAPD said, also adding: "In an abundance of caution, there will continue to be an increased police presence and patrols around Jewish places of worship and surrounding neighborhoods through the weekend."

According to law enforcement sources, the suspect allegedly has a history of animus toward the Jewish community.
