Bulletproof glass, guards: Election offices tighten security

When voters in Jefferson County, Colorado, cast their ballots in the Nov. 8 midterm election, they will see security guards stationed outside the busiest polling centers.

At an election office in Flagstaff, Arizona, voters will encounter bulletproof glass and need to press a buzzer to enter. In Tallahassee, Florida, election workers will count ballots in a building that has been newly toughened with walls made of the super-strong fiber Kevlar.

Spurred by a deluge of threats and intimidating behavior by conspiracy theorists and others upset over former President Donald Trump's 2020 election defeat, some election officials across the United States are fortifying their operations as they ramp up for another divisive election.

A Reuters survey of 30 election offices found that 15 have enhanced security in various ways, from installing panic buttons to hiring extra security guards to holding active-shooter and de-escalation training.

Trump rallies drift to fringe ahead of potential 2024 bid

WARREN, Mich. (AP) — Paige Cole is one of the “Anons.” The mother of three from Eastpointe, Michigan, says Joe Biden is a sham president and believes Donald Trump will soon be reinstated to the White House to finish the remainder of Biden’s term.

“His whole inauguration was fake. He didn’t have real military people. He had, like, fake badges, fake people. And Trump is actually our president,” she said while waiting in line for his latest rally on Saturday at Macomb Community College. Wearing a pink “Trump 2024” hat and draped in a large “TRUMP WON” flag, Cole — a former Democrat who says she voted twice for Barack Obama — began to cry as she described the significance of Trump's return and the 1,000 years of peace she believes will be ushered in with it.

“It’s gonna change everything,” she says, "like we have never in humanity seen before.”

Trump’s rallies have always attracted a broad swath of supporters, from first timers taking advantage of their chance to see a president in person, to devotees who camp out for days and follow him around the country like rock band groupies. But after spending much of the last two years obsessively peddling false claims of a stolen election, Trump is increasingly attracting those who have broken with reality, including adherents of the baseless QAnon conspiracy, which began in the dark corners of the internet and is premised on the belief that the country is run by a ring of child sex traffickers, satanic pedophiles and cannibals that only Trump can defeat.

Reports: Migrant flights' mysterious recruiter identified

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The mysterious woman who allegedly lured dozens of migrants on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ flights to Martha's Vineyard from San Antonio has been identified by several media outlets as Perla H. Huerta, a former combat medic and U.S. Army counterintelligence agent living in Tampa.

The New York Times reported late Sunday that a Venezuelan migrant who was working with Huerta to recruit migrants confirmed her identity, and a migrant in San Antonio whom Huerta had unsuccessfully sought to sign up identified a photo of her.

CNN reported that a friend of Huerta confirmed her identity in a photo provided by a migrant. Pictures have been circulating of the woman — until now known simply as “Perla” — after she allegedly recruited many of the 48 Venezuelan migrants outside a city-operated shelter in downtown San Antonio and moved them at a La Quinta Inn, before they were flown to the upscale Massachusetts island at the expense of Florida taxpayers.

The San Antonio Express-News, citing unnamed sources, reported Monday that the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, which includes San Antonio, considers Huerta, 43, a “person of interest” in its criminal investigation into the incident.

I'm curious how many DUers in AZ voted the same, will vote the same, or similar, to how I voted

Straight Democratic Party for each and every race. I didn't vote for Kelly, I voted against Masters. I didn't vote for Raul, I voted against the sacrificial lamb. I voted FOR Hobbs and Hoffman (screw that Batcrap Crazy Kari Lake and the useless tool Tom Horne).

None for running unopposed (their own vote can win them the election).

No for retaining all judges (just because it feels good to vote no for someone in a ballot).

No for most props sponsored by the legislature (if they want it, we must be getting the shaft: 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 309).

Yes on good ballot props (209, 211, 308).

No on all funding, even if I agree with the reason for the funds, using regressive, attack the poor consumption taxes (sales tax): 310

Pima County Recorder already sent me the email that it was received, verified, and counted.

I remember when I decided to go back, I was attacked by two people.

One who said that I abandoned my constituents by suspending my campaign, thus exposing myself as one who had no interest in running to support my district.

A second told me that I was a complete fraud for setting up a gofundme to get me back to my wife and that they would be reporting me to the FBI and exposing me as the fraud I was.

These two people really hurt me and made me question people more and more. At my darkest, here were two people kicking me down at my lowest.

I had already had a mental and nervous breakdown due to all of this. I was isolated where I lived, alienated where I worked, beaten down by a tactless, indifferent, and vindictive Asst. Principal (who I later exposed as a convicted felon) and Principal (who never cared one minute about understanding why I was depressed or ever spent a moment to give a sympathetic ear). If it weren't for my district superintendent that was going through the same problems with USCIS and the NVC, it would have been 1000 times harder.

For everyone else on DU, all I say is something very short, understated, underwhelming, but from the heat: Thank you everyone.
