Bolsonaro's 'banana republic' military parade condemned by critics

Source: The Guardian

Critics have denounced Jair Bolsonaro’s “banana republic-style” decision to send combat vehicles on to the streets of Brazil’s capital for a rare military parade in what was widely seen as a beleaguered president’s ham-fisted attempt to project strength.

Bolsonaro, whose ratings have plunged as a result of his chaotic response to the Covid pandemic, looked on from the marble ramp outside the presidential palace as a motorcade of armoured vehicles trundled past on Tuesday morning.

“Ridiculous. Grotesque. Pitiful. Needless. Banana Republic stuff,” tweeted the Brasília-based journalist Brunno Melo as the procession advanced under a perfect blue sky.

The hastily arranged parade – which experts said had no precedent in the years since the restoration of democracy in 1985 – was reportedly ordered by Bolsonaro last Friday and came on the same day members of congress were scheduled to vote on highly controversial Bolsonaro-backed plans to change Brazil’s voting system.

Tanks in the streets of Brazil: As lawmakers vote on paper ballots, Bolsonaro holds military parade

Following a request from President Jair Bolsonaro, Defense Minister Walter Braga Netto has ordered the Navy to prepare a parade of armored vehicles, tanks, and weaponry in front of the presidential palace tomorrow.

The purpose of the parade is merely for the Navy to present Mr. Bolsonaro with an invitation to attend Operation Formosa, a week-long traditional military training session which will take place 60 kilometers from the capital Brasília and begin on August 16. It is customary for military commanders to hand the invitation in person — but not to be escorted by combat vehicles.

The display of strength comes on the same day as the lower house is scheduled to vote down a bill, sponsored by the president, to introduce paper ballots as a supplement to Brazil’s fully electronic voting system.

The Congress building — as well as the Supreme Court — sits just across the street from the presidential palace, which led many to interpret this unconventional parade as an overt act of intimidation against the other branches of power. For weeks, the president has threatened not to allow elections to take place next year without “auditable ballots”, despite no credible fraud allegations having surfaced since Brazil adopted the electronic system, nearly 25 years ago.

Defense Minister Braga Netto — who called for the military parade — has indulged Mr. Bolsonaro’s push for paper ballots, reportedly going as far as threatening Congress with a military coup should lawmakers strike it down.

Besides the probable defeat of the paper ballot bill in the House, high courts have placed Mr. Bolsonaro under investigation for his remarks trying to discredit the electoral system. The probe could ultimately cost the president his eligibility in the 2022 election — and Mr. Bolsonaro seems willing to test how far the courts are willing to go in holding him to account.

US Eyes Brazil as Second Global Partner in Lat Am, Reports Say

In its global efforts to prevent the expansion of China into regions traditionally dominated by the U.S. corporate transnationals, the U.S. government is offering Brazil a dubious military deal in exchange for dropping China's 5G Huawei network from its giant market.

During his first visit to Brazil, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan discussed with Brazilian defence minister Walter Braga Neto the possibility of Brazil’s joining NATO´s global partnership initiative , according to a recent report by the Brazilian Folha de Sao Paulo.

Sullivan raised the issue of granting Brazil a NATO global partner status while discussing defence and security with Braga Neto on Thursday. The offer to become a NATO global partner involves the condition that Brazil drops Chinese 5G technologies for its wireless communications networks, supplied by Huawei. The U.S. government views Huawei as unreliable, which hinders cooperation on security communications, Folha de Sao Paulo said.

The Brazilian newspaper also informed that Sullivan gave the details of this proposal to Brazil’s Minister of Communications, Fabio Faria, assuring him that it is possible to promote instead the U.S. Open RAN technology as a tool to develop wireless capabilities, a technology similar to Huawei’s 5G in the market of the South American giant.

CIA Director Makes Secret Visit To Crumbling Bolsonaro Government

Background: Shortly after taking office, Jair Bolsonaro became the first Brazilian leader to visit CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. He was accompanied by his Justice Minister Sergio Moro who had jailed main opponent Lula da Silva before the 2018 election, on now annulled charges. As a result, US-trained Moro now faces Supreme Court investigation for Judicial bias. Prosecutors from the now disgraced joint US-Brazil anti-corruption operation Lava Jato called Lula’s prosecution “a gift from the CIA”. The White House recently admitted that the CIA was involved in its “fight against corruption” in Latin America, which effectively brought Bolsonaro to power.

"William J. Burns, director of US intelligence agency the CIA, is currently visiting Brazilian capital Brasília, where he will be meeting government officials such as Government Secretary, General Luiz Eduardo Ramos, and the powerful head of Institutional Security, General Augusto Heleno.

On the 29th June, Burns was in Colombia, according to the Colombian ambassador in Washington, Francisco Santos, Burns’ arrival is the result of three previous meetings with the CIA to clarify “what is happening in the country”.

This week, United States President Joe Biden, announced on June 28 (1 day before the arrival of the CIA director in Colombia) his support for negotiations promoted in conjunction with the international community, regarding the forthcoming elections in Colombia, where leftist Gustavo Petro currently leads opinion polls."
