8. People even passed laws against 'horseless carriages' to stop them

PA has 2 dumb laws listed at dumblaws.com that I think might technically still be on the books.

Any motorist driving along a country road at night must stop every mile and send up a rocket signal, wait 10 minutes for the road to be cleared of livestock, and continue.

&

Any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the countryside, and let the horses pass.


To be fair though, there were reasons for some of these dumb laws at the time. Horses and other livestock were terrified of cars. Horses especially were prone to becoming uncontrollable and fleeing in panic, which tended to injure anyone riding the horse, or anyone in a carriage the horse was pulling along.
