In reply to the discussion: Major Dem donor hints she'll withhold funds after 'vigilante' Democrats forced Al Franken to resign [View all]CincyDem
(6,355 posts)85. Yeah - that NRA thing bothers me too...
...but I've come to the conclusion that there is no single issue within the realm of reason that would prevent me from supporting a democrat over a republican. Sure - if we have a dem running for office on the platform "child porn for all", I'm not support them but really, do you think that's ever going to be the case.
My rationale may be faulty but even in a case like Gillibrand and the NRA...I can support her because I have confidence that, as a democrat, she has the ability to hear the opinions of others and when appropriate change her mind. I'd vote for her even with that NRA 100% because I think there's a change she reconsiders that position over time.
What percent ??? I don't know but higher than any republican. I used to think republicans could only reexamine their priorities in light of personal experience (a la Portman and his gay rights stance when his son came out) but now, in a post Scalese, I don't think that's a given.
I believe republican politicians are who they are going to be while democratic politicians have at least some chance greater than zero of becoming more than they are today.
Maybe I'm being closed minded about close-mindedness but I don't see republicans honestly evolving their positions while I think democrats can (and do).

No, Franken was a huge loss - it was the railroad job that helped the Repubs.

Good. Yes, Gillibrand spearheaded it. Because Franken was in the way of her Presidential plans.
