Lest we forget that mainstream views on homosexuality changed drastically in the mid 2000's or so.
-Even on DU, during the 2004 election, it was normal to refer to milquetoast Dems as 'Pink Tu Tu Democrats' and there were all types of gifs/memes showing them dancing around. That wouldn't be acceptable now.
-Many of liberals back then used to openly mock Ann Coulter in a transphobic fashion.
It's revisionist history to take our values of 2018 and project them backward to the early and mid 2000's.
Also keep in mind such homophobic comments were/are common amongst the younger generations. What is going to happen when they start running for office and all of those 'that's gay' (typical Millennial phrase) type comments and worse come up?
In general I'm not a fan of going back far in the past and plucking comments or life phases here and there (even when it comes to Bernie, the sex stuff he wrote imo was him trying to be some enlightened hippy) because people change... that is the mark of anyone with a brain.. they go through phases and change as new info and experience comes in. That should be a quality we want. (note that Elizabeth Warren was a die hard Reagan Repub before becoming a darling of the left, if she's allowed to evolve why not Joy?)
Ultimately the LGBTQ community will have to decide whether it forgives Joy or not, it's not up to us straights, but be certain about one thing - the alt-left (many of whom sympathize with Trump and the deplorables) are cynically using this to divide Dems and bring down a powerful WoC voice.
